We all hope for good writing, but a non-story is rarely saved by good writing… even if the writing world praises the author for masterful writing. The first job of fiction is to enlighten and/or entertain. Without doing that, the masterful writing is wasted.

I am not a practicing Catholic, even though was one when I was a kid. After all these years I still feel compelled to give something up for lent. This year, I’ve decided to give up swearing. I’m retired military and a construction worker. To stop swearing is no small task.

I tend to lean with you. The writing can’t be horrendous, but I have read so many well written uninteresting 300 page tortures that I’ve lost count. My wife ask me why I finish them and I tell her, I’m holding out hope that this long tedious journey is going somewhere.

This is my theory. This is a government building and the contractor was required to install peepholes in all exterior doors. Since the contractor was making $500 per peephole, there was no incentive to point out that they were not needed. Hence... a peephole on a glass door.

Here’s a funny story. My sister, who is a journalist, says,
“How are your book sales doing?”
My response: “Well… I can’t get my journalist sister to read my books, so there’s that.”

I wrote three and a half pages today and then rewrote it, with twice as much going on, in one page. And that’s how writing is done. Four pages to get one.

This was a year or two ago when Ron Perlman was doing a book signing at a bookstore in Grand Cayman. I gave him a signed copy of my novel, Island Dogs, which he graciously accepted. He was interesting to listen to and nice to chat with. Seemed like a good guy.

Yes… I stole this. And yes, it was actually my 3rd attempt. There was lettuce and tomato on the first one and onions on the second, but they seemed wrong. Maybe more bacon would perfect this salad.
