Pleased to debut the cover/image art for TAITRONICA!
@personasama
and
@artist_black
are absolutely on fire for this one!
Preorders (outside Japan) are here:
“I want fewer anime by more animators on higher wages” is a big mood. I feel like 95% of the series that debut each season are totally forgotten within months of airing, and that’s a sign that Too Much Is Being Made
I think the only remotely correct thing here is “no weed” and that’s because the Japanese gov’t thinks marijuana is as bad as heroin and punishes accordingly
Coooooooool, apparently NFT art is *facilitating* art theft rather than preventing it because anyone can steal art and turn it into an NFT. I hate this so much
The funniest thing to me is when awful Western nerds glom onto the idea that Japanese otakudom is some pure arch-conservative hivemind. As if there aren’t entire rows of LGBT folks selling their self-made weird queer art at Comiket
“People thought MvC2 music was BAD?!??”
Yes, they absolutely did, to the point that hacking the game to replace the OST was normal and expected in the player community for roughly a decade. Lots of folks had their own MvC2 mixtape
You can buy volumes of translated Shonen Jump manga at Target and Wal-Mart but not DC/Marvel issues, yet people still wonder why manga is so much more popular than American comic books now
Genuine question - if Marvel and DC are owned by Disney and Warner Brothers, why aren’t they lobbying for comic books to be sold in gas station toy isles and 5 Below stores - aka places where kids would actually see them? Comic shops are too specialized to attract a mass audience
By age 40, you should have a small circle of friends who talk about:
- Jumping into light fierce
- Stale bread
- Water without any ice
- The newest season of The Simpsons
- And dirt
By age 40, you should have a small circle of friends who talk about:
• Investing
• Early retirement
• Self-development
• Living their purpose
• Making the world better
Which dates Crazy Taxi the most?
- Offspring music
- Tower Records still existing
- A sit-down Pizza Hut in California
- The idea that San Francisco is a viable place for eccentric people to live
Holy shit, SegaTails was one of my old AOL names from my early teenagery (shocking to nobody). Was I the first recorded person to be stymied by the Carnival Night barrel
The whole idea of “arcade games cheat and rip you off” is basically a Western thing. The list of “arcade games that are impossible to 1cc by humans” is almost exclusively Western stuff. And let’s not forget how Konami made almost all of their games worse to satisfy NA operators
Guilty Gear Stive sold 11,722 copies for PS4 in Japan, PS5 version didn't chart in the top 20. Given that Arc has announced 300K sales, I think it's safe to assume that interest is a. overwhelmingly from Western markets and b. Steam/PC is accounting for a LOT of sales
LRT: former TMS animators Mitsuru Hongo and Yoshiteru Tsujino expressing their annoyance about how their outsourced work on Disney shows like Ducktales, Winnie the Pooh, and Wuzzles had no names in the credits beyond that of TMS, despite nearly everything being done by JP staff
Otaku subcultures are very appealing to LGBT folks in Japan! Doujinshi culture provides a means of authentic self-expression! It’s fascinating and very rarely talked about in Western circles!
Ah, here's what I was thinking of: Rumiko Takahashi Illust Collection '85. A weird mix of early lo-res CG, traditional pen/acrylics, and canvas backgrounds. Delightfully dated in all the right ways
So I’m going to not give direct attention to today’s terrible Cyberpunk take (this is a daily thing now) and instead talk about something related: the death of mainstream games criticism in Japan
I tend to watch most anime after it’s complete, and I usually determine what to watch by the metric of “does my TL still care about this a month or two later”
An example I just thought of: a guy who collects Garfield merchandise wouldn’t be thought of as “otaku” by Westerners, but in Japan he’d be tabling at Comiket with his self-published guidebook to all of the Garfield collectibles made in 1987
The term “otaku culture” (which I’m guilty of using) is something of a misnomer — there are hundreds, possibly thousands of JP mini-cultures under that umbrella, many at odds with the western perception of what being an “otaku” entails
Indie designers: so know that the PS/N64/Saturn lo-res polygon visual style is getting some traction, but please also consider: basing your artstyle around the very distinct visuals of Sega’s Model 2
@S_R_Tweets
Mango Sentinel wasn’t even a default color! The community MvC2 was hacked to hell to change non-gameplay things players disliked and people just… forgot it all happened
Funny how those "no Adults Only games on our platform" mandates seem to crumble under the sweet allure of cryptogrift
"We're OK with AO games now, just not *those* games"
Can confirm officially that the lost Beavis and Butthead arcade game is *miserable*. Terrible frame rate, awful controls, art that doesn’t mesh with the characters. Matt and I played for like 5 minutes and stopped
That’s the third Comiket in a row that’s been postponed or cancelled now.
It’s a rough time out there for JP artists who exhibit at doujinshi events, so please do consider reaching out and supporting your favorite creators — many are taking commissions right now
Remember in 80s and 90s anime how you could just slip in characters from another studio’s show for a cute cameo and everyone was like “awww yeah that rules” and now you can’t do that because rightholders want that sweet payday whenever possible
@MoogIenator
It’s dependent on where you go. It’ll be nice in tourist heavy spots I can attest that the post-Comiket trash heaps from people camping outside the venue for hours are the stuff of legends
People mad about an “esports focused” Virtua Fighter really don’t know shit about the environment that VF (especially VF2) fostered in Japan. VF was eSports before the term “eSports” emerged in some marketing guru’s brain
Oh man it’s my Sonic Forces review and I will tell you: I will gladly, eagerly play Sonic Forces over last-gen Cyberpunk
Also: I would rather play any Taito arcade release from 1988 and 1989 than Cyberpunk, and that includes Rastan II
Cult leader, con artist, conspiracy theorist, anime financier, and general garbage human Ryuho Okawa is dead
He lead the Happy Science cult/movement, which directly commissioned several anime films about how he was Jesus/Buddha/Hermes/from Venus
Another rabbit hole I’m going down: JP retrogaming Twitter has posited that Ryuichi Sakamoto saved Japanese retrogaming thanks to his vocal opposition to a law that would have banned resale of electronics made before 2001
Another big problem with “best media of all time” lists: they are hyper-regional. There is a whole bunch of stuff—important, influential stuff—you’ve never seen/played/heard/read mostly due to the circumstances of where you live!
Yeah, I know the Nerd got a lot of traction on Nico, but I figured that—much like in the west—the heyday of AVGN popularity had been over for a while.
But now with the new Zelda announcement folks are saying “Nooooo I want to watch the CD-I Zelda episode again!”
Holy crap, the rebroadcast of the EVA TV series blurs/removes all of the old Gainax logos. Anno is severing those ties with his former company hardcore
Hey guys! Before you tweet that ex-Blizzard person about the China thing, REMEMBER:
He wrecked Firefall with bad and abusive management (and a deal with Chinese investors):
And he’s generally a shithead few established people in games want to work with
Hi, I'm here to point out that Yakuza: Like a Dragon (which I just reviewed on
@anime
) is a great game that humanizes people on society's bottom rung (the homeless, sex workers, immigrants) and has some pretty scathing commentary about how our systems fail these folks
The 80s were the peak of anti-Japanese racism in the USA, so even though companies imported and repackaged Japan’s cartoons and outsourced animation work there, they did all they could to erase any trace of the Japanese names that made them
Cults in retrogaming:
-Garage Sale addicts
-Atari Dads
-Arcade guys who only play pre-1985 stuff
-British PC evangelists
-Japanese PC evangelists
-Guys with a bedroom for their NES collection
-Frequent Twin Galaxies defenders
-Cave box collectors
-The Neo Geo People
Cults in Pokkén:
-FGC players who hate the game but still play it
-Ex-Smashers
-Diehard Pokémon Fanatics
-"Magikarp is orange" folk
-SM2's (the true LGBT)
-Blastoise body positivity group
-Allister Fan Club
-Wi-Fi warriors
-Wi-Fi warriors w/o LAN
-Main Pokkén Discord
-Furries
Adding to this: SNK was eating Capcom’s lunch in Japan and Asia in ‘93-94 because Capcom kept rehashing Street Fighter II while SNK was busy releasing a huge variety of new and interesting fighting games with different mechanics
"SNK is releasing too many fighting games" is a statement that only makes sense if you believe that fighting games are ultimately disposable and whenever a developer releases a new one you are supposed to abandon the old one so devs should only ever make one fighting game.
