To contribute to a volume edited by one of your fav women Hegelians with this awe Hegelian women lineup is beyond amazing. Special issue: Hegel between Subversion and Resistance,Roma Tre Uni Press. Website had some issues, now fixed.
A book everybody should read at some point. One of the best endings ever of a philosophical work. I read it in Italian of course, but my better half had this version. And the translation by Gregory Elliott is really superb! And what a counter-history it is!
The humiliation these elderly people must feel is for the most of you here unfathomable. They are neither evil nor the bad guys, they are not colonisers and whatever you have been told. Revisionist abomination becoming ever more violent.
In Latvia’s capital Riga, dozens of elderly Russians wait to take a basic Latvian language test, as a proof of loyalty to a country where they have lived for decades. If they fail, they may face expulsion
1. György Lukács died on this day 52 years ago. The greatest Marxist philosopher of the 20th c. and one of the most important Marxist thinkers at all. Man who lived through what for most of us is beyond comprehensible.
No words to tell you how sad I am to learn that Gáspár Miklós Tamás has passed away. One of the greatest intellectuals in Eastern Europe, Marxist turned liberal (even right) turned Marxist. Incredible person, greatest speaker I have ever heard. What a loss.
@sasa_d1m
The difference between you and these people is that most of them were born in this particular country. That being the first and major problem and second, this is ethnically motivated. Third, it is against some very basic human rights conventions. Thanks. By.
@BrankoMilan
politically, all understandable, of course. philosophically she was wrong in pretty much everything and yet is considered a great thinker.
Lukacs diagnosed correctly that fascism requires and systematically works on lowering down all moral criteria to the point of suspending the judgment. Relativism which claims there is no truth, no objectivity and destroys the reality.
My question on Arendt was rhetorical.The point I was making-contra liberal dogma- is that it is not the quality of the work that counts. Which is why so many great Marxists thinkers are condemned while the below average Arendt is glorified.
5. He was clear: we are living at the end of one conjuncture and the closure of all revolutionary horizon. We should behave as if we were in the 19th c. when the workers movement was just being formed. Everything behind and at once in front of us.
@Stanivukovic_D
Unbelievable. Stéphane Séjourné, France's new minister of foreign affairs, essentially said that France wouldn't support the ICJ's decision if it rule against Israel because accusing them of genocide is "crossing a moral threshold" and is "exploiting the notion of genocide for
For me, the 4th of July is Fighter's Day, the day when the Communist Party of Yugoslavia proclaimed and called upon the armed uprising against the nazi and fascist occupiers.
Sretan nam 4. juli, Dan boraca!
U Bosni satra sekularizam. Ne moš ga ni na kapaljku dobit.
@JeanneMorefiel1
I agree that there are brilliant flashes. I like her work on Kant's CJ. But most of the time she is superficial, no philosophical nuances and her political conclusions are in fact deeply conservative. To say liberal is to be extremely charitable, I think.
I am deeply fascinated by the myth (repeated as unquestionable truth) created (mostly) by Western academia: namely that the *actual* cause of the First World War is the shot fired by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo 1914.
Happy B-day Spinoza! Excerpt from the letter in which Spinoza, barely making ends meet, refused the job at the University of Heidelberg; when his friends were killed and the Orange dynasty came to power, jeopardising his life and libertas filosofandi. 1.
One of my favorite East European intellectuals. He was in such a good mood here.
I don't think Tamas gets the recognition he deserves as a Marxist. One of the greatest living of our time.
Lukács was 38 when he published HCC. To call that "young Lukács" is nuts• He was 69 when he published the Destruction of Reason and 71 when in 1956 he stood on the barricades again. Greatest Marxist philosopher of the XX c.
Basically, the relationship of Hitler’s fascists to Hegel’s philosophy is very simple: they resolutely reject it.
-Georg Lukács, Hegel and the Nazis (1943)
2. He was 71 when he took part in the Hungarian revolution in 1956. He found refuge in the Yugoslav embassy and refused to rant on his comrades. His party membership was taken away from him and he was ostracised from public life.
Judith Butler can, Amira Hass can, Gideon Levi can, Ofer Cassif can (last three live in Israel), numerous others can, but it is beyond German intellectuals and of course media and political mainstream who brought the world into this mess we are in.
Philosopher & gender studies scholar Judith Butler calls to end Israel's assault in Gaza.
"We should all be standing up and objecting and calling for an end to genocide," says Butler, who recently joined dozens of Jewish writers & artists calling on Biden to demand a ceasefire.
A random tweet on Hannah Arendt went nuts. Perhaps all the liberal academia should reply to this question: Arendt at one point says that totalitarianism is the absence of politics. Do we then by her and by extension your standards live in totalitarianism?
1. Yugoslav Women's Antifascist Front (AFŽ) was formally founded on this day exactly 80 years ago. 🧵
The organisation was part of the Yugoslav popular front policy and was subordinated to the CPY throughout its existence (1942-1953).

