🚨 NEW WORDS 🚨
Here's the 2nd installment of 'Midseason Scouting Notes'. In this edition, I discuss the following 5 prospects:
Cody Williams, DJ Wagner, Jonathan Mogbo, Dailyn Swain, and RJ Luis
People, it's okay to admit you were wrong about Brandon Ingram. He obviously took a step from last year to this year, but he took a step forward each year in LA also. He showed plenty of flashes to believe in him. One main thing was Lakers didn't use him ideally
Throwback to this clutch floater from 3 from Luka Doncic in the ACB Finals back in 2018
This was Luka's last game with Real Madrid before getting drafted
The Lakers, Bucks, and Raptors are the only 3 teams that have not lost to a team that is currently under .500
The Lakers, Bucks, and Clippers are the only 3 teams with at least 9 wins vs teams that are currently over .500
Rob Dillingham was 0-5 from 3 before checking back in with 2:23 left in the game with Kentucky down 4
Here are Kentucky's next 3 offensive possessions:
The confidence Cal has in Dillingham to put him back in the game in crunch time in a game where he’s struggled shooting is pretty telling
Dillingham proves him right and hits B2B 3s
Paige Bueckers doing Paige Bueckers things
Here are all 8 of Bueckers' buckets in the 2nd half and in OT, where she had 23 points (8-9 FG) and dominated from midrange
It’s been awesome watching Lu Dort defend Harden these last 2 games, so I put together some of my favorite clips of him defending Harden.
Harden will still make some stepbacks, but Dort does a really good job not fouling & also uses his strength to body up Harden on drives
Charles Matthews is such a pest on defense & I love it. Some guys get scared when they see Matthews defending them. He's one of the best defenders in this draft & I'm glad more people are starting to give him the recognition he deserves
Here are some clips from his 1st scrimmage
It’s crazy how much of an impact Dwight Howard had in his 16 minutes tonight. Really nice seeing him get right back on track after not having a role vs Houston
His physicality, defense, and rebounding bothered Denver in Game 1, and he should play an important role this series
Myles Powell will probably be the most dynamic shooter in the 2020 draft class. He was already one of the best shooters in college last year.
- Great shooter off-movement (Screens, Hand Offs, etc)
- Knockdown spot up shooter
- Unlimited range
- Solid shooter off the dribble
Last night wasn't the first time Arizona ran an elevator screen for Kerr Kriisa as a decoy to set up a backdoor. They ran the exact same thing to get Mathurin a dunk late in the TCU game when they needed a bucket
Chet Holmgren's averages over his last 5 games:
19.6 PTS / 11.6 REB / 2.2 AST / 3.4 BLK in 28.2 MPG
85.9% True Shooting
72.0% (36-50) from the field
60.9% (14-23) from 3
Really interested to see how Poku looks in a couple of years
Going straight from Greek 2nd Division to the NBA at his age shouldn't be forgotten. Such a huge jump in competition. He's had his struggles, but he's consistently flashing impressive plays for someone his height also
I don’t think I’ve ever seen another player who is as streaky of a shooter as Lonzo Ball. It’s crazy because he's never "average". It's always a really good or really bad streak of games
18-19 3PT% Splits
Games 1-10: 41.3%
Games 11-20: 26.5%
Games 21-30: 23.4%
Games 31-41: 39.1%
The Lakers' roster last year allowed them to play big or small depending on the matchup & it was an important part of their playoff run
The crazy thing is that it seems like their roster has gotten more versatile this offseason & they have so many different lineups they can use
Zach Norvell Jr has impressed through the Lakers first 2 SL games. In my opinion, he deserved to be drafted & the Lakers ended up w/ one of the best UDFAs
Tonight, he ended w/ 20 PTS (7-10 FG, 3-5 3PT) & showed his ability to score in a variety of ways besides just spotting up
Shamorie Ponds had a nice game in his first combine scrimmage this year. Showed his capability of shooting off the dribble & his passing. His handles looked really good. It allowed him to get himself & teammates open. His passing is very underrated & deserves more recognition
Regardless of how you feel about Zach Edey as an NBA prospect and whether or not his game will translate to having a successful NBA career, everyone should appreciate how special of a college player he is. Absolutely dominant.
More James Bouknight, showing nice space creation on the stepback to knock down the shot at the buzzer. Just before this, he had a nice sequence in transition showing off some solid handles and a nice dumpoff for an assist
Everyone, the time has come. I have finally published the updated version of my NBA Range Shooting Database for this current 2023 class.