Idiot: I demand that all gamedevs be hardcore gamers
Me: Ask any game dev in Japan how often they get to play new games. Go on. Ask
(I remember interviewing Yu Suzuki and he was like “oh yeah I play Puyo Puyo sometimes but not much else really”)
Doujin circles, as they existed in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, aren’t as much of a thing anymore. Most stuff from the 00s onward is spearheaded by an individual, maybe with guest contributions. Even the big anthologies have someone organizing, similar to art zines
The term “otaku culture” (which I’m guilty of using) is something of a misnomer — there are hundreds, possibly thousands of JP mini-cultures under that umbrella, many at odds with the western perception of what being an “otaku” entails
Japanese commenters on Twitter: Yeah this is good article that really gets to the heart of what makes KyoAni
English speaking commenters on Twitter: THE HEADLINE MENTIONS WOMEN, CLEARLY THIS IS POLITICS
KyoAni has been a major force in spreading anime both inside and outside Japan. In an industry dominated by men and traditionally aimed at men, it has a reputation for employing more women than many of its competitors, writes one expert
An artist I follow is getting shit from a certain website after asking them to remove their work post w/o permission
Assholes on the internet will scream about “respecting Japanese creators” during arguments about localization but not when creators ask them to not be shitheads
Here’s an interesting historical tidbit. Sega was one of the main sponsors of Evangelion’s original airing, and apparently had a good deal of sway: they requested Rei’s eyes be colored red. Thus, you could say Sega is responsible for one of anime’s most enduring character designs
I love hearing about peoples’ experiences with games of the 80s and 90s from outside North America and I encourage folks to share them and destroy very NA-centric gaming narratives
@oalvesaquisoueu
How retrogaming is slowly becoming the same everywhere. From people who think the videogame crash affected their country even though they're not from the US, to folks who love contra, megaman and castlevania but never played the retro games that were popular in their countries
Hey did you know that Yakuza 0 is 5 whole dollary-doos on Steam today? It's easily a 100-hour game if you do everything (and this is the rare game where you'll *want* to do everything) so grab it and enjoy your crime drama mixed with helping random weirdoes
(One of my favorite industry interview moments was talking to Kazuma Kaneko and learning that he worked on The Inhumanoids as an animator and LOVED that show’s designs)
@pullahoko
I can’t be the only person now thinking “RPG but all the bosses are famous landmarks” would be kinda neat. But we all know the real money’s in the gacha game that lets us pull for Bean-chan and Picasso-kun
I feel like I’m rehashing the same points here a lot, but:
“This character design look dumb and/or doesn’t fit the tone/setting of the game” = valid criticism
“The artist behind this design drew smut once” = NOT A VALID CRITICISM
An interesting bit I heard on my trip: apparently Touhou is currently very popular with Japanese teens, and it’s mostly due to YouTube. My brain’s still trying to process Touhou being in the same category as Minecraft and Fortnite tbh
Comedian Ken Shimura died from Coronavirus complications. He’s not very well known in the West, but Japanese Twitter is talking a lot about it, as he was very famous.
Most Western gamers might know him from the PC Engine game Kato-chan and Ken-chan, which became JJ & Jeff
I’ve taken an interest in vintage (mid-late 80s to early 90s) doujinshi and I’ve found some real gems on this trip. 80s arcade game fanart gives me life
I love how everything about her has a radiance of strength and determination, even the smallest hits feel hugely satisfying.
You put in the work, and the results feel amazing.
Also she is beautifulplease make sure she’s hella buff for VF6 Sega

Hello friends. Naomi/Atomiswave/Dreamcast support was added to FightCade 2 recently. I am here to tell you that you need to start playing Fighting Vipers 2. Thread!
I am of the opinion that sexy games of all stripes should exist and enjoy Hades’ aesthetic (just bought it!)
But I gotta say: Japanese games have been sexing up their dudes to appeal to a sizable female fanbase for decades in similar ways and y’all haven’t noticed
Every ad company thinking of pulling these stunts should be legally required to watch the Segata Sanshiro self-sacrifice spot and realize what they are doing wrong
At any Japanese combini you’ll find both current anthologies in the magazine aisle and a rack of manga, both the newest books and compilations of classic stuff, priced cheaply. Imagine US comics having that availability and visibility!
I hope recent events open everyone’s eyes to the fact that practically *everyone* in the anime production pipeline, both in Japan and overseas, is overworked and underpaid… well, except the execs at the top, of course
Can we just like… stop hatewatching
Have we as a society not yet learned that irony and spite dollars are actually the same thing as happy enjoyment dollars
You ever see a tweet showing an old Famitsu review from the 80s or 90s and say, “whoa, I can’t believe how harsh these reviewers were to these classic games?” That’s because, at the time, Famitsu had lots of competition and what set them apart was brutal, nitpicky criticism.
Hisashi Eguchi: “I did character design, layout, keyframes, and animation direction on Sonic CD. My total pay was 240,000 yen for four months of work.” Roughly $500/month with the exchange rate at the time.
This story is tragicomic Korean official Pokemon video game league was ran so poorly this year (partially due to S/V’s bugginess) that top 4 all submitted hacked teams with only the Metronome (basically random select) move in protest and were all DQed
All Finalists received this email just few minutes ago.
The Master Division Final round will be CANCELED.
All four participants will be disqualified from the tournament, there for will be canceled their Day2 invites. They will not receive any inquiries regarding.
I think a lot of online fandom folks would be shocked, SHOCKED by going to Comiket on the mostly 男性向 day and seeing how many women are the the ones at the table selling ero doujin
thank god all deviantly perverted media is made by men and not women, the pure angel gender that would never do that - average twiter user almost completely unironically
If you think Western game review NDAs offer a lot of control to the publishers, it’s even worse in Japan, and copyright law there is on their side. You remember Atlus Japan forbidding Persona 5 streaming? That came from JP publishers being used to wielding that power over there.
Hiroshi Ono, aka Mr. Dotman, passed away on Oct 16 after illness. He absolutely defined the looks of Namco’s early arcade titles and set a standard for many pixel artists to follow. If you ever drew a pixel sprite you owe something to Ono-san
LRT: Square-Enix just seems so desperate for "Western credibility" when it's like... guys, you're one of the most respected and storied publishers out there who released one of 2020's best-selling, most highly lauded games, you don't need validation
