I make transit construction timelines! 🚧 🚇 Transit Politics & Planning | Cities | 23 | Find me where the skies are clearer 🦋 https://t.co/Ib2QOJqVko

Thought I'd make a pinned thread of all my transit timelines for any newcomers and to just to keep it all in one place!. Folder with them in High Resolution: Toronto/TTC.
I made a TTC construction timeline! We're all familiar with those "evolution of the TTC map" videos, but I always wondered how long each project took, from construction starting to opening, instead of just a timeline of opening dates. Below will be a thread of takeaways:

Highway 407 is literally completely empty at 10pm. But we need to build another multi-billion dollar highway paralleling this corridor right? #Highway413

If this happens we have to resort tactical/guerilla urbanism. Repaint the bike lanes ourselves. Install the bollards back ourselves. If the government won't protect vulnerable road users, we as a community have to.
NEW: As first reported by Global News, the Ford government has begun the process of removing bike lanes from three Toronto streets: Yonge st., Bloor St., University Ave. #onpoli.

This is very simple to fix. Automatic bus lasers.
This is very simple to fix. Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR). It has existed for over 20 years. It is used to enforce the Congestion Charge in London, UK. It is used on the 407 in Ontario. Congestion in the core of the city is a new level of madness. The efficiency.

Why don’t we finish this project that ur government abandoned first buddy .
To every Ontario driver stuck in gridlock, I have a simple message: Help is on the way. While other governments refused to invest to get drivers out of traffic, our government is building the roads, highways and transit that will get Ontario moving, including by exploring a new

There are approximately 2,500 storeys proposed within a 700m radius of the Yonge and Steeles intersection. Existing strip malls and auto dealerships are set to be replaced by high-density development in one of the most dramatic urban transformations in all of #Toronto.

Transit users literally only want one thing and it’s fucking disgusting (ELKAY LZWSRK EZH2O Water Bottle Fillers at major stations). Even my Instagram ads know I want it
Managed to beat the @Metrolinx @GOtransit Bramalea Go vending machines this time around with my Waterloo water bottle. Still no water fountain in sight in the multi hundred million dollar Bramalea Go! . Way to go!

So excited to be able to buy a beer faster while I wait years to see a doctor or seek mental health care!.
BREAKING: The Ford government is spending $225 million to speed up the implementation of beer and wine in corner stores. After Sept 5, all convenience stores province-wide will be able to sell beer and wine. After Oct 31, all grocery stores will be able to opt-in. #ONpoli

YOU fetishize Eurocentric notions of “proper urban density” for “ordinary people” while dismissing billions of ordinary people across the world, especially in Asia live in towers and cities much more sustainable, energy and water efficient, than their European counterparts.
YIMBY people your arguments are embarrassing. You never ask who these homes are for or where, or how our cities are financialised + the repercussions. You fetishise skyscrapers but need to visit (Red) Vienna/Barcelona for how to do proper urban density for ordinary people. Sad!

I think that policy should not force people to live in towers right next to highways which create high particulate matter & noise pollution, increasing risk of asthma, stroke, and dementia, just so people in single family homes in transit & amenity rich areas avoid densification.
@_ChanFace Y’all will never be happy.

Planned density for an unfunded streetcar line vs planned density for an existing subway line of 50 years. “““Urban planning””” in action in Toronto
An updated look at development activity in Downtown #Toronto. Across the city, there are over 250,000+ residential units approved and an additional 430,000+ proposed. 🏗️. #Toronto #urbanplanning #transit

NEEED IN TORONTO 💳💥💳💥💳💳💥💥💥💥.
This is brilliant: #Dublin has “fare capping” on its public transport. When you buy a LEAP farecard, you get charged a max. of €5.60 a day, or €22 / wk, no matter how many rides you take on commuter rail/DART/trams/buses. Thnx to @cianginty .for pointing this out

Please help us and object to this outrageous scheme to build a 42-storey tower over a Grade II building in #Birmingham. It would set a terrible precedent for listed buildings within the city. See the plans: . 📷 : CGI image from Design & Access statement

This is absolutely insane. All that money gone paying for bike lane removals, and extra red tape, reviews, & studies could have gone to simply funding public transit operations––which would actually reduce congestion. Ford is so unserious about solving issues, just theatrics. 1/3.
NEW: As the Ford government reviews the installation of all bike lanes on city streets over the past five years, the province is offering to pay for the costs of removing existing lanes. #onpoli.

