this is a scene in the opening for season 2 so the Guild arc. first we see 22 dazai and chuuya passing by each other like they’re strangers, like they have nothing to share. then it transitions to shin soukoku first (which i’ll also get into later) and THEN 22 chuuya and 18 dazai.

from the way it transitions from adult skk to 22 chuuya and pm dazai it seem like dazai “passing by” chuuya kinda reverts him back to the way chuuya remembers him, it feels like we’re seeing dazai THROUGH chuuya’s eyes and memory.

which is what brought soukoku back together at 22. now brace yourselves cuz this is gonna hurt. second possibility would be: soukoku had its peak when they both were in the pm, whatever they have now is a different bond, just as strong but still not the same infamous double black.

what im seeing there, with chuuya being 22 and dazai still being 18 in that frame, is that they’re depicted at the ages when they’d still be willing and able to have that very same bond they had before. chuuya hasnt moved on despite his best efforts.
