My grandfather was a free mason. He would often take me to the lodge as a kid. IMO It's just a bunch of men LARPing. They make business connections and talk about how to make society better by following the old ways. Most of them were architects, politicians and bankers.

You need to be up at 62 miles or 100Km up to begin to see the curve. The problem is people that think the Earth is flat have a problem with the part of their brain that deals with scale and 3d spaces. It's the equivalent of telling a color-blind person what a blue or red is.

The accurate map is the globe because its 3-dimensional sphere. When you try to draw a 3d surface on a flat map it will be distorted. The compromise was to do it the way they do.

Most of the atmosphere is close to the earth. Gravity effects are proportional to the mass. The density of the air gets less meaning less mass as you go higher.
