Today is also my last day at the paper after nearly 13 years, and this will be my last column. I'm grateful that it happened to be one about saying goodbye.
tried to pay lunch bill w/a Chinese attorney. Did the fake going to the bathroom trick, & she was on the phone so thought I had it, but no. While still on the call, with 1 hand and w/out speaking, she forces the waiter to take her card. Humbled. still have so much to learn
Asians: hey our food is similar I wonder why wow culture is fascinating
Koreans: actually this is a special, unique, only in Korea dish, marinated in Korean sauce for 24 Korean hours using a special Korean technique known only to genetically pure Koreans
I wrote about LA Councilmembers physically attacking protesters, telling them “f*ck” you, calling them terrorists, and how this behavior by elected officials should be way more troubling to you than combative, rude protest tactics.
Disgusting, indefensible racism from Nury Martinez, Kevin De Leon and Gil Cedillo. Not just racist words, but racist sentiments, towards not just Blacks but Latinos too.
Going to learn from this. Next time, when the bill comes, I’ll be in the kitchen, having prepared the entire meal single-handedly w/ingredients from my personal farm, packing to go boxes for each member of their extended family. They’ll never see it coming
Just learned that this bend on the 10 Freeway, former bane of my west side commute, was created when white homeowners in cheviot hills pushed freeway expansion south where it destroyed dozens of homes in historically black Sugar Hill, now West Adams/the heights. Thx cheviot hills

@kogibbq
please come park near the Sheraton at universal city walk. there is an
@aaja
convention this week with thousands of Asians and very little Asian food around. Please. I had to eat at a yard house last night
Sorry this was a hot take. The truth is, some Asians’ pets are also named either tofu or boba or in some rare cases, some other Asian food item. But those are the facts

I wrote a profile of Danny Park, who keeps a picture of Latasha Harlins by his desk in the office of his family store in Skid Row as a reminder of the fraught history between Korean shopkeepers and their Black clientele in Los Angeles.
😱TOO stunned to see this in
@guardian
@ObserverUK
Lunar New Year recipes. You most definitely DO NOT pair a LNY dish w joss paper 金銀衣紙 which=hell money you burn for the dead. You DO NOT talk abt death in the New Year! DM me next time if you are unsure
The L.A. Times has the largest representation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders of any major U.S. newsroom. We’re forming

Instead of posting my wordle scores and indirectly bragging about my intelligence, i hope it’s ok if I just skip straight to posting my SAT score. perfect 800 verbal section y’all respect my vocabulary
I wrote about
@99RanchMarket
coming to Westwood, and how it signals a cultural shift for westside Los Angeles, which has long had a reputation for being a Chinese food desert. Features observations from the esteemed
@chandavkl
As is tradition I have prepared some colorful insults of the regional foods of the Dodgers postseason opponents. Please do not respond with substantive arguments as I will be forced to respond with utter nonsense.
I'm walking out with hundreds of my colleagues today because I'm scared for the future of the LA Times. We face cuts that would forever change the character of this newspaper, and we need you to know what's happening.
After being open about my mental health I figured I would be second-guessing people's reactions towards me for the rest of my life. it's so meaningful, gratifying to see Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka and others, non celebrities too, choose their health and explain their choices
@Nickfromlb
There’s also asking the restaurant to designate your credit card for the bill when making the reservation, weeks before the dinner even happens.
I wrote about Miguel Hernandez, the Oaxacan-born cook, marathon and bonsai artist who has cared for historic collection at Yamaguchi Nursery on Sawtelle since his teacher George Yamaguchi died in 2005.
For me, visiting Taiwan has always meant hanging out in 7-11's. my uncle runs a few in Taichung and it's our first stop after the airport. I wrote about how 7-11's evolved from texas ice houses to institutions central to Taiwanese life
Condolences to all the Taiwanese kids who went home for the holidays and found brown rice/no rice/cauliflower/millet rice in the rice cooker. Did everyones' mom watch the same viral youtube video??
Being a columnist was a dream I never even dared to have. Didn’t win any awards, but a few years ago, the lady taking my order at the taco truck I’ve gone to for a decade recognized me as “that guy who writes about the neighborhoods.” I’d argue that’s basically an LA pulitzer.
A few years ago, I was reporting in South LA and a local pastor asked "what are you doing here?" He said the LAT, especially Asians, "don't come down here." As part of our LA riots 30th anniversary coverage, I wrote about figuring out what he meant.
I wrote about the eviction of Little Tokyo's Suehiro Cafe. I ask whether rail development is reproducing freeway racism, because it's most harmful effects are borne by Chinatown, Boyle Heights, Inglewood, Little Tokyo, Koreatown and others.
This non-apology, which makes the bizarre, illogical claim that racist remarks are justified by frustration over racism, just digs the grave deeper. "sorry" has never been more meaningless.
NEW:
@CD6Nury
has issued a statement apologizing for comments she made in a leaked audio recording, which was obtained by the
@latimes
. In it she makes racist remarks about
@mikebonin
's son among other things.
Really appreciate how much Shohei fandom among Asians is just plain thirst. Sat behind a Taiwanese family that could barely contain themselves lol. As for me I bought angels tickets seconds after seeing this picture of his arms
I wrote about a little mochi shop in Gardena that never has a line, but almost always sells out, where two brothers have come to appreciate their role as not just creators of familiar flavors but stewards of a community's precious memories
Wow never realized how stacked Las Tunas/Mission in San Gabriel is with Asian food now. Like seven boba places plus heavy hitters like Golden Deli, Hui Tou Xiang, bonchon, yuk dae jang, tasty noodle house, Yama seafood down the street, dessert places.
Haven’t see this many of my coworkers in years. it was
@latguild
did the hard work of building this community, showing up for each other, trying to find common ground and having each other’s back. It’s far more leadership than management has ever shown
To any politician that is looking to appeal to the Asian American community: I would like to offer my services. As you can see my face looks very Asian on camera. We can go to dim sum and you can order. I will grade you based on the order and how long you take to peel a shrimp
I wrote about the Black Korean conflict, and what it's like reporting in the aftermath of the Los Angeles Riots with a face that many mistake for Korean.
Back at work today y'all. My column will be back on Monday and running weekly after that. Grateful for the chance to take a break and for the people in my life. Feeling genuinely excited to get started.
We’re hiring an Asian American communities reporter! If you want to cover Asian American issues, communities and culture, there’s really no better place to do it than socal
Literally exulting in the taste of any/all food that did not spend 45 mins in a styrofoam container. The best restaurant is every restaurant, 5 stars for all
I haven’t found my cat, but thank you to those who helped me look or passed the word along, truly grateful. I hope she is ok and that someone is taking good care of her 💔
Asians: hey our food is similar I wonder why wow culture is fascinating
Koreans: actually this is a special, unique, only in Korea dish, marinated in Korean sauce for 24 Korean hours using a special Korean technique known only to genetically pure Koreans
Little Tokyo gift shop owner says the citypop and 80’s albums he’s stocked for 20 years are suddenly flying off the shelves at inflated prices. Tatsuro Yamashita and others aren’t on streaming, but this place (Ginza gifts) has them on vinyl. Why is city pop so popular rn?
Wish this was surprising, but this kind of blatantly corrupt, utterly self interested racial politicking has almost always been a part of the council's operation.
First they put cheese on boba and we said nothing. Then they put cheese on ramen and still, we said nothing. Then they put cheese in ice cream and and there was no one left to say anything
Latest column: before Yong Yang was fatally shot by an LAPD officer, he was happier than he had been in years, his family said, maintaining relationships, living independently and in close contact with relatives.
A day after my

