I spent a summer in Hinton’s lab at UofT during grad school and he had a big impact on me. Nobody carried deep learning as far as Hinton and his students and they did so without fanfare for many years. On the surface an intriguing choice for a physics award, but he embodies the tireless search for truth appropriate for a Nobel winner. I remember this silly mug he had on his desk: it said something like “Learn, Dream, Achieve” on it, but he also sharpied in “Retire”. Time to update the mug again Geoff!

I really like this paragraph by Nicholas Carlini on doing important things that you enjoy. There’s a lot of important work and many things to enjoy, but doing things at that intersection is a force multiplier
