This is true. In indigenous African life, drums are a form of communication+storytelling. Since so many African ethnic groups were enslaved, they understood each other through drums. North America banned African drums but they didn't ban African string instruments like the banjo.
Africans enslaved in the British colony of South Carolina weren’t allowed to own or use drums because of its ability to “speak” in an unknown language and its potential to sow the seeds of rebellion. The colonials had good reason to fear the “talking drum.”

I recently started a new teaching job and part of my job is to tutor at a local juvenile hall. Over half the kids in there are Black. mostly Black boys. It's so obvious the carceral state systematically targets Black males starting from childhood.

I went to a Juneteenth celebration in my hometown & place of residence (Pittsburg, CA). There was funk dancing, blues, Ugandan drummers, Black ppl in dashikis & a sense of fire+urgency. It was so beautiful to see. It made me happy to see my ppl together & celebrating.
