I’m so happy to share this exciting news. I’m writing a book!!! Big love to my agent
@DaniSegelbaum
. Can’t wait to share this one with all of you in a couple years…
I feel really burnt out lately and I'm trying to be more honest about it. I don't have the energy to text my friends back a lot of the time. I feel isolated and want to sleep a lot. Work is ... hard. I've mentioned this to a couple friends, who said they feel the same way.
I feel like we've hit this point in the pandemic that's sort of just a perfect storm for feeling this way. We're six months in, this is just how life is now, and it's lonely and exhausting. Early on, I felt like it was constant trauma, and now I just feel so, so tired.
I don't know how to fix this. Weekends don't feel like time to recharge, but naming how I'm feeling and being open about it has made me feel less alone, so I figured I'd say it here in case it helps other people.
As good a time as any to note, again, that DC is a historically black city of 700,000 people — more people than Wyoming — who pay taxes, have been denied the rights granted to states, and because of that have no ability to stop federal law enforcement from occupying the city.
Asked AOC if she thinks — as some have called for — that Warren should drop out and endorse Sanders. “I don’t think that’s up to me. I think that’s a very deeply personal decision,” she said. Said Sanders + his supporters shoud instead be making the push to earn those votes.
Democratic primary voters under 35 years old via new Quinnipiac poll:
Sanders 52%
Warren 17%
Biden 11%
Yang 7%
Gabbard 3%
Buttigieg 2%
Bloomberg 2%
Everyone else 1% or less
a serious quarantine question is how hard is it to learn to cut hair??? (my boyfriend needs/wants a haircut and i boldly have offered to do it despite never having cut hair in my life)
This is a whole disaster. Republicans ordered pizza, apparently, and are just like, refusing to leave. Swalwell is outside the SCIF and says they will “not be deterred by this.” Calls it “Republican obstruction of Congress at the behest of the president.”
my boyfriend thought of a good tweet but he says it’s more for my audience than his so anyway here’s a curated tweet from him for you guys:
just imagine if we had to keep hearing high hopes through all of this
Yesterday, I published a story about Equinox cutting instructor pay as gyms reopen and the health concerns instructors had going back to work. Today, Equinox fired Monica Davis, who went on the record with me to speak out.
the exact Pelosi quote is actually somehow worse than this tweet: "So again, thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice. For being there to call out to your mom, how heartbreaking was that, call out for your mom, 'I can't breathe.'"
One time my exboyfriend told me he could tell I learned the song Don’t Stop Believing from Glee because I enunciated every word when I sing it and I think about that literally every single day, sometimes twice
just want to pop in and let everyone know there’s a dude on tiktok whose whole account is him saying good morning to the dogs at the doggie daycare where he works and it’s the last good thing on the internet!
I just asked Rep. Speier if she had seen Mulvaney’s press conference this afternoon. She said just a clip but has the gist. I asked if she wants him to testify.
“I think Mulvaney should go to jail,” she said. “Don’t quote me on that.” (I was never going to not quote her on that.)
I just saw several cases of soda carted in there, too. The House has votes scheduled in about a half an hour. Hilariously, they need to vote on the SHIELD Act, which aims to protect US elections from foreign interference. So do with that what you will.
i'll be honest, because no reason not to be: i'm furious with buzzfeed today. so many of our amazing new colleagues have been laid off in the middle of a pandemic, using a lottery-esque notification system that workers at buzzfeed have repeatedly said is inhumane and horrifying
OK first of all I think gas masks basically are hats, which are illegal on the floor and also taking pictures on the House floor is also definitely not allowed but nothing matters
Today is the first day of Eating Disorder awareness week, so: I'm one of the estimated 1 in 10 people who has battled an eating disorder — but those numbers are likely much higher, as expects believe that many people with disordered eating aren't diagnosed.
I just asked
@AOC
about the Sanders/Warren story that unfolded yday.
She said she defers to the campaigns but added, “I think it's also important to say that, of course, women can win. And that's part of a progressive ideology and I know that the senator believes that as well.”
12-year-old Messiah traveled to DC to march today and waded into the reflecting pool to raise a fist while Al Sharpton spoke. “It’s not fair that because of the color of our skin we have to get treated differently,” he said.
two weeks ago buzzfeed won a pulitzer, this week we're going public. now if only we could get that pesky union contract done... or even get some responses to our economic proposals....
From me and
@bri_sacks
: 4 women told us Madison Cawthorn was aggressive, misogynistic, or predatory toward them, including one account of harassment during their time in college together from a woman who currently works for another Republican in Congress:
So, yes! I have some ~personal news~.
Next Wednesday will be my last day at
@thinkprogress
. At the end of the month, I’m headed to
@BuzzFeedNews
to cover Democrats and the growing leftist forces in Congress and around the country. I’m absolutely over the moon about it!
