Disappointed that on this
#InternationalWomensDay
Surrey’s Police and Crime Panel have found my tweet in support of a
@jk_rowling
post about women who have been raped by ‘women’ with a penis, not to be ‘dignified or respectful’ and to explain myself to the 3 men who complained
This is a male, interviewing another male, about why they should be included in ‘fellow female’ sports categories. If we don’t challenge this gaslighting then we have no right to call ourselves feminists, no right to expect our sex-based rights to be protected.
In an exclusive interview with
@itvnews
, transgender cyclist Emily Bridges tells
@stevescott_itv
she had 'physical threats' made against her after Prime Minister
@BorisJohnson
voiced his opinion on the place of trans women in sport
I am, and remain, absolutely determined to stand up for women in Surrey and beyond.
I also support the right of trans men and women to live how they choose.
But I will not stand by while women’s voices are silenced or we are told that our rights are subservient to any male
@jo_bartosch
@_Lisa_Townsend
"Blunt had submitted a complaint about her tweet to the PCP. In a lengthy formal letter, Blunt complained bitterly that his attempts to “counsel” Townsend had been rebuffed and that “she remains absolutely determined to take part in this most contentious of public debates”."
I don’t think our politicians have the slightest idea how much anger is building among women from all walks of life at the attempts to threaten and intimidate them out of speaking publicly about their own rights, their own bodies and their own lives. 1/3
Men determined to commit sexual and violent crimes are some of the most manipulative criminals in society. They will stop at nothing, including taking advantage of self ID and a culture that prioritises an ‘I am who I say I am’ ideology over women.
Women in custody may be vulnerable, have experienced trauma or have mental health issues. No one should be intimately searched by the opposite sex against their will. Basic dignity is vital in a civilised society and should be at the heart of policing
I honestly believe that when we look back, in the months and years to come, that the beginning of 2023 is where we’ll point to as when people woke up to the dangers of self-ID, men in women’s spaces and not protecting our children. So proud of all the warriors 💜🤍💚
If you can’t properly define those who may be in need of an abortion then please don’t come with your crocodile tears when women’s rights are under threat.
Abortion. Contraception. Same-sex marriage. All are under dire threat.
The global anti-gender movement is a very real risk to the hard-fought rights of women and LGBTQ+ people.
We need to stand together to fight these attacks on our lives.
#RoeVsWade
It’s not a ‘niche’ issue, it’s not ‘hysterical’ of women to be taking to the streets about it. We will not accept this gaslighting from men who keep telling us they are women, or from those who enable them.
#IStandWithJKRowling
Putting aside the insulting way you’ve described the respected journalist and author, she’s a woman, who knows the difference between male and female and speaks (as many of us do) about our experiences as women. She doesn’t require your approval, or that of any male, to do so.
So your changing rooms are mixed-sex, is what you’re saying. At least be honest about it so that we know and can make an informed decision before we take our clothes off in a space where predatory males will presumably be allowed in because, hey, inclusivity…
@b_biffa
While they are mainly used by customers of that gender, as an inclusive retailer and in line with most other retailers, we allow customers the choice of fitting room. Thanks 2/2
Violence against women and girls isn’t gender neutral, and the response shouldn’t be either. Women need safe spaces that are for women, by women - if anyone should know, it’s Charlotte

