Wild idea - I’m going to start sharing all I know about wrestling on Instagram. I’ve been fortunate with my experiences and knowledge acquired. It’d be a shame to take it with me.
If you’re interested, give it a follow.
Selfishly, I was really looking forward to Sarah vs Vinesh. Sarah wrestled so well yesterday and of course is ours 🇺🇸 and Vinesh was carrying the banner of an entire nation 🇮🇳. Not a small one either 😳
Wrestling world lost out on a great moment. 😞
I rarely pull this card but as a former NCAA Champ and knowing how impossible it is to win that tournament, what Shane Griffith just did through the cut of the program and living with COVID in CA is absolutely mind-blowing. One of the greatest accomplishments in NCAA history!
If you’re HUNGRY, you’re not cutting weight. If you’re not thirsty enough to drink any kind of water - pool, tap, hose - you’re not cutting. 99% of the country will never understand this.
If you quit wrestling, just have the sack to say it was too flipping hard. We know it. You know it. Wrestlers pride themselves on that. Just admit you couldn’t take the physical, mental, and emotional toll it requires. The ones that can are special. And then, we can move on...
Again, unpopular take but accurate and necessary. College athletics are for 18-23 year olds. It was never intended to be a decade long journey where you strategically use multiple “shirts” to wrestle through your 20’s.
The weight cut takes by people who are starving because they haven’t eaten in 6 hours are 🔥 I’ve forgotten a lot about my wrestling career but not the weight cuts. Not the Gatorade dreams. Not the bone dry skin in the sauna. That shit stays.
My son got 2nd today. And he looked his worst in the finals. And I’m not just his dad, but his coach.
We talked about the match and how he kind of reverted to his old, less advanced wrestling self. But at the end I said, “Don’t mistake criticism for negativity or disappointment.
I just don't see how the 'Gold or Bust' mentality makes you any more successful as an athlete. Anyone at this level is sold out for Olympic Gold. But appreciating the moment, even in defeat, is part of being a true competitor. The all-time greats just seem to love to compete and
A friend and college coach once told me when asked about what he wanted out of wrestling for his kid something I’ll never forget. My kids were very young. He said, “I want my son to want to go to the NCAA’s with me when he’s 25.” One of the most impactful statements on me.
Spencer Lee loses his first match in a year and has more accolades than most, if not all, in college — takes it like a man. Love watching Lee. You can tell he loves and respects the sport. He’ll be back.
I enjoy watching Gable Steveson as much as I enjoy watching Spencer Lee. I didn’t even notice half of the winners were black. I didn’t notice the all the black vs white match ups. Just two warriors trying to win a title. I hope a majority of wrestling fans share this sentiment.
Been at a youth wrestling tournament all day. Best piece of advice I’d have for any dad/coach - say less. Let the kids think, react, make decisions - good & bad, and let them wrestle! It’s a big part of the development process. Playing puppet master is a short-term solution.
This is the troubling trend in college athletics - exponential growth in administration (ie management).
@Stanford
has an AD, 2 deputy AD’s, 4 exec associate AD’s, 1 Sr associate AD, and 5 associate AD’s in addition to 4 support staff (assistants). That’s 13 AD’s - 1 university.
I know I don’t have many young wrestlers on Twitter but my God, take note at the HIP DEFENSE tonight! Not a bunch of jumping over the top. Basic solid defense. Fundamentals win at the elite level!!
Every time I thought Burroughs lost to Father Time, he had an answer. Absolutely incredible he’s been this good for so long. Nothing but respect for the guy who resurrected USA Wrestling. If you don’t know, you should. 🙏❤️👊
Now that winning 3 titles is shunned, I hope we don’t lose the 👍 or the long-standing ☝️or celebration is going to get real challenging... 🙄
Embarrassing times we live in.
After eliminating the 11 sports, Stanford will drop from 155 coaches to only 128 (paid employees) while maintaining 240 administrative positions, or basically 2 admin for every coach on campus. THIS is the problem with college sports. Not Title IX. Not COVID. Pure mismanagement.
This is actually really good for the sport and why more and more fans keep packing arenas. Maybe a tad long before the handshake but entertaining and fun. Welcome to the new wrestling.