Toronto really said: what if we built a 15 minute city around a cloverleaf interchange
Nearly 19,000 residential units are planned surrounding the Don Mills and Eglinton intersection, and an additional 10,000+ further east of the Don Valley Parkway. The area will be serviced by the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT and Ontario Line subway. #Toronto #transit

The fact that some parts of the project are still NOT environmentally cleared??. CAHSR authority was established 1996 (~30 years ago) and construction started 2015 (~10 years ago) and we’re STILL waiting for “environmental clearance”?? . The system is broken.
We’ve environmentally cleared 422 of the project’s 494 miles!. By this summer, the Palmdale to Burbank section’s environmental document will be considered by our Board. If approved, we will have completely cleared the 463 miles from downtown SF to LA Union Station. #FactFriday

"It's a bizarre use of money, especially since the existing deal was expiring next year anyway. This isn’t fiscally prudent, and it’s not the best use of taxpayer money. There’s no serious argument that it is or could be." — @mattgurney #onpoli

Queen literally doing more than John Tory did in a decade. “We will roll out more improvements to the King Street Transit Priority Corridor this spring, including new signals and redesigned stops.”.
Today's City report is clear: traffic agents on King make traffic flow over 3 times faster at rush hour. That's 40 minutes transit riders can spend having fun — not staring out the streetcar window wondering why it's taking so long.

Read that while I was among dozens of students stranded waiting for more GO busses as they're all full & there is no two-way all day GO trains yet--a decade old promise. If Ford really cared about congestion he'd focus on funding transit operations & finishing rail projects. 1/7
Bike lanes belong on secondary streets, not clogging traffic on main roads. It’s time to get you moving again.

"bringing sanity back to bike lane decisions". What would be insanity is removing this sliver of bike lane on Bloor, a primary road, thinking it'll fix congestion. Maybe focus on funding the TTC so it doesn't fall into slow zone disrepair if you really want to solve congestion.
We are bringing sanity back to bike lane decisions. By removing and replacing existing bike lanes on primary roads, we will get drivers moving again.

….This is literally downtown Toronto at Queen and Sherbourne. WHERE IS THE HOUSING ON TOP.
A station entrance building is like the tip of an iceberg – it connects to a much larger structure below the surface. In this case, that’s of course a whole new underground subway station, which requires a lot of room to build. (2/5)

Why is Mexico getting more rail built than Canada 😭😭😭.
🇲🇽🚄 These are the train lines that Claudia Sheinbaum will construct by 2030. Following the ~1,500 km built by AMLO, Sheinbaum is aiming to surpass 3,000 km of new tracks. Mexico City will connect to Texas and Arizona, as well as to most major cities inside Mexico.

Absolutely crazy that Avenue Road is 6 lanes wide when the sidewalk with poles and parking meters can barely fit a wheelchair through. Especially if we’re going to be pushing more development and midrises on arterials, we need to make them walkable, pleasant, and safe.
Pls tell local councillors that you support proposed design changes to Avenue Rd (Bloor to St Clair).wider pedestrian areas .reduction from 6 to 4 lanes .bike lane (Bloor to Davenport) . safer intersections . councillor_saxe@toronto.ca councillor_matlow@toronto.ca

Massive Toronto transit news makes for a GREAT Friday! . After years of talking about it, we are seeing some BIG service improvements across the Toronto regional rail network! This is another huge step in turning GO from a commuter network to a regional rapid transit system!. 🧵
