I had just had dinner at some minutes past 8pm. So I stepped outside to get some air, especially because I had been indoors all day.
I had not stayed up to 20mins outside when I heard a loud thud. It came from inside my room.
When I rushed in, I saw these:
10 Yorùbá first names I've heard and loved:
1. Oluwalanaire - God paved a favourable way
2. Folawe - Bathe with wealth
3. Abimifoluwa - I was born for God
4. Morountodun - I found something sweet
5. Nihinlolawa - This is where wealth resides
I'm grateful for safety and that I can come here to tweet after everything.
Grateful to the hunch that has told me repeatedly to leave this house.
Grateful to the project I was put on that would make me gather my rent money soon!
Grateful to heat that pushed me out by force.
In the meantime, I seriously need to make friends in this Lagos so I can have somewhere to run to on nights like this.
Now I have to sleep with one eyes open and keep a vigil through the night.
In the end, I return all glory back to God, the one who keeps me under His wings. 🤲
In all of these, the only thing that kept coming to my mind was "What if you were inside?" "What if you were sleeping?" "What if you didn't have hot pap for dinner and didn't need to outside for air?" "What if one of these heavy concrete fell on your laptop?"
So many "what if"s
Whatever happens in 2024, I believe I'll come back to this tweet and quote it with a testimony by Jan 2025. In the meantime, indulge me with your followership. Stick around to see the valuable content I put out daily (I can be really playful sometimes too). 😌
A part of the decking had collapsed. Pieces of heavy concrete scattered on my bed and the tiles.
If I had been inside, that shi would have landed right on me.
My laptop was on the bed too, because I plugged it in when NEPA flashed their light.
Fortunately, it wasn't hit.
I quickly called my landlord to come see what just happened. Thank God he lived in the compound with us.
He assured me that the damage would be fixed tomorrow and that I could go back in to sleep.
His wife came down too, helped in cleaning the room, and afterwards, we prayed.
Now that I've read almost all the related tweets, let me digress into what concerns me the most.
I'm searching for a man with whom I can delve into a meaningful relationship.
He should be unbelievably liquid, but not necessarily be a legal luminary.
That will be all for now!

6. Adetoun - Royalty (a crown) is a thing of pride
7. Iteoluwakiisi - God's throne cannot be uprooted
8. Boluwatise - As God has done it
9. Iṣeunife - Love is doing (action over words)
10. Moṣeiyebiye - I did something priceless (precious)
PS: Let me know if I got them all!
I've wanted to leave here since March. If for nothing else but the bad electricity. More like worxt (not even worst).
I've been making enquiries about areas with good light.
Yaba. Surulere. Iju Ishaga. Ikeja. Arepo.
They said.
My enquiries have taken me even to Magboro...
No single page in it has been signed as I've not stepped a foot outside the shores of my country. Heck! I've not even taken a flight within the country, to start with. But I see these things happening in 2024, which is the only full year I have left before the passport expires.
I wrote "Dear Ekemini" in December 2020. It took 3 years of re-writing and re-submitting before it finally found a home. I'm super grateful and excited that I won't only be reading my story online but also holding it in my hands and feeling the pages. A delightful experience tbh.
I'm keeping an open mind and trusting God, because I know I can get a nice room selfcon with my budget and in area that has good light, especially on the Mainland.
But with what has happened tonight, I'm not sure I want to wait till Sept (when my rent will be due) to move out.
Not much
- moved to Lagos in Jan. & got my personal space in April
- got my first freelance client of the year last month
- got into

- joined Isele Magazine as an Editorial Intern
- attended

...and Ikorodu. I didn't mind so far they say they have good light.
One Yaba Agent told me to be looking for 700k yearly rent for a room selfcon when my budget is 500k total package. "Dey play"
A friend who'd just recently gotten an apartment in Surulere told me the same. 😅
Me and 9 of my writer friends, gathered around in a circle, in an outdoor setting like JJT Park, taking turns to read our published essays, stories, or poems, then plunging into a rich discussion after the reading.
Who wants in?
A writer just asked me "Which one is Medium?" when I told her she could publish articles on it and share her profile as a portfolio link.
Now, I'm not even laughing at her. I took great care to explain and help her understand how to get started.
Life-long learning is something!