- 129 prospects added (all of ESPN's top 100 and more)
- A total of 456 prospects dating back to 2020
I have mentioned this over and over again, but Andre Curbelo has really been one of my favorite players to watch this year, so I decided to put together some of his best plays early this season
Just sit back and enjoy some Curbelo fun
Jaden Hardy shot 39% (32-82) on C&S 3s for the Ignite this year, which is really impressive considering that he's been shooting from the NBA line all year in the G-League
Lamelo with the rebound in traffic and then the behind the back pass in transition for the assist. He already has 9 rebounds in 11 minutes and consistently pushing the pace
Dalton Knecht (Left) and Blake Hinson (Right) Shooting Breakdowns
The Lakers definitely tried to address shooting over the last few days by getting two of the better shooters in the class
Brandon Miller's shooting numbers through 13 games:
Total 3s: 44.8% (43-96)
Catch & Shoot 3s: 49.2% (29-59)
Off-The-Dribble 3s: 42.1% (8-19)
NBA 3s: 43.2% (19-44)
Currently has a 3PE of 94 on
@CerebroSports
, which is in the 99th percentile
Looking back at the 2018 Draft Class, and it's absolutely wild that the lottery of that class included:
Deandre Ayton
Luka Doncic
Jaren Jackson Jr
Trae Young
Wendell Carter Jr
Collin Sexton
Mikal Bridges
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Miles Bridges
Michael Porter Jr
Something that I've noticed over the last few years is that the Draft Twitter consensus has missed on a decent amount of bigs. Walker Kessler, Alperen Sengun, Isaiah Stewart, and Precious Achiuwa were all disliked by a good amount. Obviously still early, but something to note
Out of the 129 prospects I added to my NBA Range Shooting Database for this past class, 29 of them attempted at least 100 NBA 3s
D'Moi Hodge topped the list shooting 43.23% (67-155) on NBA 3s
Myles Powell's gravity on the floor is ridiculous. He consistently sees a lot of help defense, traps, and double teams and it was very apparent last night vs Butler. Here is the first of two videos to show the gravity Myles Powell has on the floor & how he answers w/ his passing
Darius Garland is one of the best shotmakers in this draft while also being an underrated defender
- Shooter with range & nice scoring moves OTD
- Nice handles & change of pace
- Good ball denial & positioning
- Moves feet well & doesn't allow opposing players to use screens
Had to take a quick break from watching March Madness to check in on Alondes Williams and Wake Forest in the NIT
This dunk seemed like a nice way to put the exclamation point on the game
@Anthonysmdoyle
Utah is a good home team but I am more impressed w/ the Lakers dealing w/ players being sick on the 2nd night of a B2B on probably the toughest road B2B trip in the league. Utah was 8-1 at home w/ wins over Clips/Bucks/ Philly. I think it's fair to say it was an impressive win
I'm really interested to see how Talen Horton-Tucker looks in a couple of years. The Lakers are one of the top teams I'd trust with getting his body right and they just hired one of the best player development coaches in the league
The Lakers are hiring Phil Handy as an assistant coach, a source said. The former Raptors assistant will be at the front of the bench with the Lakers. He also coached in five straight NBA Finals winning two titles.
Hi everyone, I wanted to announce that I also joined the incredible team over at
@SportsInfo_SIS
as a Video Scout. I really appreciate
@Jake_Loos
for the opportunity, and I am really excited about everything we've been doing!
Anthony Edwards put up 18 PTS in Georgia's exhibition game vs Valdosta State and his shotmaking was on full display. He showed his athleticism on a couple of rebounds and had a couple of nice passes in transition
Sorry that the quality of the video is a little laggy at times
Mikal Bridges’ defense vs Jayson Tatum was really impressive, so I decided to put together clips of their matchup (including shots Tatum made). For the most part, Bridges had a big impact on Tatum’s shots.
