Press Note by All India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) Demand for CUET-PG Exams in Vernacular Languages to Ensure Inclusive Education The National Testing Agency (NTA) must take immediate steps to conduct the Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate (CUET-PG) in vernacular languages, rather than limiting it to the current bilingual format of English and Hindi. This demand is crucial to ensuring equitable access to higher education, particularly for students from rural areas and non-Hindi-speaking states. A significant section of students, especially from marginalized and rural backgrounds, receive their education in regional languages. The current language policy in CUET-PG creates an uneven playing field, making it difficult for these students to compete on equal terms. Conducting the examination in all major vernacular languages, as recognized under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, will promote linguistic diversity and align with the inclusive principles. The exclusion of regional languages from CUET-PG contradicts the government’s vision of accessible and equitable education. To uphold the spirit of social justice and ensure that language is not a barrier to higher education, we urge the NTA to introduce vernacular language options in CUET-PG from the upcoming examination cycle. We call upon the state government, political parities and civil society organisations to support this demand and take necessary steps to create an education system that is truly inclusive and representative of India’s linguistic diversity.