For those asking - Surrey Police and Crime Panel is made up of Surrey councillors. It has nothing to do with
@SurreyPolice
The Panel were responding to a complaint made by Surrey MP Crispin Blunt and two other men about my tweet.
Thank you to everyone who has been in touch in the last 24hrs. As Surrey PCC and chair of the Surrey Criminal Justice Board I know how difficult it is to secure a conviction for sexual crimes, and share the deep concerns about recent comments that have sought to undermine 1/3
This is proper, grown-up, and evidence-based policy-making.
The reaction that it’s ‘violence’ and ‘genocide’ would be laughable if it weren’t for the fact there is real violence and genocide happening in parts of the world where being a woman actually gets you killed.
In what world do people think it’s ok - necessary, even - to compel us to have more regard for ‘preferred pronouns’ and ignore reality, than to call this what it is: a sick and dangerous male
Woman jailed after admitting cocaine-fuelled sex with a dog
Many, many women were in touch with me during the PCC elections in May to ask about this and I have since spoken to women who previously had only voted Labour or Lib Dem, but who voted for me. They feel politically homeless. Women won’t put up with being ignored, or ‘re-educated’
I’m regularly stopped in the street in Scotland & London by women & men who say they agree with my stance on
#womensrights
& abhor the abuse I & others receive. Politicians who don’t think this is starting to cut through with the voters are kidding themselves
It is vital that victims and survivors of sexual crimes in Surrey know that my office and I will always strive to ensure they are supported and treated with respect, and that I do not consider any crime against a young person as ‘minor’. 3/3
'What is sinister, is when people tried to shut down the debate and that's exactly what these men were trying to do'
Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend tells
@andrewdoyle_com
how she was reprimanded for sharing a tweet by JK Rowling in support of women’s rights.
If any other body was paid this amount of tax-payer money to offer one-sided ‘advice’ under the guise of equality there would be cries from opposition politicians for an inquiry.
Billy, you’re on the side of men who want the right to walk into any female space - refuge, toilet, prison, changing room. Does that not trouble you? p.s. I’m a Tory and stand with my Labour, Green and LD sisters who are also fighting men like you.
Putin's reference to JK Rowling being cancelled challenges those 'gender critical' feminists who claim to be arguing from a left wing perspective. Does it not trouble you when you see who is amplifying your signal?
I hope that all organisations using Stonewall to inform their HR policies are reading this judgement. It couldn’t be clearer: discriminating against women like us due to our gender critical beliefs will cost you money and your reputation. We’re watching.
#AllisonBaileyWins
1/The Employment Tribunal found that Garden Court Chambers discriminated against me because of my gender critical belief when it published a statement that I was under investigation & in upholding Stonewall’s complaint against me.
#AllisonBaileyWins
yesterday’s jury decision in a case that will have taken enormous bravery from the victim. As Surrey’s victims’ champion I want to make clear that the comments issued by a Surrey MP yesterday in no way reflect the views of my Party, or my colleagues 2/3
I will take all the complaints, the insults, the threats, the ‘demands’ to shut up and be a good girl, the accusations of ‘hurt feelings’ and entreaties to just ‘be kind’. The ‘you’re making it difficult for the rest of us’ and ‘you’ve had your say’. I will stop when this does 👇🏻
That’s exactly what we’re saying, Noah, I’m pleased you’ve understood. But it’s not ‘transphobic’ to believe there’s no justification for males in our prisons, changing rooms and refuges. Even Nicola got that, eventually…
Let's make this really simple and clear:
If you claim, as JK Rowling does, that trans women should not be in spaces designated for women, you are saying that trans women are not really women
That is transphobic
We shouldn't support people who are transphobic
The end
Thank you
@AJRichardsonMP
and all the great men and women who have contacted me in support. And thanks also to the fabulous
@jo_bartosch
who once again makes the case so eloquently
Thank you to the excellent Rebecca Hardy for talking to me earlier this week, and to the
@MailOnline

It’s a good question but I honestly don’t believe the answer is a difficult one. There is one major, well-funded organisation which has managed to work its way into forces keen to ‘be kind’. Well done to
@andrewdoyle_com
for his continued work on this
'We need to ask questions about why the Police think this. Why are they doing this and who has been training them?'
Debbie Hayton and Emma Webb discuss Sussex Police apologising after telling people to not make hateful comments about a sex offender's gender identity.
Very well said Rosie. It is wrong that in 2021 we are still fighting for all these things, for ourselves and all women and girls. The denial of our right to our own spaces is misogyny, pure as it comes
Should not have to rename our bodies or ourselves accordingly. We have fought forever for our own names, our own spaces, to own our own bodies, our rights and our votes. As have all gay people too.
If my views of feminism, women's rights and women's basic physical safety...
You can disagree with my view that there is a conflict between trans rights and women’s sex-based rights (such as in domestic abuse refuges) but blocking a respected journalist who knows her stuff because she dared to speak to me doesn’t help any group involved in this debate
On Sunday a piece I wrote about
@stonewalluk
was published in a national paper.
Part of my job as a journalist is to help hold orgs to account. In response Stonewall blocked me.
I'm a bi woman in a civil partnership with lesbian-aren't Stonewall supposed to represent ppl like me?
Not an easy decision given the current climate, but absolutely the right one. I know SCC and its councillors are committed to diversity and inclusion - and respect ALL the protected characteristics.
*Breaking*
I'm hearing tonight that Surrey County Council are officially withdrawing from Stonewall. Not just waiting for membership to lapse - actually leaving according to a public Q&A by SCC leader Tim Oliver.
The wall is coming down people
It’s impossible to overstate what great news this is. A whole generation of girls growing up who will hopefully never have to endure treatment for
#cervicalcancer
which is invasive, painful and required (in my case) a long recovery period. Well done to all who made it happen
Congratulations to
@_Lisa_Townsend
on your re-election as Surrey PCC and thank you for your unambiguous commitment to standing up for the rights of women and girls. 💚🤍💜

I believe that one day we’ll look back and wonder how it was ever ok to prescribe these drugs to children, and I am sorry that for too many this comes too late.
“…to tell women that not accepting biological males in their spaces puts trans people at risk is outrageous gaslighting: women are far more likely than trans women to be killed by male violence…but such facts have suddenly become very unfashionable…” 👏🏻
@HadleyFreeman
The ‘fourth wave’ that gave us
#MeToo
has come crashing down amid sloganeering and rows over gender identity. Where do women go from here? | ✍️
@HadleyFreeman
This has popped up on my notifications a few times this week - the interview is 2 years old now and what’s changed - for the better - is that my views are no longer considered ‘brave’. Thank you to every woman and man who supported me then and still supports women now
I don’t think our politicians have the slightest idea how much anger is building among women from all walks of life at the attempts to threaten and intimidate them out of speaking publicly about their own rights, their own bodies and their own lives. 1/3
@sullydish
@bindelj
@MattWalshBlog
Absolutely Andrew. I say this as an elected Conservative - this has nothing to do with left v right. It’s those who care about children and women and our LGB communities v those who care only about men’s rights (or ‘being kind’ as it’s now known)
I want to ensure that women are safe and just as importantly feel safe in Surrey and beyond. While this to me and many women will feel long overdue, I think this is an important step in the right direction

This is a truly outrageous decision 👇
Senior officers can’t on the one hand say they are committed to eradicating VAWG and on the other be seen to condone this. There IS a clash of rights and women are not going to accept that we are the ones who lose out
#RespectMySex
Any woman strip searched by a trans police officer will have our full support in getting that officer and Chief Constable prosecuted for sexual assault.
@CollegeofPolice
I am aware of this and raised it with the Force some time ago. We now have a new Chief Constable with an attitude far more aligned with the law so I hope this is an oversight and I will raise again. Thank you
@WRN_Surrey
for your work and for highlighting

In their "Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy",
@SurreyPolice
state that the protected characteristic of "gender reassignment" (Equality Act 2010) is an "outdated term". Their preferred terminology is "gender identity".
@_Lisa_Townsend
It’s felt like a battle at times over the last year or so, but receiving this letter yesterday from
@SuellaBraverman
gives me real hope - not just for women and children but for all our residents who deserve police forces focused on cutting crime and protecting the vulnerable
Victims of sexual violence are deeply traumatised and vulnerable when interviewed by police. Surely they deserve absolute clarification in the Victims’ Code on their rights and choice as to the sex of who interviews them?
@MoJGovUK
@Pepperc85059416
@adhib
@Conviction19c
@ForWomenScot
It is not and never has been transphobic to suggest that women need and deserve our own spaces. My belief that’s trans women are trans women, and are not female, is not transphobic, and it’s a protected belief for very good reason given the hatred and bile we face for saying so
Leaving the office last night with two colleagues, I found myself saying “are we leaving all the lights on?!”. This whole time, I’ve thought I was turning into my mother and so completely missed the now unavoidable truth: I have turned into my father
Thank you Marc. We must continue to support everyone, but in a way that is appropriate and sensitive to all and that will often mean female only spaces
A very important piece here from
@_Lisa_Townsend
my PCC colleague from Surrey. Some services quite simply can’t function in a gender neutral way and we mustn’t put women and girls at risk by trying to make them.
Trans activists are anti-feminist. They continue to dehumanise and erase women.
Only women get pregnant. Only women give birth.
A pregnant man emoji is ridiculous.
Renaming breast milk to "human milk" is gross.
Is calling women "menstruators" not offensive?
Let women be women.
This, Cambridge Dictionary, is why we will fight to protect the word ‘woman’. Disappointed
@MailOnline
couldn’t manage to use ‘trans woman’ in their reporting - male crimes are not our crimes
It was a pleasure to be in a room that was filled with love, acceptance and courage! Thank you for having me and for allowing me to speak about my fight for the safety of women and girls everywhere
Most in policing understand why impartiality has to be at the core of all they do. But I have also seen, up close, police leaders who believe that it is acceptable to make political statements believing they are on ‘the right side of history’. Enough. Thank you
@SuellaBraverman
The vast majority of police officers work incredibly hard for the British people.
But police getting involved in politically contentious matters is shaking public confidence.
I've written to policing leaders to remind them of the importance of remaining impartial 1/2
Well said Angela. As a Conservative, I want to see us facing a strong, credible opposition - it’s how we all raise our game. But both Starmer and Rayner have today shown why Labour are a long way off being that opposition.
@andrew_b72
@LewisDavidJ
You mean my official capacity as an elected representative, speaking up for my constituents? Who overwhelmingly tell me they want to see female spaces protected.

@ProfRWinston
was VC of SH when I received my degree, and I remember being slightly star-struck back then, shaking this incredible man’s hand as he handed me my degree and I’m even more in awe now. It is not transphobic to acknowledge science
"I'm about to say something that will mean you will probably want to edit the programme...you cannot change your sex"
This basic scientific fact has now become so taboo that the BBC think it's necessary to provide 'balance'. They wouldn't do this for flat-earthers
Many of you, understandably, don’t want to read the article. So I will add that ‘she’ was twice previously found guilty of possessing indecent images of children, both times receiving a suspended sentence.
‘Sex & Gender’ should be recorded - well done

a poignant piece 👇🏻 New Surrey Police Commissioner attacks Stonewall for promoting 'dangerous transgender ideology' | Daily Mail Online
At least they’ve finally picked a side. It’s just a shame they’ve decide to support some mens’ ideas of what a woman is, over actual women and our safety, rights and freedoms
The Labour Party will always be committed to building a society where the trans community feel safe and respected.
Labour will:
🏳️⚧️ Introduce tougher sentences for LGBT+ hate crime
🏳️⚧️ Ban conversion therapy in all forms
🏳️⚧️ Modernise the outdated Gender Recognition Act
Thank you and well done on this fantastic judgement. I hope that I and the thousands of others who have been recorded will now have this removed. The constant attempts to silence views are indeed ‘chilling’ in a democratic society. Merry Christmas all!
@C_Kneer
Charlotte, your support has meant the world to me, as did your letter supporting me to the Panel. You know more than any woman should how much this matters. x
Why is it so hard to just say that
Trans women are not women, but as people they are as valid as every other human
Some people are women, some people are men
Trans women are men who don’t want to be seen as men.
Their ‘validity’ as humans doesn’t rest on their gender
Trans women aren't same as other women but equally valid
Some people are women based on their chromosomal sex
Trans are women based on other biological markers & gender identity
Both types of women are victims of sexism, rape & violence
Fight the misogyny that harms them all
@No7Sammy
What’s your point? That you can intimidate these women by saying ‘I know where you live’ and have your ‘assorted details’? If you are resorting to threats to their safety then you’ve more than just lost the argument
I am delighted to have been selected to stand as the Conservative Candidate for Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner in the upcoming elections on May 6th, and look forward to working with residents, businesses and organisations across our county

I’m a huge supporter and advocate for the BBC, and to me, their willingness to support this podcast demonstrates their ability to reflect. Large, public sector organisations get stuff wrong. We all do. But not all are as willing to engage on this issue.
For those of you asking questions about the BBC’s impartiality after listening to our ‘Nolan Investigates : Stonewall’ podcast - remember this .
The BBC enabled, supported & published our investigation .
I spent this afternoon in the House of Lords talking to a wonderful group of Peers from all parties and none. This is not a political issue. Vote for who best represents your views. If ‘your’ party no longer has your interests as a woman at its heart, find one that does
Congratulations to

Brilliant,

and so true. This week I’ve been “an absolute disgrace to humanity” and a “nazi” for a Tweet that didn’t mention and wasn’t referring to transgender people because I dared to highlight dangers of self ID. We keep going!
This week’s column is about women and the thought police. When they can’t find an incriminating quote to damn you for, they’ll accuse you of Wrongthink
35 arrests made today by Surrey Police. Great work by our fantastic officers but they should be across the county keeping our roads safe, not having to deal with selfish protestors who have no regard for our police or Surrey’s safety

Nigel Farage is dangerously perpetuating a myth on shoplifting: there is not and has never been a £200 ‘limit’. Recently in Redhill police arrested and detained an individual for stealing £7.50 worth of goods. He went back to prison.
🧵: I have noticed a lot of (understandable) confusion around my role as a PCC in the last few days and so I thought it might be helpful to clarify.

Though I admit from experience, many are very intelligent and helpful on a vast range of subjects.
However I wish

was a bit clearer on whether her communications are as a PCC or independent woman.
Staggering how few feminist women dare speak out against transgender athletes destroying women's rights to sporting fairness & equality.
They've been cowed into silence by the woke trans bullies. Emmeline Pankhurst must be turning in her grave at such abject surrender.
There’s nothing like being told by a man what I can and can’t tweet about on a Friday night, from my personal account. Presumably this means Tom should only be concentrating on medical issues…