of course not. nothing can. but it should make you think how is that prior to the Russian aggression NYT and most mainstream outlets were writing about the serious problem with nazism existing in Ukraine and suddenly overnight nazis are no longer nazis?
One of the greatest passages from Capital, Vol I. For all those who claim Marx was insensitive to colonialism and slavery- he was not. What he was interested however was to understand it in a much wider framework.
It happened. Lukacs and the Destruction of Reason, long overdue, the effort and merit of

The 18th Brumaire, probably the best and certainly my fav text written by Marx. No economy, no economism, possibly a bit of sociology, but mostly just politics. And it is Marx I much prefer. Good morning to you too.

for the same reason Arendt isn't. Cold war ideology masquerading as philosophy. and the idea that he is most famous for (negative and positive liberty) isn't even his either.
3.He patiently waited and was very happy to receive the party card again. In 1968, the old Lukács gives an interview, one of the last ones, where he expresses his judgment on the 1968 and in general about the conjuncture.
6. To celebrate his work, today I chose this:
"...By regarding Chateaubriand and his consorts as the literary successors of Werther, bourgeois literary history tendentiously reduces the book's significance..."
4. Contra what many at the time thought, namely that 1968 was a "general rehearsal for a world revolution", Lukács, taught by the immense experience was more cautious.
7. "...Not reactionary Romanticism, but the great writers of the tragic decline of humanistic ideals in the nineteenth century, Balzac and Stendahl, continued the real tendencies of Werther..."
Trinaest, a možda i više kolumni Dragana Bursaća u naslovu sadrži riječ "silovanje".
I think one of the reasons why I feel so old is because I was raised in the tradition of Marxism which today seems to be almost extinct and no more. It's like being a fish with a memory of a dinosaur. I think I might need to consult a therapist at some point.
Communist Manifesto- one of the most read and translated books ever- was published exactly 175 years ago (21 February 1848). It changed the world,the way we think of and write about politics. Its message and its might still stand over us.
I just want to say again that being a Marxist is difficult and probably quite damaging to a career these days, but it is rewarding as few things are. Am so happy I had the opportunity to talk about G.M. Tamas and Daniel Bensaid with Stathis Kouvelakis.
American military jets flew over Sarajevo today, low altitude, in case the everyday psychosis was not enough. All in "support of peace, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina".Peace kept by military planes, boy did they make us happy.
The strategy of the European right and right in general is to now "trade" off their historic anti-semitism for islamophobia in yet another apparition of West vs. monsters. Of course, this does not mean that they are no longer anti-semitic, au contraire.
I would like to ask:
what is the difference between the "Eastern" oligarchs (who are also billionaires) and "Western" billionaires (who are also oligarchs) if both fund mostly right-wingers worldwide?
Colonialism is:
One out of three light bulbs in France is powered by uranium from Niger.
Over 80% of the population of Niger do not have access to electricity.
On this day the army forces under the Serbian control heavily bombed and destroyed the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 80% of fundus burned, rare Ottoman and other manuscripts. Librarian Aida Buturović lost her life saving books.
Bloch was 33 when he published the Spirit of Utopia.
Lukacs was 38 when he published History and Class Consciousness.
I am between these years (not much, but still) and just made a home panna cotta. How sad is that. Precariousness in the 21 century.
Žižek being fantastically dishonest and racist. Yes, we from former Yugo know all about his lack of principles and opportunism so we are not exactly surprised like people in the West seem to be discoverning hot water.
False. It used to be: the leftists do not distinguish between the terrorist PLO and Gazans, b. terrorists poets and Gazans, b. Hamas and Gazans. When they do not resist they are victims, if and when they do they are monsters. Limits of liberal universalism.
Leftists are failing to distinguish between Hamas and the Gazans in their analysis of the horrors that happened on Saturday.
In doing so, they reinforce Israel‘s line and justification for its crimes to come. This is morally disgraceful and politically stupid.
Toni Negri provided the last great hypothesis of the left- despite divergencies. Far from my tradition, but it meant much to many. Empire was the book which signalled a generation and a movement, but Constituent Power and Political Descartes remain my faves.

Mario Tronti, one of the intellectual founders of the Italian operaismo died. Incredible life,incredible mind- Marxist theory is indebted to Tronti in various ways even if and when we come from the opposing sides. One of the last great hypothesis of the left!
1. Marx on reading Auguste Comte:
"I am studying Comte on the side because the British and French make so much fuss over th at fellow. W hat captivates them is the encyclopaedic form, the synthesis. But compared with Hegel it is wretched
Love the poster, love that it's happening, kinda regret it not being in person, but hey, with this poster, has to be great. Why is Hegel our contemporary, via Riedel and Esposito, let's Hegel some more.
Lukács' 1938 "The Young Hegel" is the most important book about Hegel written in the XX century (published 1948). ALL Hegel scholarship after either followed its footsteps or criticised it. One of the most important scholarly achievements of the XX c .
Person XY to me: have you, as Eastern European, ever felt culturally inferior after moving to West?
Me: seriously? No, never. Because I am a Marxist and not a whining and in principle hierarchy (racial, cultural u name it) oriented liberal.
@HindHassanNews
that is standard. if you are from the former Eastern bloc countries they ask you whether you or any of your family members were nazi or communists.
Exactly 30th rejection since my PhD in Jan 2021. Of course, it's nothing personal.🤡I have an edited volume, several publications (not A list Anglo jour, but still), book chapters, more forthcoming, public writing, speak 5 languages and it's not good enough.