piece on Danny Park and the skid row peoples market, he made the front page of the Korea Daily. Photo via

Larry Elder is an example of a model minority candidate, a politician who succeeds by betraying their community. Think of it as first stepping on the people around you so you can appear to be pulling yourself up by the bootstraps, writes

No one ever talks about how convenient Venice is. Whatever you need - Incense, henna tattoos or pictures of stoned Nintendo characters, all right there. Surfboard magnets? Reggae cd’s? Just steps away and thrust conveniently into your hands
Actually this isn’t true. I won the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. This is also essentially an LA Pulitzer
I'm starting a semi-regular feature in the column called Intersections. Basically, I'll write about an intersection describe the community there - actual intersections yes, but also intersections of culture, people and places.
If a white media man is canceled for racism in 2021, they stand to reap a bari weiss/TCW/whoever op-ed, an appearance on bill maher, weeks of blind support of multiple accounts with enormous platforms and possibly a benyt or wapo column & conservative stardom should they choose
The mission burrito is overrated and poorly constructed. There are too many ingredients. The tortilla is soggy. The burrito is overstuffed and slowly implodes as you eat it. The mingled sauces leak out of the wrapper like a dirty diaper.
I probably wouldn’t be in journalism any more if it wasn’t for Reed. He listened to us, believed us, and tried to make the LA Times a more humane place. Forever grateful
I’ve been laid off, but am grateful this remarkable woman could be my final LA Times story. “Can L.A.'s Maria Rosario Jackson use art to heal an anxious America? Joe Biden thinks so”
About 5 minutes after stepping foot into NYC Chinatown, I met Corky. A few minutes after that he was introducing me to everyone, offering me rides, putting me onto pastrami fried rice. He was unflappable and hilarious, like a Chinese American Christopher Walken. I'll miss him.
Corky Lee, the unofficial photo laureate of the Asian-American community, has died of COVID. The photo that epitomizes his work was this recreation of the famed Golden Spike Transcontinental Railroad with descendants of railroad workers.
I've been trying to hold this take in but I just can't any more. The "east side" (silverlake etc) and the westside are not really that different! eastsiders stop trying to pretend like you wouldn't love all of the same stuff on the westside. You all like the same bougie things!
Leaving is hard bc I loved this work. But it’s time to move on - I’ll be writing a newsletter, working on a novel and traveling. I'll have more specifics soon but drop your email here if you want to keep up with my writing:
When I started this beat in 2013, I might've been the only reporter writing about Asians full time - now there are several such positions. I was the 1st Asian American metro columnist in the newspaper’s history. I'm happy that there's so many more people doing this work.
Kei Ai Los Angeles was built to serve the Japanese community. Since last march, it's also served as a county-designated COVID ward to relieve overcrowded ICU's. 97 have died. Many say they were never informed that the facility was accepting transfers.
