The consensus on this album seems to have been: classic Premier production, weak lyrics and rapping.
I don't buy it.
Are the rhymes "hip-hop quotables"? No. Would Guru have handled these beats better? Unquestionably.
But I love this album the way it is. It's a gem.

Friday evening hip-hop soundtrack is 1992's Blue Funk from the late, great Heavy D (and The Boyz). This is so good but rarely talked about. If you haven't heard it, do. Side note: it has a super early appearance from Biggie. It's all awesome.

Warren G's Regulate... G Funk Era is sequenced perfectly. When that happens you can't imagine the tracks in any other order than they are. Every song and skit here flows into the next flawlessly.

Picked up these old copies of Hip-Hop Connection off eBay because the Q&As with Rakim and Nas were just amazing. I was obsessed with this magazine as a kid, read every page over and over each month, and wish I still had them all. Looking forward to recapturing my youth!

In 1993, aged 14, I went into UK record stores over and over and over again asking if they had a release date for Doggystyle. Could barely believe it when I heard What's My Name on the radio and then finally got my hands on the album. Snoop was bigger than anything I'd known.

Lego Millennium Falcon finished. We will never again speak of the moment, four bags of bricks and 110 pages of instructions in, when we realised one piece had been placed incorrectly and whole sections would need to be undone to rectify it before we could move on.

Finally finished Dilla Time. Such a powerful, beautiful biography - and more. A friend asked me if I thought he'd enjoy the book even if he wasn't a big fan of Dilla. I told him yes - I can't imagine reading this and not wanting to discover or rediscover the man's music.