We interviewed more than 3 dozen people for this story, and corroborated the accounts of all the women who alleged misconduct by Cawthorn. There are so many details I can’t even begin to fit them in a tweet, so do read it:
i am several days into a fight with my boyfriend after he said he would not still date me if i turned into a worm because he didn't want to engage with the premise of the question but then LATER said he WOULD date me if i became a PIG how's everyone else holding up
"The whistleblower has the right to remain anonymous," Schiff says. "The President wants to make this all about the whistleblower." Calls it "a blatant effort to intimidate witnesses" and "an incitement of violence."
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy gets asked about Qanon supporters Marjorie Taylor Green and Lauren Boebert, who were both elected to the House GOP. "Our party is very diverse," he says. "Both have denounced Qanon." (That is not true.)
A scoop from yours truly this morning:
@BrandNew535
— a progressive group that helped catapult
@AOC
to success — is endorsing
@MeetMckayla
, the 29-year-old student and mom who’s challenging Steny Hoyer, the number two Dem in the House.
Just came out of the chamber to report that Sen. Sinema is wearing the most incredible neon green heeled latex boots and honestly just a glimpse of them gave me a second wind
I'm watching the debate tonight with some South Bend-ers. One of them said they like the fact that he supports a $15 minimum wage, but noted the minimum wage in South Bend is $7.25.
Civil Rights hero Rep. John Lewis is speaking on the floor.
"It is not a day of joy," he says. "When you see something that is not right, you have a moral obligation to do something. Our children will ask, 'What did you do? What did you say?'"
We just published a story that's pretty different from my normal work. I really hope you'll read!
I wrote about my own struggles to maintain my eating disorder recovery during the coronavirus outbreak, and talked to experts and other people struggling.
I got this heartbreaking text this morning (shared with his permission) from John Pijanowski, whose father I wrote about as part of our going coronavirus victims project. Here’s his story:
Murkowski statement: “I have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the Senate. I don’t believe the continuation of this process will change anything. It is sad for me to admit that, as an institution, the Congress has failed."
A rare compliment from Congressional progressives to Pete Buttigieg just now — Rep. Mark Takano says it was Buttigieg who he first heard mention the idea of including a sunset date in any future AUMFs, which gets lots of “yes good” nods from the other members here.
I will just note, there was not a word from Pelosi about the fact that Hill says her abusive, estranged husband was behind the release of the photos, something that every journalist talking about this and every politician talking about this should absolutely note.
Pelosi says it was Katie's Hill's decision to resign, but adds, "I do tell my grandchildren, these appearances can come back on social media to haunt you if they are taken out of context... I caution everyone that they too may be subject to that, so be careful."
Pelosi says she wants to remember “one person who isn’t with us in this room but who I know was present with us all day in the deliberations... our North Star,” Eliah Cummings. “We did all we could Elijah. The president is impeached.”
.
@SpeakerPelosi
speaking at presser with CBC: Thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice...Because of you and because of thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice, your name will always be synonymous for justice.
As gyms across the country are reopening, Equinox, the high-end gym chain owned by a Trump pal, is asking its instructors to come back to work — and to do so for even less money than they were pre-COVID. Instructors are pissed.
Here's the story:
Hi folks. A little bit of personal news from me today: I am going to be taking a buyout this summer and leaving my role at BuzzFeed News. Here's a few more thoughts on that to save you a tweet thread :) —>
i tweet a lot about how union bargaining is amazing, vital, fun, revelatory, etc. and that is all true but i just want to be honest and say that it also sucks
Really smart catch from
@kadiagoba
: Mike Pence's brother is on the House Foreign Affairs committee, which means he's sitting in on all these impeachment depositions!
“Nielsen’s complaint comes as many Mormons across the United States are engaged in discussions with their bishops, traditionally held in December, to ‘settle’ their dues to the church.”
Sanders as he left: “It’s a sad day for the country. I think that the acquittal of Trump, and the fact that we only had one Republican voting to impeach sends a signal to future presidents that you can operate above the law, you don't have to pay attention to the Constitution.”
A major victory for the progressive movement tonight in Illinois, where Marie Newman took down Dem. Rep. Dan Lipinski, one of the last anti-abortion Democrats in the House. My story on the win:
Ritchie Torres has won his race, and he's now set to become the first Black gay member of Congress. Mondaire Jones is expected to join him (but that race hasn't been called quite yet):
Few frontline Democrats have officially won reelection, and several have officially lost. But Katie Porter, easily one of the most progressive of the bunch and running in a tight swing district, has won her race. This logic just does not make sense.
my boyfriend has been trying to make me care about the gamestop stuff for like a week and i've been like "ok bud" and then i woke up today and decided i was an expert and will not stop sending him tweets he's already seen. having fun
A scoop from me:
@BernieSanders
is endorsing Marie Newman in her quest to take down Dan Lipinski, one of the House's last anti-abortion Democrats. Story here:
jake gyllenhaal has done a lot for us but the most important thing he's done is give us all too well (followed closely by that video of him talking about how much he loves sean paul)
Rep. Gerry Connolly on the full House Iran briefing and any evidence of any imminent threat: “There was no rationale beyond a graduate school thesis text. I was utterly unpersuaed about any evidence of a threat that was new or imminent.”
Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue — who are facing a special election that will determine Senate control early next month — have announced their support for $2,000 stimulus checks:
