Nice article from @SpencrGreenberg looking at the factors that go into how we respond to evidence. Three ways of updating your beliefs, in light of new evidence

@Footballkook @michaelshermer He has, as have I. The author(s) of Genesis seem a level of understanding appropriate to their time and place.

@taylorgrayson @michaelshermer I've been to emotive, uplifting, charismatic, fun and dull services. The duller the service the more likely the congregation are there due to family and other social pressures.

@EdGibney @Oliver_S_Curry The closer one. If they are equally distant, then neither. You are likely in simulation created by an undergraduate learning moral philosophy. If you play along, next time you will find yourself standing behind a fat man on a bridge down track from a runaway trolley.

@kaykryssal @Theres2ManyLies @peta It is impossible to live without exploitation. You can make choices that reduce overall suffering, although there are always trade offs. Most plant based diets are made possible by transforming ecosystems into monocultures where diversity of life is treated as pests to be killed.

@peta @bitchnamedsam1 Yes, the incentives are not conducive to animal welfare. I do think the industry needs an overhaul. Saying that, farming practices have been improving and many farmers care for the wellbeing of livestock. Happier healthy animals can still be profitable.

@peta @Ned_Cortex I think the term you are looking for is selectively breed. Wool prices are on a long term decline, so many farmers are now buying sheep that have been breed to not need shearing. You are mostly incorrect about insulation against heat. A thick fleece in summer is cruel.

@peta @Angel_05Rose Kind and gentle exist on a spectrum. Of course it is possible to have better animal welfare standards when working with sheep. Its also possible to work in a calmer manner, this includes shearing.

@JanineAScott @michaelshermer I think of cults as existing on the extremes of 2 spectrums. 1,They typically demand an extremely high degree of certainty. 2, They typically have an extremely poor cost benefit ratio for non-leadership members.

@JanineAScott @michaelshermer Depends on how we define what is a cult. Many cults use a pyramid scheme and some pyramid schemes look very culty. Many groups organized around a belief are hostile to scrutiny, are they all cults?

@Karl333777 @WiringTheBrain I don't think we live in a deterministic universe, I suspect it's a probabilistic universe. I still don't think that gets us free will. How do you see morality being a factor?

@xzistor @WiringTheBrain I think the attribution of free will is related to predictability. When something acts in an unpredictable manner we are more likely to attribute agency. I also think there is an evolutionary advantage to being unpredictable but not random.

@xzistor @WiringTheBrain I'll give this one a read, I'm quite familiar with Lisa Feldman-Barrett's work, so this might be a good way for me to get a grasp of your work.

@xzistor @WiringTheBrain "I am" about 98% sure that this thing "I" call "me" is due to the functioning of "my" body and nervous system. Currently "I" am unaware of compelling evidence for free will other than it feels like "I" have it.