My favorite part - watch how the Iowa State kid just gets up and walks back to the center at the end, barely phased. This would damn near kill 99% of people. Wrestlers are different 😈
If you’re a wrestler and allow your doctor to repair your meniscus instead of just trim the torn area, you aren’t serious about being a wrestler. They will insist it be repaired for your long-term health. 😒 You are a combat athlete. Not a 50-year old sedentary man. You aren’t
Speaking from experience, you can’t possibly fathom how much these kids live their sport at the collegiate level. You aren’t a regular human. You are singularly focused. It’s the only way to be the best amongst the elite. My heart truly breaks for all of them. I’m sick. 💔😢
After dropping 3 sports today,
@FSAthletics
is down to 75 coaches from 82 and 15 sports programs. Still 108 athletic department employees (non-revenue generating) including 10 (yes 10) athletic directors. But COVID and Title IX are the problem... 🧐
I don’t share much family stuff but somehow my son has a gift for hitting a baseball. No idea how long it’ll last and it’s surely not from me, but fun to witness. I’m not easily impressed but 5 in 4 games at 97lbs is not bad at 12. And yes, he’s still going to wrestle 😎
I guess one of the reasons I'm irritated with the Fix treatment is - one of my favorite parts of the tournament is to applaud the warriors that are finishing their careers for all they've given over 4, 5, 6, or now 7 years. Especially those who don't go out on top because I feel
This is elementary level reffing. I’m embarrassed the college level has come to this. I’ve always spoke highly of college refereeing. Whoever is instructing these guys needs to be fired immediately.
This won’t be popular with Hawk fans but I’ve always had a lot of respect for Iowa and their willingness to wrestle. I don’t love ‘em, but I respect them. They finished with 4 medical forfeits and 2 in the finals. That’s not the Iowa I know.
One of best moments in coaching is watching a kid go all-in & 100% commit to making a big change. Then trusting you when it doesn’t result in immediate success. And then finally witnessing a breakthrough. It’s what keeps me coming back. Great day of wrestling with a sweet finale!
Showing kids moves is easy. Coaching is hard. Great coaching relies on delayed gratification and more often than not, being unpopular on a regular basis. Everyday I’m more and more thankful for the great coaches in my life.
The problem with this is it’s the opposite of how to grow the sport. Prevent celebration, take away team points, and cause the other team to win. Basketball team makes a shot at the buzzer, kids storm court, ref takes away points and other team wins?? No, because it makes no
Wyalusing leading Athens, 35-30, in the final bout of their District 4 Duals first round match. Athens’ Mason Vanderpool scores fall with 22 seconds to go to give Athens a 36-35 win. Official deducts team point from Athens for celebration coming on mat. Wyalusing wins on criteria
Twitter was literally made for wrestlers’ weight cutting stories 😂 They sound so ridiculous you’d think they are made up. But the human body’s survival instincts are amazing and most haven’t ever tapped into starvation & dehydration. Hint: dehydration wins 😎
Wrestlers never sub themselves out. However tired they are, they’ve been there 1,000 times and then some. And no one more competitive or tougher than Josh! Just needed a shot. You can’t see intangibles on film or stat lines!
@_Josh_Hokit117
With Kyle Juszczyk out, rookie Josh Hokit has taken all 49ers’ fullback snaps lately. Shanahan just glowed about Hokit, who hasn’t subbed himself out at practice even when he’s been “exhausted” given the extra reps. The 49ers haven’t had to lessen their 21 personnel usage rate
Seriously, best tweet of the championships. Wrestling is a brotherhood. While we all want to beat the shit out of each other, you admire your adversaries for toeing the line — one of the hardest things in sports. Respect
@Pitt_WRES
🙏
This photo DOES NOT exist anywhere! My business partner has been looking for a copy (w/o my knowledge) since July 3, 2017. Thank you to
@Mike_Lightner34
and his mom, Becky, for saving an extra copy all these years! Such a great Memorial Day gift (and not a bad group of champs)!
The worst part about
@CardWrestling
is that Borrelli and crew have them nationally competitive, probably with their best team ever in 20-21. Woods, Griffith, Abas, Traxler, van see Merwe, etc. All that effort to tear a program down. Stanford endowment - $27.7 billion 😑
There are levels to “hard”. Most people don’t even realize how many levels exist above the things they perceive as hard. College wrestling is a 98 when most humans operate on a 1 to 10 scale.
Doc B 2020 already confirmed:

For all of our differences, I have always loved the Iranian 🇮🇷 wrestlers and their wrestling culture. The way Yazdani went out wasn’t with gold, but epitomized their grit, love, and respect for the sport. If this is it for him, he’s easily one of my Top 5 favorite foreign
Most underrated aspect of coaching is ENERGY. I’m tired after a great practice. You have to bring energy and effort to the room to get the best out of your athletes. You go through the motions, so do they. It’s a lot harder this way but most things worth having usually are.
If your favorite team or wrestler didn’t win, take a second go thank them anyway for doing what they do for 365 days a year to give us those 3 days. They are warriors beyond measure and it’s a pleasure to be entertained so thoroughly. Thanks fellas!
