@adastroworld @KelseyTuoc @goblinodds (I didn't mind this because underrepresented minorities / women are in fact underrepresented, and the people who did get these fellowships, like Trajan, generally seemed to me to be competent. But I do think such programs are plainly illegal.)

@adastroworld @KelseyTuoc @goblinodds This is the usual way that these programs try to avoid outright breaking the law but it is understood that white people are not expected to apply and would be rejected if they did.

@KelseyTuoc @goblinodds also the race-neutral grants have probably gone out by now (I think they're usually done by mid Janaury); that idea would be good if workable but is probably not workable

@KelseyTuoc @goblinodds it seems pretty easy to avoid this particular consequence: cancel it in a couple months, instead of in the relatively short interval between applications being submitted and grants being made

@brianrknight @ptdamiba @patio11 Personally I think on net this would be good, because the fact that people producing content for OnlyFans are often denied bank accounts is ridiculous. But I could be wrong; it could well be that allowing crypto companies would more-than-double banks' losses to fraud etc.

@justksthings3 @eigenrobot did you read the thread? he was specifically discouraged from doing so by this fellowship. that's on the fellowship, not him. also he has papers on arxiv you can read, if you have the background. I do and can confirm he is in fact good
Why didn’t I apply for the ‘normal’ math postdoc fellowship (MSPRF)? There are a number of reasons. (1) The primary reason is because the MPS-Ascend application specifically discourages you from doing this and I didn’t want to risk my application by going against this 7/n.

@tracewoodgrains @IsaacKing314 @slimepriestess @noncanonicAleae it is possible to have infinite expansion of the circle of care while still having a duty to the near 1/2 of your total concern is for your immediate family, 1/4 your cousins, 1/8th your community, 1/16th your countrymen, etc in fact I think something like this is ideal

@eigenrobot yeah also the payment system is still off and shows no sign of being turned back on and they also didn't cancel the stop-work orders so, no, it is not funded in any meaningful sense, the waiver did nothing

@HotPotatoPanda @KelseyTuoc there can even be a presumption that people have grown past stupid shit they said when they were in high school or whatever but if you were still declaring yourself a racist when you were 25, it's on you to demonstrate that you've grown. especially if you're still 25.

@HotPotatoPanda @KelseyTuoc if he has sincerely grown and learned I am OK with him being back in power, sure. not sure two months is enough time for that, but maybe it is. but the VP doesn't think he ought to apologize. so this is not "if he has grown..." it's "we straight up don't care if he's racist".

@HotPotatoPanda @KelseyTuoc If you're mature enough to be in a position of power in the government, you're mature enough not to say stupid shit anymore. It's not like he did this stuff when he was much younger. It was literally in the past few months.

@kitten_beloved @tracewoodgrains "Repent and be accepted" is not the proposition on the table. It's whether he is accepted by the ascendent right _without_ repenting. And the vice president is specifically lashing out against the notion that he should have to apologize first, so it seems the answer is yes.

@teethofangels @eigenrobot @Invertible_Man the babies who were getting antivirals to prevent them from getting HIV from their mothers - many of those babies are going to die, who would otherwise live. at this point that is already baked in. third world mothers saving money somehow would not fix that problem.
