Contracts are signed, so I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that I will be moving to the University of Glasgow in the new year to start my own research group as a Lecturer in Bacteriology in the School of Infection and Immunity 🥳🍾
Reviewing a manuscript and have absolutely zero issues with it. None. Its well written. The figures are good. The work is interesting and useful. The data is available. Conclusions have not been over sold. What to say? I feel like they aren't getting value out of my peer review!
That's a wrap on an 11-year Postdoctoral career! 6 fixed term contracts, 4 groups, 3 universities. It's been a slog, but it's prepared me for the next step, PI-ville.
Thank you to my
@ModMedMicro
colleagues for my leaving gift to help with the Oxford to Glasgow sunshine deficit
Today should have been our wedding day! Rather poetically the wedding of two microbiologist has been taken down by a virus. Here is looking back to more carefree times when we had jumped through all the paperwork hoops and gotten our marriage licence 💚👰🤵
@lundpa
If it's a well documented collection, make the database available to see if anyone wants anything? Some new PIs might be able to home parts of your collection and it could help kick start their research
What an absolute belter of a week for women in microbiology! Fantastic to have such brilliant role models to show us the way 😁👩🏾💻👩🏽🔬🏆 Congratulations ladies 👏🏼👍🏾
The new Wellcome Trust Early Career grants have a 3 year post-PhD cap!?! I thought we were moving away from this nonsense?! Big jump up to the Mid-Career Development awards which are for 8 years funding and competing against people who are within 3 years of permanent posts 😭😡
📢 Excited to announce that I'll be
@UofGlasgow
bound in February. Hired as a lecturer in bacteriology to set up my own research group. 🏴🦠🧫🧬

Martin Maiden gives a nod to the members of his group over the years and how longevity of lab teams has been key to the type of work they wanted to do. Stability for postdocs is good for them and good for science 👍🏽
Exciting things happening at Microbiology Society publishing. The innovative Access Microbiology launches a new open research platform, which is completely free for the first 12 months. It's the place to send your smaller pieces, null data, and replication studies.
We are delighted to announce that
#AccessMicro
has launched as an innovative open research platform and is now open for submissions. Find out how the platform offers a new service to our community.

Today I should be in a
@MicrobioSoc
professional development session on fellowship writing. Instead I'm part of a team working to validate antibody lateral flow assays for COVID-19. Keeping me busy and out of the snack cupboard at home 🤭
@Prokaryota
Difficult to lyse cells and no access to a bead beater? Resuspend cells in water/PBS and give them a quick blast (5 secs) in the microwave to burst them open. Not sure I would use this for expensive genome/RNA seq, but for PCR, RT-PCR etc is works a treat.
Delighted to have been elected onto the
@MicrobioSoc
Publishing Committee as the ECM representative. Thank you to the ECM Forum members who voted for me 👍🏻 Excited to continue working with this tour de force of Early Career Microbiologists!
Today was my last
@MicrobioSoc
meeting as part of the Early Career Committee 😢 Four fantastic and productive years of working with engaged peers, and the truly wonderful and supportive MicroSoc staff. Thank you all, and see some of you over on the Impact and Influence team 🙋🏻♀️
MicroSoc annual conference cancelled. Well done to
@MicrobioSoc
on this hard decision. With the Society's 75th anniversary being marked at this years event, this would have been a heart breaking choice for everyone who put in years of work into this event.

Microbial Genomics is looking for early career members (PhD/postdoc) to join a Board of Reviewers. An opportunity to learn about peer-review from the other side! For information on how to get involved and learn vital skills, take a look at the news story:
Access Microbiology hitting the big time with this endorsement 🥰 This platform has been boldly leading the way in scientific publishing without much fanfare (compared to say the Elife updates). Feels great to be seen 🤩
Open Science and transparent peer review are great to make science more open and honest.
@MicrobioSoc
has a wonderful platform called Access Microbiology, which does exactly that. It will also accept replication studies and negative results.

That's it- we are fully vaxed 🥳
Now if only my post-covid immune system would "calm-down calm-down" and stop attacking me, I could pretend this whole sorry episode didn't happen 😝
Been in Oxford for 20 months and finally bought myself a set of wheels. My first bike since I was 12. Cue terrifying cycle home alone when it wouldn't fit in the car 😬 Road riding and navigation- not my strongest skill set 😖 Regretting choosing to live up Headington Hill 🚴
We are hiring! Lab based RA position looking at how and why some people get sick when others don't
I will be at MicroSoc next week if anyone wants to chat about it. Please retweet and share with your contacts

Recruiting a molecular microbiology Postdoc for a combination of wet and dry lab work. Advert is out with very broad requirements to attract plenty of applicants. Get in touch if you're interested
@Prokaryota
Oooofff I hear ya! I once spent weeks trying to get a PCR to work, including redesigning the primers. Turns out, the master mix didn't have DNTPs in it. This was in my 6th year of postdocing so should have been an easy thing for me to spot🤦🏽♀️
@SGriffin_Lab
I was down at a nurses' strike picket line yesterday. They had huge public support, with lots of honks and a big trailer full of goodies given by passersby. Hopefully they have enough backing to go all the way on this one 💙
I've just registered for the FREE

early career conference happening Sept 28th 29th. Looking forward to the science talks (obvs!) but also the fellowships and careers talks from early career peers
First meeting of the new

Yeah..........if you're an Early Career Microbiologist and want to learn how to peer review properly, then get experience via the Microbiology Society Reviewer Mentee scheme.

This conference always receives rave reviews. A friendly small meeting (no PIs!!!) where you get to hone your presentation skills, work on career development, and most importantly make connections with your peers- the people who will be your colleagues and collaborators for life!
@Emily_Baughan
I'm not doing any more outreach or public engagement work. It is not in my contract and I am not paid to be an ambassador for the university encouraging more young people into the HE pipeline.
Important career progression slide which stops me panicking when I feel so behind and unaccomplished comparing my work as an individual to that of a whole group. Also good to see 12 years spent as a postdoc.
This was an insane project to work on! The pressure to get the work flow right with such precious samples, and the speed with which everything had to happen may have induced pipetting related nightmares 😵 High fives to the massive team involved 🙌🏼
Love this thread- looking for a postdoc who can independently Google, bakes good brownies, and hasn't been so broken by the system that they are willing to carry on and adequately deliver this project to publication somewhere 🤣
My dream when I am finally a PI is to advertise for postdocs using witheringly plain language instead of the normalised false exceptionalism.
Not soon enough can I tweet 'looking for serviceable postdocs of modest talent and existent motivation levels'. It's what keeps me going.

I grew up in a situation were debt meant hiding from people knocking on your door for payment. Debt of any kind makes me anxious and there is simply no way my 18 yr old self would have gone to uni if it meant acquiring this level of debt regardless, of what "type of debt" it is