#NCAAWrestling
If you haven’t been to this tournament, you’re missing out. There is nothing better. If you think you’ve been to something that compares, you haven’t. If you’ve even stepped foot on the mat at an NCAA Championships, congrats. It’s very elite company.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but I say it with all due respect to your political beliefs. You can be ultra liberal or crazy conservative and still believe that biological males should not compete against biological females in sport. This should NOT be a political issue.
Most overlooked guy in the tournament was Parker Keckeisen. And his bond with his team is pretty cool to see in an era of NLI. Love watching UNI and what they have built with their athletes. I can't say I'm happy about every UNI guy that's ever won, but I was rooting hard for
Here’s the truth. Take it or leave it. We need 2 things from athletes: buy-in & staying power. We can’t out coach quitting. Our results are dependent upon having a kid for 4-7 yrs. Give me parents that value the process & commit their kid will finish. The success will follow.
Absolutely unheard of for a first year program with attendance numbers better than Oklahoma St and Minnesota! Shows what’s possible at
@FresnoStateWRES
. Can’t wait for year 2! The Valley loves wrestling!
Had a kid recently quit wrestling to focus on another sport. Didn’t do a damn thing for said sport all winter. This is the norm and the reality of “specialization”. The rarity is the guy who actually uses all that extra time to hone his craft, lift, etc.
Listen, that match sucked and we can blame the refs but at the bottom line, that was BAD for wrestling. Try offense. Reward offense. Nothing about that was good or entertaining. And I’m a die hard.
Close your eyes imagine football where we got to the Big10 title game and one team forfeited to save themselves physically for the College Football Playoff. They didn’t come to win conference titles. That’s where we are. No amount of rationalization will make this a good thing.
There are very few wrestlers that I’ll truly MISS watching after a career is over. But Jason Nolf is on that list. He’s an animal, an innovator, fearless, tireless, and full of class. Can’t think of a better example for our sport.
The losers taunting Burroughs weren’t even watching international wrestling when he won his first World Title. Success is great, but it sure does bring out the bandwagoners.
For the record and those who haven’t wrestled in college, guys WANT to escape and guys WANT to turn. It’s just that that difficult to turn at college level. And thus, you end up with riding. No one is riding as an alternative to turning or “laying on bottom” out of choice.
I don’t know
@BoBassett06
but him winning Cadet World Gold at 14, signing a waiver just be able to compete, in the fashion he did (all TF & pins) is one of the more remarkable wrestling accomplishments I’ve witnessed. Legendary is overused but that was utterly ridiculous! 🤯🇺🇸
We wrestled in the HOF Duals last week in Stillwater, OK. The best part was watching the legend, John Smith in the stands for both days of the duals. Coach moves with every Stillwater HS wrestler and watched 4 sessions of high school wrestling over 2 days.
I can’t tell you how
Just wanted to say I enjoyed the hell out of wrestling Twitter this last week. Nice to find a common bond to bring everyone together and remember we’re all on the same team 🇺🇸 Thanks to everyone who engaged and made the long nights more fun! Until the World’s (2 months) ✌️
This is just not difficult shit USA Wrestling. Can we just get an internet feed for all mats? Do whatever you have to do with TV rights bud losing an entire mat for semis is just unacceptable. You wonder why NCAA college wrestling is more popular... 😑😡
John Smith has reached the point where two epic skillsets come together — a wealth of wrestling knowledge like no one possibly on the planet and the willing to say whatever he wants because he just doesn’t GAF. And it’s glorious! 🙌🤣
Don’t get me wrong, the Olympic wrestling has been great, but the Olympic wrestling has also been significantly better because of John Smith on the mic. He’s the best.
If you don’t score ANY points, it’s not because the other guy was stalling. You’re just not good enough. Take some risk. Get better. The stall whine is pathetic and like a 1st grader tattling to the teacher. Grow up. 🙄
Izzak Olejnik placed twice in CA state, 4th and 5th. His dad was a state champ wrestler so he’d been around the sport from an early age. But probably didn’t win many youth titles. And we wrestled him a lot being from Bakersfield. Always a good wrestler. Never a great wrestler, at
@CarliLloyd
Great response. Men and women are different, not better or worse, and that’s a good thing. Women’s sports are just as good as men’s sports, just different. Much respect for not trying to spin it. The more people that understand this, the better both gender’s sports will be.
Parenting by wrestlers.
Kid: I’m thirsty
Me: Get some water.
Kid: I don’t want water.
