‘The Shallow Tale Of A Writer Who Decided To Write About A Serial Killer’ Review – This New Comedy Of Errors Never Lives Up To Its Inspired Premise, writes

PAST LIVES is cinematic perfection. Takes a familiar romantic narrative and subverts it in a quietly poignant but decisively modern way. Evokes more truth in one line than most movies do in 120+ minutes. Easily one of the best movies of the year.
Nia DaCosta gets away with more crazy shit in THE MARVELS than Raimi did in MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. The most fun I’ve had with a Marvel film in ages and the only solid argument I’ve seen in the last few years that the MCU deserves to continue.

is absolutely hilarious and a total delight. Billy Eichner makes for an incredibly strong lead in several long-take monologues that stunned me. Hits all the right notes and doesn’t shy away from the realities of gay hookup culture. So pleasantly surprised.
@nicoleackman16
THATS WHAT I THOUGHT
Just in general, why pair a short film director with a feature film director?? Two films that are so deeply aesthetically and thematically different????? I’m so confused lol
In rewatching TOY STORY 2, it's quite hilarious that Pixar straight up made their own proto-LIGHTYEAR and it looks, feels, and sounds 10x closer to what a Buzz Lightyear movie would actually feel like.
I am astonished by BONES AND ALL, the most buck-wild genre blend you’ll see this year. Pushes its horror and romance tenets to their extremes and finds an audaciously beautiful harmony between them. I might have cried.

The scene in KNIVES OUT where Harlan describes Ransom as being so arrogant that he "can't tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife" is maybe one of the smoothest pieces of foreshadowing I have ever seen in a movie.
Guys, the movie was never gonna make its money back, even on a good day. It’s a three hour, R-rated movie about old Hollywood lol. They made this as a prestige picture. The real success this movie will achieve is if it can win some awards come high time.
TED LASSO out here making some of the dumbest storytelling decisions on TV right now. Hard to imagine we went from the heights of Season 2 to the absolute lows of Season 3. Kinda just waiting for the show to stall out and end.
DICKS: THE MUSICAL is fucking brilliant. It’s not only gut-bustingly hilarious, but it’s genuinely a fantastic musical. A+, no notes, fuck yes.
#TIFF23
BROKER is easily one of my favorite films of the festival. Another masterwork by Kore-eda with a phenomenal ensemble cast and a charming, comforting tone throughout. Certain scenes had me in tears. Thoroughly recommended!!
#TIFF22
Really enjoyed TÁR, patiently and meticulously crafted by Todd Field with another great performance from Blanchett. Will certainly need to see it again as it has so much lying underneath the surface, but I was engaged from the very first frame to the very last.
@TheNYFF
#NYFF60
The film is also further proof that Iman Vellani is the new lifeblood of the MCU. The film leaves her in a place that suggests she has a bright future in the larger storyline and that makes me very, very excited.

There’s no way they went into this thinking the movie would make its money back, especially with the release strategy. They did this as a prestige/awards picture and I think it should be judged as that come awards time.
PRISCILLA is another Coppola banger. The way she effortlessly captures loss of innocence will never not astound me. Spaeny and Elordi are pitch-perfect as is the excellent soundtrack.

@ZoeRoseBryant
Genuinely incredible scene. His and Ali Wong's performance toward the end of the series just ripped right through me. I pray they become part of the Emmys conversation.
Y’all, BOTTOMS is fucking IT. Seligman and Sennott are the moment. This is the next great high school comedy but updated for a modern audience. Hilarious, irreverent, violent, gay, 2000’s as hell but completely on the pulse. An early fave of the fest.

BLACKBERRY is a total slam dunk from director Matt Johnson, a frenetic and hilarious look at the rise and fall of the titular company. If you threw SOCIAL NETWORK, THE OFFICE, and WOLF OF WALL STREET into a blender, you’d get this—primed to be one of the best of the year.