The irony, however, is that I've travelled to many places (in my head) through the stories I've written. Once, to Europe via Lybia on a dinghy right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. In another story, I went to Mali to investigate a rape case perpetrated by 2 students.
Though my hopes of getting an international scholarship to further my studies didn't quite work out, the last three years have been really mind-shifting for me. I may not have an MSc in Immunology/Biotechnology today, but I have a degree in writing 🤭, and that too, is something.
Unlike most Nigerian graduates today, NYSC allawee was my first source of income. I neither ventured into any business as an undergraduate nor did I learn a technical skill. No regrets, only lessons to run with.
Interestingly, before I started earning any income at all, I had mapped out what kind of relationship I'd love to have with money, thanks to Arese Ugwu's "Smart Money Woman" which I read in September 2018.
This is my first serious brand strategy-inclined tweet and I'm open to as many discussions as this thread would bring.
Let's talk about Brand Essence or the Big Idea of a brand.
Case studies: Durex and Gold Circle 🤓

My passport is still breathing in the pink nylon I carefully wrapped it in, safely tucked away in the pocket compartment of my Ecolacs bag. Everyday, I'm reminded that this pricey document would expire in Jan 2025, yet, I've not had any need to use it to travel out. 😂
I had had it all planned out the previous year and had been saving 3k every month from my NYSC allawee, just to make sure I got the passport before leaving the State. (You know why, right?)

With my transcript & international passport, I applied aggressively for scholarships. Some of my graduate applications came back positive, (I even got 4 admissions from 4 different UK universities) but none of my scholarship applications met the mark. Tough times, I tell you. 😩
As the year progressed and the what-next-after-nysc virus spread like wildfire, I had to find something else to do while still applying here and there. It's been 3yrs now, and I've gone from 2 full-time jobs (teaching and writing respectively) into freelancing and brand strategy.
And so, when my first allowance came in in June 2019, I already knew how to allocate my funds and what amount was going to enter each account. Never mind that the allawee was

Everyone knows me as a great writer today, because someone invested in my growth years back.

Writers are putting more than a decade of research into writing brilliant books you'd read in only a few days.
Chale, put some respect to that name.
Or if e easy, do ham. 🤗
One lesson I learned earlier that has only made sense to me recently?
Well, it is to not go to school to just read and pass. Start learning things school won't teach you, right there, while you're still in school.
The earlier, the better. 🤗

I got my first ghostwriting gig in October this year. Started the writing on Nov. 1st. Finished it on Dec. 15th. Delivered on all tasks as and when due, while taking my client along every step of the way.
What made everything seamless?

So on January 25, 2020, a day after my mom's birthday, I left my PPA (Badariya) and went to the Immigration Office (Gwadan Gaji) to get my international passport. Shout out to
@_lpraiz
who stood in as my referee and had nothing but encouragements to offer all through ✊
And then, a big miracle happened in 2020. You'll ask me what. 😎 NYSC increased corper allawee from 19,800 to 33k. Good times fr fr, but I had only 4 months to go as a corper. "Time to act fast, Winnie" I told myself.
By November, I took some money from my "education" account and processed my transcript. Then I continued saving again because I still had one more document to get: the international passport.
Well, I saved 3k monthly from my allawee and kept it in an account I tagged "education" to process documents like my transcript and of course my international passport. You see, I wanted to pursue a second degree outside the country at the time.
10 Yorùbá surnames I have heard and loved:
1. Durokifa - Wait and eulogize Ifa
2. Ikudeyin - Death, get thee behind me
3. Ehinmoro - I thought of the past
4. Towobola - Put your hand inside wealth
5. Erinfolami - Elephant shakes with wealth
Again, I have about 3 works I've been recycling since 2020 that MUST find a home this year.
So, if you're;
1. A writer
2. With 1 or 2 of such kinds of works
3. Willing to workshop your piece(s) with me
Kindly indicate!
PS: We'll critique each other's work, leave comments, etc

Yoo! This essay finally found a home.

Since I've been talking names lately, my mind just couldn't help but to ruminate on the idea of analysing the etymology of Yorùbá names side-by-side with brand naming (as a concept).
Walk with me. 👭👫
In October 2020, while Nigeria was celebrating 60years independence, I was wondering how corruption had eaten deep into the fabric of our existence and left us rotten. In my quest to find who spoilt Nigeria, I settled at my desk and wrote.
Today, "Who Spoilt Nigeria" is up here
"I don't like the way you walk."
"Your forehead is too large."
"Ah! You talk too fast."
Oga, park well. Somebody else will like me that way.
Bye-bye!

I finally published this essay about my surname: Odunoku; its meaning and what it means to me.
My own Odunoku is from Ododeyo. I hear some Odunokus are from Ikorodu. I'm dying to meet one.
Like? Retweet? Tag your Ijebu friends?
Please! Indulge me!!
1 story down. 9 more to go.
I wrote this from the POV of a black bra, and I seriously can't contain my laughter.
Power to me abeg. ✊

I remember saying I was going to publish a literary book next year.
I just feel that I have the skills and grit to pull it off, but I've been contemplating about it so much.
And now that the
#40DaysOfFullGrowth
challenge is pushing me to dedicate 10 days on a mini project,
🧵
Behold...
My second read of the year: "Ògbójú Ọdẹ Nínú Igbó Irúnmalẹ̀" by D.O Fagunwa
A reread actually, and it's helping me buffer my brain's activities, in addition to revelling in the sweet language that is Yorùbá 😅 😍
