Don't blame "open source libraries" for an incident. Personal opinion: those who use open source software to build production systems must take responsibility for validating their fitness for the task at hand. One can hire an expert if one doesn't have the skills to do this.

we had a significant issue in ChatGPT due to a bug in an open source library, for which a fix has now been released and we have just finished validating. a small percentage of users were able to see the titles of other users’ conversation history. we feel awful about this.

@ke4qqq @_msw_ I'm inclined to say this one would be found fairly quickly anyway because a few hundred ms extra latency on ssh connections is going to blow up some monitoring. If the payload had been just a tiny bit smarter it could have avoided that and stayed hidden for much longer.

Your regular reminder that @downdetector relies on end user reports, both direct and via social media. When you have many Internet properties that show trouble, it doesn't mean "the cloud is down." It often means there's an ISP, transit, or CDN issue.

And the maintainer made the change *anyway* without giving any credit or mentioning the PR that didn't get merged, giving a "thank you" or anything. 😑 This isn't the maintainer's fault. I think that CLAs are bad policy and put maintainers in a bad spot.

There is extraordinary effort involved in quietly making large scale products and services better, more reliable, more consistent in their performance. Customers notice, and I think appreciate this, even if there isn't a big launch event that has everyone cheering.

I worked at the FSF for 3 years and volunteered for over 6 years β€” that ended in 2004. I witnessed misogyny, sexual objectification, and abuse carried out by RMS. I banded together with my coworkers, formed a union, negotiated a contract, and was elected shop steward.

Wondering why that network or compiler runtime library isn't found? libtree is like ldd, but it tells you why libraries were found (or not): RPATH, RUNPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, .conf, etc. Also, fancy colors. Try it! c/o @stabbbles

Right now I can't tell if there's a significant vulnerability in a common open source software library, or if the developers at OpenAI were using a library wrong. PSA: if you have a security incident and open source software is a factor, please practice coordinated disclosure.
