Thrilled to say that "Revolutionary Taiwan: Making nationhood in a changing world order" by

A home-owner telling the 🇦🇺 prime minister and the media to move off his just re-seeded lawn is hilarious and, especially on this day and in this week, that they all dutifully did so is also deeply democratic.
Musician Roger Waters: "They're not encircling Taiwan, Taiwan is part of China, and that's been absolutely accepted by the whole of the international community since 1948, and if you don't know that, you're not reading enough. Go and read about it."
This is where we are.

"It would be like the Chinese saying to us, look, we think Tasmania..."
No, it wouldn't be. Former Australian prime minister Paul Keating demonstrating his historical and strategic illiteracy on Taiwan. Kudos to
@FergusonNews
for challenging him.
Notable that this Netflix series about Taiwanese politics ignores 🇨🇳 completely, and is an excoriating (and recognisable in 🇦🇺) critique of gender politics in Taiwan's political and public life.
Also, the Mandarin/Taiwanese code-switching in the middle of conversations.
Watching 🇨🇳 mishandling COVID19 disappearing down the memory hole is quite something. Arresting doctors, ignoring warnings, suppressing information during the provincial party congress. Weeks of inaction. All vanishing and replaced with 🇨🇳 decisiveness and success.
Very interesting piece on the WHO learnings from China's response. Key takeaways for me:
1. Isolation incredibly successful.
2. Little asymptomatic transmission.
3. Unsure why kids rarely affected.
4. True mortality rate perhaps 1-2%.

🚨China's military has announced 2 days of drills surrounding Taiwan. Here's a very hasty overlay showing where the PLA says they'll be (light red boxes), compared to Taiwan's air defense identification zone (black lines).
"East Asia's proliferation of 7-11s has been disgracefully ignored in the West. It shows how provincial, ignorant and narrow-minded the West has become. The biggest single reason for the success of 7-11s is Confucianism. But this is never mentioned."
Commentary by me, because someone has to, in response to an unedifying debate in 🇦🇺 on war and Taiwan. How Taiwan is not just a proxy for US power, how it is Beijing's war against the Taiwanese and how war would cost 🇦🇺 directly and dearly.
Favourite example of code switching between Taiyu and Mandarin in Edward Yang's sublime 2000 masterpiece Yi Yi A One and A Two. Taiwanese for the intimate, private and personal, Mandarin for the formal and public, and to conceal the private.
Huge win for

An absolutely heartbreaking article that argues that the fate of 24m people and the democracy for which they fought for 100 years is of no concern to Australia. And calls it "progressive".

Disturbing rhetoric on PRC state media describing "Taiwan independence forces" i.e. all of the Taiwanese people, as the "tumours" of an unhealthy Chinese nation who must be excised.
Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen
@iingwen
statement Honduras ending diplomatic relations.
Forthright as always. Notable use of the increasingly common term "理念相近國家 like-minded countries" as a definition of Taiwan's international relations.
Pro-tip for "China" analysts doing "Taiwan":
Taiwanese people do not "increasingly identify as Taiwanese rather than Chinese".
Taiwan has had self-determination movements since the 1920s and any pathway to consenting unification was closed in the 2-28 Uprising in 1947.
Hou Hsiao-hsien's 1989 monumental masterpiece City of Sadness 悲情城市 about 2-28 and Taiwan's transition from Japanese colonial rule to the ROC restored for re-release in February.
Image quality looks transformative. Tony Leung as heartbreaking as ever.
Paul Keating derides Taiwan's presidential elections as "municipal elections", aligned with Beijing's talking points, in his US-fixated discussion at
@latrobe
, betraying the deep contempt for Taiwan that lurks in Australian political and public institutional life.
I commend 7-11 in Taiwan for the banking, the photocopying, the train tickets, the tea eggs and spicy hotdogs, the SIM cards and the opening hours, etc. BUT, I'll damned if I fall victim to the insistence of the retail industry to brand 7-11 a convenience store.
"Taiwan, a territory which became a so-called 'democracy' as late as 1996."
Fmr PM Paul Keating unable to separate his opposition to AUKUS from his genuine disdain for the Taiwanese people.
Strong ad running across multiple platforms closing out the Xi Jinping 2022 campaign for the upcoming elections in China. Hard to see him losing at this point, despite Xi team's many missteps in the run-up to the vote, with such a weak opposition campaign.
"Any conflict over Taiwan will be one that Xi and the CCP have chosen."
Some comments from me about Taiwan, policy analysis and the 20th National Party Congress.
PRC state media outlet Global Times threatening Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen, with death.
The many calls for "nuance" in Australia's China debate are really just calls to explain away statements like this.
Voice:Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen, who pledged deeper ties with the US at a dinner for a visiting senior State Department official,is clearly playing with fire. If any act of her provacation violates the Anti-Secession Law of China, a war will be set off and Tsai will be wiped out
Why does the 🇦🇺 media describe Taiwan in marginalising and infantilising ways: "geopolitical absurdity", "rebellious province", "boisterous democracy"?
Because journalists have normalised Taiwan's exclusion from the international system reencode it with writerly metaphors.
"What about any support for the Taiwanese people who say they don't want that?"
"It will get resolved socially and politically over time. That's what will happen there."
Total misunderstanding of the contemporary and historical relationship between Taiwan and China.
"Born in Japan to Taiwanese and American parents, Hsiao’s own life reflects the desire felt by many in Taiwan to forge a distinct Taiwanese identity."

What is dangerous is an analysis that only maintains its internal logic by eliminating the Taiwanese from its equation of regional security.

@NetflixANZ
. An unflinching examination of gender politics in Taiwan balanced by a heartfelt belief in democracy as a transformative project.
Why don't we make tv like this in Australia?
@johnmenadue
This is embarrassingly wrong and says all too much about how much P&I actually knows about the region. Taiwan was only granted provincial status in 1885 by the Qing empire after the failed French Keelung Campaign of 1884 and was ceded to Japan as a colonial territory in 1895.
"人選之 —造浪者Wave Makers" New Netflix comedy-drama about a fictional Taiwan election campaign. A bit Armando Iannucci, if without his jet-black sensibility.
Useful viewing for 🇦🇺 commentators on Taiwan. Would be gone, of course, along with its producers, after "reunification".

Disappointing that he cannot conceptualise 🇨🇳's threat against the Taiwanese as a critical security issue for 🇦🇺, which makes his call here for "neutrality" on 🇺🇸-🇨🇳 relations not really neutral.
It's not a "dispute over Taiwan". It's China going to war against the Taiwanese, and what that means for Australia.

on ABC 730, in which Nancy Pelosi responds to Paul Keating's comment about the Taiwanese that "they’re sitting on Chinese real estate."
"Hear from our guest speaker Carl Zha about the colonial and modern history of Taiwan..."
Why would an anti-imperialist organisation ask someone who isn't from Taiwan to offer this perspective?
32 PLA aircraft and 9 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m.(UTC+8) today. R.O.C. Armed Forces have monitored the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond these activities.
"Is Jacinda Ardern really the future of liberal democracy?"
Sure, but if 🇦🇺's media wasn't so suffocatingly Anglocentric, it would be asking what actually is a real question, "Is Tsai Ing-wen really the future of liberal democracy?"
Beijing showing how its "reunification" "strategy" is not a roadmap but just a tautological metaphor for CCP power and legitimacy.
It is ideologically trapped into escalating tactical threats against Taiwan.
"There is no scenario under which Taiwan voluntarily accedes to China’s dominion. Only force can make it happen."