Let’s not act like Sony business heads can take credit for that.
Baumbach says Elfman was “alive with ideas all the time” when creating the score for

Baumbach set up shop at Elfman’s studio and cut the film while Elfman composed in the next room. The score influenced the edit and the edit influenced the score.

In light of HELL OF A SUMMER World Premiering at
#TIFF23
, I wanna signal boost this interview I did with Billy Bryk for
@GeekVibesNation
where we spoke about his experience co-directing the film with his best friend, Finn Wolfhard.
THE PEASANTS is utterly spellbinding. One of the greatest achievements in animation I have ever seen. A massive step up from LOVING VINCENT in just about every way and a wholly engrossing, epic story in its own right. If this isn’t in your
#TIFF23
lineup, amend that pronto.
Great, insightful analysis on a show that genuinely feels like a cultural moment happening before our eyes. Deeply important and thoroughly recommended viewing.
THE PEOPLE’S JOKER is an absolute revelation, a retcon of the Batman mythos as a trans coming-of-age story. Wildly hilarious, completely homemade, and radically transgressive. It’s the movie DC doesn’t want you to see, which is exactly why you NEED to see it.

HBO is developing a comedy series ‘THE FRANCHISE’ about making a superhero film.
The pilot is directed by Sam Mendes with Armando Iannucci set to exec produce & co-write.
The series follows a crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, joyous hellscape of superhero movie-making.
BLOODY HELL features a strong performance from Maddie Ziegler as a girl diagnosed with a rare reproductive disorder who learns to embrace her body. Molly McGlynn’s deeply personal story is raw, enlightening, and hilariously told. Happy to see this representation on screen!

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing fellow East Brunswick native Jesse Eisenberg (!!!) on his directorial debut, in select theaters this weekend. We mapped his artistic journey, beginning in Jersey, and how it inspired his directing process. A dream interview for me.
People really out here blaming Margot Robbie for BABYLON's fall? Star power means nothing. If Will Smith, The Rock, or Christian Bale can't sell movies in 2022, nobody can.
THE KILLER will forever be my personal Closing Night of
#NYFF61
. I couldn't have asked for a better finale to my festival experience. This is Fincher at his most simple but effective: hilarious, exacting, intense, stylish, and entertaining as hell. Cannot wait to rewatch.
DREAM SCENARIO is one of my favorite films of the year. It’s a brilliant story brought to its most conceptually logical yet comedically absurd lengths, anchored by arguably Nicolas Cage’s greatest tragicomic performance to date. Make this one a priority.
#PFF31
Pixar is releasing a new short film ‘DUG DAYS: CARL’S DATE’ on February 10 which follows Carl as he prepares for his first date since Ellie’s death.
See what else is coming soon to Disney+:
Was not expecting PERFECT DAYS to resonate with me as much as it did. Such a quiet dignity in this one, humanity for the humblest of people and hope amidst life’s cruel realities. Koji Yakusho speaks volumes with so few words. My favorite Wenders.
#PFF32
This is such an important video. Big props to Scott for sticking all of it out and taking time for himself and moving into his new independence with a head held high. He never misses!!
new video.
I binged A Pup Named Scooby-Doo multiple times over the past few weeks because I'm incredibly depressed.
so I wanted to make a video talking about comfort shows, and more specifically, why Pup is mine.

TÁR (dir. Todd Field, 2022)
The charisma and emotional precision of Cate Blanchett are put to astounding use in this deft showcase for the actor’s nearly musical artistry, a stinging portrait of a world-famous orchestra conductor’s gradual unraveling.

