I studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France for a semester in 2010. I instantly loved it -- walkable, charming, lots to see and do, local & long distance mass transit (I went to Paris twice on a student budget!). 1/?
My politics are deeply influenced by traveling the world and seeing how less wealthy countries manage to have longer lifespans, better transit, more affordable housing, and less gun violence than we do

Washington DC needs to get its act together. Open up parking, make it easier to get in and out quickly. It doesn’t need to be backed up all the time. Parking needs to become so much easier. You should be able to drive in and find a parking place to view the capital pretty easily.

I hear this all the time when new housing is proposed in my area… “but is it affordable?” I genuinely don’t believe residents who have been here a long time understand how expensive housing is, including their own.
Too many people, sometimes but not always in good faith, have basically taken the position that new housing should be less expensive than old housing, and if it isn't then it shouldn't be built. Great strategy for turning $800k homes into million dollar homes, but not much else.

DC is such a good example of this. So many Democrats opposed to saving lives so drivers can have free rein over our streets. To what end? Who knows.
Democrats and Republicans have a shared interest in dangerous streets. Road diets, roundabouts, bike lanes...whatever would calm drivers to save lives gets the "It's a war on cars!!!1" treatment.

The street in front of Takoma Bev Co in Takoma Park has been closed for a streatery for almost three years. Now a $60,000 study will look at whether to close the other side of the street to create a full pedestrian plaza on Laurel Ave.

It’s your professional duty to tell LADOT that a useful structure is impossible under those standards. You don’t accept money for something you know isn’t possible.
This first gen Sombrita was designed to get to work fast within the current policy landscape. To avoid permit and multi-agency coordination, it had to meet these City standards: be less than 24” wide, maintain 4ft clearance, be entirely on the pole, be durable, and be removable.
