@doclauravater
And also imagine being a program director and saying something like that knowing the mental health issues and even sui**de rates among physicians. It’s so so soooo upsetting 😡😡😡
@doclauravater
Comments like "What are they even teaching you these days?" always crack me up. Like idk, I just got here and I think you're supposed to be doing the teaching part.
Med School Didn’t Teach This Pt. 2: If you’re using an interpreter, use even less medical jargon than you are already trying to skim down on. Use short sentences. Take pauses. Read nonverbal cues from your patient. Interpreter quality is never consistent. Signal quality over the
Finished my first ED shift today and got to do a laceration from start to finish on my own today. Did a couple in med school but never solely on my own to grab supplies, prep, wash, numb, stitch, and clean up. Really small step forward but a step nonetheless!

Me to McD's in Miami: Can I have a Spicy McChicken?
Them: Yes, a little spicy
Me: No, the Spicy McChicken
Them: Only a little
Me: Hablas español?
Them: Si
Me: Tienes el Eh-Spicy McChicken
Them: Ahh no, solamente el regular
Me: jajaja, dame uno por favor. *Chuckles in Spanish*
@AustinBolay
In the meantime while you still need to use an interpreter, here are some tips I posted! Any med student that works with me and any resident that worked with me while I was a senior, I was a stickler for improving interpreter interaction.

As the intern? No senior? Was there a department leader you could call? Backup attending? Hope it works out for ya. Will wait for your update after rounds 🫡
To the lady who tried using a Bed, Bath & Beyond coupon at Bath & Body Works AND INSISTED after initial rejection, I salute you and hope to one day also find courage of such magnitude.

This is why hospitals spend an arm and a leg acquiring practices and hiring physicians. Average family med doctor, one of the lowest paid physicians makes about 1.5M in revenue for a healthcare system from the amount of business generation they bring through direct services, but
@joshmcgoo
Same thing happened to me in residency when I was going to transport someone to X-ray myself after 2 hours of delays simply because there weren’t enough “transport people”. Told me to “focus on being a doctor”.

Maybe this tweet doesn’t fully cover the situation but I do think studying up on anatomy from a textbook prior to a case only preps you so far. I read before on all my cases to study anatomy as much as possible and once you’re in the field, it’s just like wtf is this…. There’s

could you kindly please respond to this tweet in a much more comedic way than I ever can, because as a pediatrician all I want to say is 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I’m a on my NICU rotation as a Peds resident and have gone to about 20 deliveries so far this week. The urge to cry every time is still very, very strong.
After a long discussion with a patient’s parent over their vaccine hesitancy, government conspiracies, and medical research where I mainly tried to debunk everything they believed, they asked if all future follow-ups could be with me exclusively. 😊

When I was in residency (which was very recent), it was very lonely knowing I had my sights set on something different. And I really couldn’t find mentors to guide me on the path. I’ve since met so many people willing to support the journey. Thank you for this post!
@pedsmd2b
Not no! But maybe it’s exactly who’s comin in to take signout that you’re craving to spill all the tea to 🍵…or just finally having a moment to talk like a normal human. For some, it could be that thin hair between holding on and burning out.

Sending all the love and support. You got this! Cherish the success stories and the wins and give everything you got to advocate for these kiddos.

This is exactly where my head went too. Like what…. Drive up productivity in the PICU sounds as dystopian as corporations controlling who gets their life-saving medications.
Oh wait…

Things you should do in residency. Pop a nasal cannula on yourself and keep it on for a few hours before you judge patients for being annoyed by them. I gotta say… I don’t like it.
@DrJoyceB
The fact that my decisions mattered for patients, that I felt more comfortable questioning my attendings, that I was there at 3 am being the one someone would count on when we got a CT scan with bad results and was the only one available to advise and comfort families because we
The stifling of creativity that happens in medical training, it’s hierarchical system, and the personality traits traditionally valued, are just some of the reasons making change and fixing a broken system is so challenging.
To all of those who didn’t match, don’t give up! I know many who took a year to gain more experience, then reapply. Today is not the day to think about that. Today is for feeling the feels. Cry, eat, and reach out to your support systems. You’re graduating so soon!

When I chose Pediatrics, the overall reason was to give as many kids the best opportunity at living their best, fullest lives. News has been a constant source of anger and disappointment, but today is only the second time I’ve cried from a headline.

What I say: I’m a pediatrician.
What I wanna say:
Prior to pilonidal cyst incision & drainage, my attending joked to the patient about how they’re like Ross on Friends when everyone was checking out his butt. The patient was 13 and had ZERO CLUE what he was talking about.

Lil midweek motivation to all you first year residents - You’re doing great Remember you’re not supposed to know everything yet.
For all last year residents - 1 more year. You’re jaded already and that’s fair. Convert that cynicism to actionable pearls for juniors and interns!
@DocMcCafferty
Hi Dr. McCafferty. Would you be okay if I messaged you? This post broke me and i think it’s super relevant to a startup I’m building, which aims to fix some of this problem, but I want to make sure I’m on the right track.
Dad with a kid on his shoulders walked by and said “we’ll go to the playground first and then we’re having pizza for dinner.” What a day that kid is about to have.
When sneezing while wearing a facemask, do you just sneeze straight into the mask, inevitably dousing your mouth and nose, or do you lift your mask and sneeze into your shirt? Or third option run as far from humans as possible before sneezing at all?

This is gonna hurt a lot of ppl. SAVE saves Americans significantly on their monthly payments without increasing the interest burden. It also helps those aiming for PSLF who are already paying their loans off by working public service jobs for 10 years.
BREAKING: A federal appeals court blocked the Biden administration's student debt relief plan, which would have lowered monthly payments for millions of borrowers.

around this time and just wanna say: give it time, this too shall pass, frustration means you care, crying means you care, it’s better to ask and be a fool once, you’re going to be a great attending one day.
