I never talk publicly about things like this, let alone tweet about them, but today at a bar in D.C. a bouncer asked me (I was alone) where “I’m from” and tried speaking in several Asian languages to me, even when I tried to ignore him. He would not leave me alone.
Confused and honestly very angry about this Instagram post from an official
@UCBerkeley
Instagram account.
When is xenophobia ever a “normal reaction”?
Him: “Are you Chinese?” Me: “I’m from Taiwan.” Him: “Ah, a few years longer you know…”
Just stating for the record that in no situation is saying that to someone okay!
✨ Very excited to share what’s next for me: Today is my first day at the

@nytopinion
. I can’t wait to get started.
“They can try to scream at him. They can try to run him out of the room, but it’s not going to work,” said Barbara Boxer, who encouraged Schiff to run for his House seat 20 years ago.
“The moment has really found him, and he is ready.”
Went to renew my Taiwanese passport, got denied because they couldn’t see my ears in my photo.
Ran across the street to UPS to take new photos. They told me to put these on — a first for everything I guess
Today I learned:
- Brad Pitt shared a two-bedroom apartment with eight others when he first moved to Los Angeles
- Quentin Tarantino briefly lived in his car when he was writing his first feature-length film, "Reservoir Dogs"
Maybe I'm late to this, but Taiwanese president

Some news: After 2.5 wonderful years, today is my last day at the

Growing up in Arcadia, my childhood dream was to work at The Times. I’m so glad I got the chance to, especially from D.C., the city I now call home.
📝 Some personal news: In March, I’ll be joining
@latimes

Please give a warm welcome to Adrienne Shih (
@adrienneshih

Seems like they've since deleted the post. But deleting ≠ an apology. In fact, it's just sweeping it under the rug and not owning up to something deeply problematic and hurtful.
Also, screenshots kind of live forever? Just a terrible look all around
California Rep.
@tedlieu
was still taking refuge in a Capitol Hill office when he fired off a text message to every Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee: We “should start drafting articles of impeachment now, regardless of what leadership says."
Some belated news: I’m so grateful that I’ll be staying at
@nytopinion
full time, based in DC. And a special thanks to
@norabarak
,
@ByAlexMarch
and
@rubinafillion
and all of my colleagues in Opinion for all their support the past few months!
📝 Some personal news: As I wrap up my

I haven’t seen my parents, who live in Taiwan, in over a year and a half.
Today, the got the first dose of their vaccines! Don’t mind as I get a little bit emotional
Today in Trump vs. California:
➡️Trump says LA + SF are ‘destroying themselves’ with homelessness
➡️Trump plans to revoke the state's environmental power after getting spurned over auto deal

I've always loved Berkeley's DeCal (student-run) classes ever since my undergrad days. Now, they're offering one on adulting, which is probably something I could've benefited from 😬
“Photographs, by definition, capture a moment in time. But the surviving people in these photographs, especially the children, must somehow go on. We are not symbols. We are human.”
"Meena’s ethics issues sit in a gray area, more problems of appearance than legality...But there are growing concerns that (she), in a smaller way, is leveraging her aunt’s position."
An 11 hour flight on a mostly-empty plane plus one long sleep later…Taipei, I’ll see you soon 🇹🇼
(Then it’s a two week hotel quarantine before I’m reunited with my parents and family!)
We apologize for our recent post on managing anxiety around Coronavirus. We regret any misunderstanding it may have caused and have updated the language in our materials.

I almost forgot that today is my two year anniversary

Bernie Sanders, the oldest candidate in the Democratic field, owes his success to the youngest voters in the party.

dig into why:
Since 2000, L.A. police have killed almost 900 people. Nearly 80% were black or Latino. More than 98% were shot to death.
In nearly all cases, the use of force was deemed legally justified by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office
I set out to read 52 books this year and came out the other end with 75. A few of my favorites:
• "There, There" by Tommy Orange
• "Severance" by Ling Ma
• "The Incendiaries" by R.O. Kwon (

)
• "Betraying Big Brother" by Leta Hong Fincher (

: Over a two-year period, from 2003 to 2005, Elizabeth Warren doled out personal finance advice to a live studio audience on "Dr. Phil."
Reminded that around this time seven years ago, I started my first journalism internship at the (now defunct) China Post in Taipei. Was a high school senior — crazy how time flies

But we need your help: Due to COVID, it's been difficult to find a volunteer to bring her to the U.S. from her foster family in South Korea.
We looked at the top books that were checked out from every library branch around L.A. County—love this project, complete with community stories centered around a few of the branches.
Hotel quarantine day
#3
:
- Today’s food was very good (SHRIMP DUMPLINGS!)
- I got a surprise LINE message from my hotel telling me they left an afternoon dessert at my door 🥺 It was a pineapple bun with butter (菠蘿油)
- The city gov’t delivered an entire bag of snacks & masks
Some very nice healthcare workers who were the first two human beings I’ve interacted with in 12 days (in this Taipei city bus that’s been converted into a mobile COVID testing site)
I’ve been leaving Taipei almost every year since I left for college in the US in 2014 but it never gets easier.
Grateful that I got to see my parents, family and friends (old and new!) after not being home for two years.
Hopefully I’ll be back soon 🇹🇼
I can’t even begin to describe how happy and relieved I am that my parents are getting their second vaccine doses in Taiwan today (mom today, dad tomorrow).
It’s a huge weight lifted from my shoulders, worrying about them from so far away
I am so proud of
@brenna__smith

The amount of vitriol from trolls on this site in response to her story is beyond shameful. The fact that it's targeted at a debut journalist who is doing fantastic work is sickening.
My *first* story with USA Today: Defendants in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot continue to crowdfund their legal fees online using popular payment processors despite a growing crackdown from tech companies.

I’ve been thinking about the right things to say, but my mind just goes blank.
This happened one town over from where I grew up — my family and I were always going to Monterey Park. It was a safe haven for my immigrant family from Taiwan. My heart is breaking for the community.