Me: Then you’re not that thirsty. When you’re thirsty enough, you’ll want water. 😈😂
Those who actually wrestled, especially at higher levels, are rarely insane dads. It’s not a coincidence. I love to watch my kid wrestle. Just seeing him struggle and fight I know he’s becoming a stronger person in all ways. You miss the joy in the sport being consumed with wins.
The depth and quality of college wrestling right now is insane. Please tell me again how someone is “only an All-American”. 😑 There has never been a time where the tournament is tougher than it is right now.
Seriously, this is impressive. 2ND YEAR PROGRAM defeats Oregon State winning 7 matches! Wins from Lemoore, Clovis North, Clovis (3x), and Dinuba had the Valley well repped. Great job
@FresnoStateWRES
!
'DOGS WIN! Bulldogs defeat Oregon State, 27-13 in front of 2,437 fans at the Save Mart Center! The 'Dogs (7-6) are back home on Sunday vs. No. 11 Wyoming at 12 p.m.!
#GoDogs
Some of you guys claiming these college kids are “stallers” and “boring wrestlers”, I would love to see some of your matches. 😏 It’s so easy to talk the talk.
If you read my post about finding the goodness in loss or hard moments I said I would share this video.
My husband Doug has been at the top of this sport. He has won a state title, a NCAA title, the US Open, World Team trials, placed 5th at the world, and was an Olympian.
I love how wrestling is full of tough guys but the mere mention of not being able to forfeit to avoid losing sends people through the roof. What other sport allows you to quit mid-competition because you aren’t fit enough to continue AND it doesn’t count against you? I’ll wait...
Show up and compete. No matter who the opponent or what the odds. And it’s one of the toughest things in sports - to be determined to give your best, even when you know your best won’t be good enough. That’s what wrestling is supposed to teach you for life, to never concede.
🧵The NCAA's is not only the most fun you can have in wrestling, it's a chance to learn & evolve with a rapidly changing sport. These athletes are on the cutting edge of techniques & strategies that lead to the most success with the least resistance. Here are a few observations:
If you truly think Spencer Lee’s arm bar is dangerous, you likely dip your boneless wings in honey mustard at Applebee’s. As I have learned from my Buffalo friends, that is NOT a compliment.
Cliff Fretwell is one of the rarities in wrestling. He gives more than he takes. He follows through on promises. And he actually provides avenues for the sport to grow. If you’ve never hosted, you can’t imagine what an undertaking it is. And he nailed it, again. Be like Cliff 🙏
Shout outs from Session 4:

South Dakota State
Carr/O’Toole - best semi in an epic rivalry
Gomez, Andonian, and anyone else who had the balls to let it fly and entertain us fans
Hats off 👏🙌

I think one of the most difficult things about coaching wrestling is getting kids to fight but then restraining themselves to the rules of wrestling. Room temperature water is easy. Boiling water is easy. It’s keeping it just under the boiling point that’s magic.
You’re not a real wrestling fan if you have no empathy for those who came up short this weekend. Even the rival wrestlers or the guys you hate watching. Heart and soul goes into this sport for all.
The good news is, it says more about you than the athletes. And it allows us to
We’ve reached a wacky state in this state. One where you can’t live life, even with masks & social distancing measures, but you can protest, riot, loot, and take over city blocks by the hundreds of thousands. It’s very sad and depressing. I feel for my kids.
#thanksGavin
Two things you HAVE to possess to win at the college level:
1. Leg attack
2. Head, hands, hip defense
If you go into college with only 1 or worse none of these (that you can execute on elite competition), you are way behind the curve.
Happy to argue to the death on this one 😉
We’ve come to a place where people believe committing somewhere and then taking official visits to other places is normal. Might as well post your engagement video and then tell your fiancé you have to run because you have a date. You’re just having fun before the wedding 🤨
AJ Ferrari is the new Johnny Hendricks. I’ve waited so long for this! I’m so here for it! Please bring back the fans ASAP. I never had so much fun as when Johnny wrestled. Love him or hate him, everyone was vested! 🔥
If I had my way, I’d lower HWT to 265. The Olympic HWT is 264lbs. Grown ass men top out at 264 but we need high school at 285? And by lowering, you could remove 220 and get weights back clustered around where wrestling numbers are thickest.
Michael Jordan on leadership is the best. It’s so not what people think. It often means being the permanent asshole until one day, it all makes sense. I’d be surprised if any of those Bulls would trade their championship(s) for a “nicer guy” & no titles. “Winning has a price” -MJ
Name me better scoring top wrestler than Spencer Lee. I just can’t think of anyone like him in the last 30 years. Before that I’ll concede I’m not as knowledgeable.