Already looking forward to their next matchup against each other
Jaylen Nowell's passing was underrated all year. He put it on full display against Utah State in the tourney and continued to show it during his two combine scrimmages
Jarrett Culver was really impressive today. He put up 29 PTS, 8 REB, 7 AST
Culver is so good at finishing around the rim. According to Hoop-Math, he's shooting 68.9% at the rim this year & he put his finishing ability on full display today. He was also knocking down his shots
While I disagree with
@Barlowe500
's take on having Brandon Miller at
#3
, I respect him explaining his reasoning, and not giving into groupthink. Having open and honest discussions about different perspectives is what Draft Twitter used to be about, and needs more of now
Another game with intriguing flashes from Poku. His play has clearly improved from the first month to the G-League bubble to now. Just looks so much more comfortable out there
He had a really nice hesi to get to the basket against Porzingis at 0:43 in the video below
Heading into the Philly/Toronto series, the Embiid/Gasol matchup was something to pay attention to because Gasol has defended Embiid well over the years. Gasol's success continued in Game 1
Gasol does a nice job not biting on Embiid's pump fakes & matches Embiid's physicality
Everyone already knows how ridiculous of an athlete Amen Thompson is, so no analysis needed on this one
Just enjoy 2 minutes of some of his best dunks from this past season
It sometimes felt like Jalen Green was under-discussed last year because of how great so many different rookies were, but he had an impressive rookie season and was one of the most electric rookies to watch. A ridiculous athlete who just floats on his dunks
Brandon Ingram averaged 19.2 PTS, 6.1 REB, and 4.1 AST on 50.6% FG and good defense when Bron was out. I'm not even saying "he's great" or "that's amazing" but you don't hear about that from the media because everyone's worried about the narrative that "he sucks"
Here are some of my favorite passes from Franz Wagner out of the pick and roll throughout his rookie season. The passing at his size is very impressive, and the passing that the Magic will be able to get from Franz and Paolo Banchero will be really fun to keep an eye on
In 5 Summer League games, Keegan Murray has already made more than half as many shots OTD in the HC than he did all of last year at Iowa (34 games)
According to Synergy, Murray shot 32.5% (13-40) on OTD jumpers in the HC at Iowa, and is currently shooting 46.7 (7-15) in SL
This draft class might actually have the worst 'top college prospect' in a while, but I can't remember a recent year where I felt comfortable about this many lotto level prospects. Think there might be 15-20 lotto level guys this year, and it's been closer to 8-10 for me recently
Brandon Ingram (4-7 3PT) had a career high in 3PTA
He reached five 3s in a game only once last year & has shot at least five in their first two games this year
Yeah, he's shooting well (6-12, 50%) but regardless of his %, it's good to see the increased volume for now
Jaden Ivey's burst will allow him to get into the paint as much as he wants this season, and crafty finishes like this will only make him that much more dangerous
In my 'NBA Range' database, I had Cole Swider down for shooting 43.14% (44-102) on NBA 3s this past season in college, which was 1 of 13 players to shoot over 40% on at least 75 attempts.
In 8 Summer League games, Swider shot 52.8% (28-53) from 3. Just a ridiculous shooter.
I thought Nickeil Alexander-Walker was really solid in his 15 minutes on the floor tonight. Even with his lack of explosiveness, he's able to make an impact on the floor with his IQ, shooting, passing, and his length. He loves working out of the PnR and it's very effective
In my database of 180 college + international prospects, 59 players attempted at least 75 NBA 3s this past season, and 13 shot above 40% on those attempts.
Cole Swider was one of those 13, shooting 43.14% (44-102) on NBA 3s
Syracuse sharpshooter Cole Swider has agreed to a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell
@TheAthletic
@Stadium
. Swider and Pippen Jr. take over the Lakers‘ two slots.
As I mentioned before, Coby White really loves splitting the defense. I decided to put some clips together showing his ability to split the defense and get into the paint to finish or dump it off to a teammate.
Nice to finally get some film on next year's Duke team. Got a little preview of Paolo Banchero running some 5s and saw a little bit of everything (defense, pushing the ball up the floor, passing, scoring, etc.)
Luka Samanic (Croatia) showed quite a few flashes on both sides of the ball in 19 minutes in his first NBA Combine scrimmage
- Moved his feet on defense
- Contested shots
- Attacked off the catch
- Post game
- Made a nice 3 off movement
Decided to compare Ryan Dunn's defensive numbers to prospects drafted since 2017 that consensus seemed to view as elite defensive wings (ranked by DBPM)
We're still early in the season as Dunn has only played 7 games, but what he's done through these first 7 games is ridiculous
What a defensive read by Zion Williamson... This rotation is great and look how high he gets to steal this pass. Nice awareness to pass it ahead right away also
Nikola Topic being an impressive passer at 6'6" with his speed and ability to get into the paint is a big reason why he's such an intriguing prospect
Here's a video of his best assists so far this season and it also shows his comfortability passing with either hand
Throwback to this clutch floater from 3 from Luka Doncic in the ACB Finals back in 2018
This was Luka's last game with Real Madrid before getting drafted
Watching Chet Holmgren turn defense into offense has been a joy to watch this year. Has shown the ability to grab and go, throw hit ahead passes, and also trail plays to knock down 3s at the top of the key