Hi, this is me talking to John Magaro (!!!!!!!) about how his performance in
@pastlivesmovie
marks a first for his career in its sheer honesty and vulnerability.
The film expands nationwide this weekend. If you see one movie this year, make it this one.
@A24
Astounded by how much I loved
@TootsieMusical
. Tony Yazbek’s music is electric. Robert Horn’s book is a comedic gold mine. The entire cast is gangbusters. I haven’t had this much fun in a musical this good in a very long time. Please see this show.
@metaplexmovies
I agree with this to an extent. Their ages and how that translates to maturity/immaturity is definitely at play, but the ending implies that it's ultimately okay because the love they have for each other overcomes their ages. To me that's a hard pill to swallow.
#GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol3
is another hilarious, earnest romp from Gunn, but also the sloppiest, most indulgent, and most dramatically inert film of the entire trilogy. I’m still struggling to wrap my head around a lot of its dramatic choices. Good, not great.
Just watched the first two episodes of
@SwarmOnPrime
and, so far—no spoilers—it’s remarkable. Glover and Nabers take a simple idea and take it to surprising, hilarious, brutal places. Massive props to them for shooting on film as well. Keep this series on your radar.

Finally caught up on NAVALNY and man, what a fantastic doc. Absolutely unreal levels of access wrapped up in a thrilling, observant, and surprisingly hilarious package. So far, my fave of the five noms (only have SPLINTERS left).

powerfully adapts the show's stunning music and emotional story to the screen. The music video-y direction leaves something to be desired, but the entire cast is excellent, especially supporting turns from Henson and Brooks. Fatima Robinson's choreo is STUNNING.

is an entertaining but empty fantasy romp. Gotta give credit for thoroughly well-realizing the world of D&D on screen, but the story itself didn’t do much for me. Still, there’s plenty to like otherwise, and D&D players are going to have a blast.

Has anyone ever just went onto Netflix, looked at all the shows and movies you maybe kinda wanna watch but then don't wanna commit and just watch THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE for the 4,000th time?
No? Just me? Got it.
HELL OF A SUMMER is a bit underbaked (and a bit light for a midnight selection), but it’s hilariously funny and the ensemble is fantastic. Shout-out to the killer HALLOWEEN-inspired score by Jay McCarrol!
#TIFF23
ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET. is one of the best films of the year. I'm still giddy thinking about how amazing it is that this film exists in this form for this audience. Colorful, emotional, hilarious, earnest, all without egregious fanfare. More movies like this PLEASE.
On yet another watch, SWISS ARMY MAN is an absolute masterpiece. So incredible to experience the film with a great crowd and hear a Q&A afterward with Daniels, Wang, AND Dano.
Proud to say that I am now a part of the

EXCLUSIVE: Following his

win for ‘Pinocchio,’ Guillermo del Toro is getting closer to finding his next live-action film as sources tell Deadline Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are in early talks to star in ‘Frankenstein’ movie at Netflix
Man, y’all are ALSO underselling THE DEAD DON’T HURT. Great western and an even greater love story, gorgeously directed (and SCORED, my god) by Viggo Mortensen.

Scored an interview for a part-time position (*third* round of the application process) and cannot remember the last time I came this close to getting a position I feel this excited/passionate about. Wish me all of the luck!!!!
Glenn Howerton comes out as the MVP, transcendently brash and endlessly compelling as co-CEO Jim Ballsillie. Not to make too obvious of a comparison, but he is in full ALWAYS SUNNY mode. Fans of the show should seek this one out.

Lessons learned from the box office these last few weeks:
- Beloved auteurs sell tickets
- Sequels and legacy franchises no longer attract audiences the way they used to
- Counterprogramming can benefit the industry immensely if treated like

GREEN BORDER is my favorite film of
#NYFF61
so far. Was skeptical of the ensemble narrative approach but Holland’s bold, rousing filmmaking won me over. Even has a few expert moments of levity to it. Add this to the list of films I won’t be shutting up about anytime soon.
I, TONYA is one of the year's best. Margot Robbie and Sebastian Stan at the height of their careers. Alison Janney is pure comedic gold. Excellent direction from Craig Gillespie; smart cinematography, perfect soundtrack, excellent editing, and perfect pacing. See this one.
@awards_watch
I absolutely believe it could happen and it deeply worries me.
Popularity of certain people/projects has left bets off the table over the last few years.
On and off Twitter atm, but needed to boost this excellent and bitting editorial from
