An example I just thought of: a guy who collects Garfield merchandise wouldn’t be thought of as “otaku” by Westerners, but in Japan he’d be tabling at Comiket with his self-published guidebook to all of the Garfield collectibles made in 1987
The term “otaku culture” (which I’m guilty of using) is something of a misnomer — there are hundreds, possibly thousands of JP mini-cultures under that umbrella, many at odds with the western perception of what being an “otaku” entails

"SNK is releasing too many fighting games" is a statement that only makes sense if you believe that fighting games are ultimately disposable and whenever a developer releases a new one you are supposed to abandon the old one so devs should only ever make one fighting game.