Just finished this- my first coffee read. Such a fantastic review of Ludovico Silva's "Marx's Literary Style" (Verso 2023) . I just want to add that in former Yugoslavia this book was translated way back in 1978.
The EU freezing the humanitarian aid for Gaza is one of the most sinister and disgusting acts and such an image of our times. Freezing aid is the abandonment of all ideals the EU usually brags about. But in the words of Borel, the jungle deserves no better.

In this dark night, in the defeat of humanity, my country Bosnia and Herzegovina was on the side of humanity during the UN vote. Not much, not even an ounce, but let it be remembered.
What we are seeing is the universalisation of war crime. Instead of preventing, the whole world is inciting and cheering. Literal universalisation of war crime. Abominable for the apocalypse beyond good and evil.
Habermas has spoken. Better if he didn't.
Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways. The point, HOWEVER, is to know when not to interpret.
Germans to the front, it seems.
Because u get it,the peoples of the Balkans are incapable of irony, we only understand bombshells.This cover is so wrong, so colonial mind. Bet ya there was a man somewhere along the line who thought he was being really brilliant- now, that is an irony.

I regret to inform you but the demand to decolonise academia will have to start with finding, recognising and paying homage to scholars who have not written or published in English and whose work has not been translated. First necessary step for healing.
Brace yourselves.
@DanielTutt
is doing a podcast with me about themes you all want to hear about, most important of all being: how to be a Marxist today? There will be much Lukacs, of course. Looking forward and forward again 🤌🥰
None of this is helping the Ukranian cause. To the contrary, the US is creating a monster nobody, not even they will be able to control. But the US knows this, this is why they keep insisting. Disgusting, revisionist and dangerous. Very dangerous.
Eighty-two years ago, Nazis murdered 34,000 Jews at Babyn Yar. Soviets buried this history, which today Putin's government manipulates to provide cover for Russia's abuses in Ukraine. The U.S. is committed to justice for Holocaust survivors and accountability for atrocities.
The first philosophy trip my baby will go to is Rome, insallah.All roads lead to Rome.Panel on Lukács for the World Congress of Philosophy. I will be presenting with Matthew Smetona,Rüdiger Dannemann and Giorgio Cesarale (UNIVE).Immensely grateful to Giorgio.
And so on. Italy: members of the far right extremist group CasaPound, now fascist militias, brutally attacked members of the Moroccan community in Verona. Nota bene: the current Italian MP said "they were not xenophobes".

I see some people calling Matveev "russian imperialist" because of this. Utter nonsense from war mongering machinery. And no, having zillion baseless banana states just to suit the interests of the US is not decolonisation. It's imperialist to the core.
The idea of "decolonizing" Russia by dismantling it keeps re-appearing in various public spaces. There are many dishonesties and omissions in this debate. I will focus on one of them.

Slogan of the first international feminist conference "Drug-ca" held in former Yugoslavia. Belgrade, 1978.
Proletarians of the world, who washes your socks?
After the bombing itself, this is the image of shame. He decided to post this just after the Gaza hospital bombing. No words. Scholz following here the worst tradition of his party. Ebert and Noske would be proud. And don’t blame the people when AfD wins.
Brutal terror. The execution of defenseless civilians. Murdered infants, abducted children. Humiliated Holocaust survivors. It makes our blood run cold.
Israel has the right to defend itself against this. A state has a duty to protect its citizens.
The world is allowing Palestinians to be erased. And then, those left, selected carefully, will be taken around the world to talk about human rights in youth camps and human rights workshops and given scholarships to study trauma. I hate this world atm.
I had the opportunity and honour to read the book while it was still a manuscript. All I can say is: read the book, it is beautifully written, important, readable and above all an important political intervention.
No wonder humanities are collapsing into the "I" perspective: confessional tone in literature and criticism, epistemology in philosophy, first person writing of history etc when almost every position advertised is: the "I" has to obtain third party funding.
Turkey, Italy,Germany, UK, Croatia, France, Netherlands, US-just name it. Is there one country where election campaigns are based on anything other than anti-immigration and anti asylum seekers policies? It's like a bad movie and we are led into the abyss.

Writing something and fondly remembering the times when we translated Macherey's "Le sujet productif" in English. One of the best essays about Foucault and beyond, ever at all.
How many rejections before it is reasonable to say: ok, you invested over 20 years of life, did it the hard way, bcs life, learned more than several languages, but "cruel optimism" has to stop. Life beyond academia, oh the liberation, and I am tired.
"Still I would like to spend the next, if I am optimistic 10 to 15 years, in at least a morally bearable society that at least tries to resist, even if it doesn't win. That's the minimum". Gáspár Miklós Tamás, in an interview 3 years ago.

The sight of nouveau riche at the airports is man, they look alike everywhere. Makes one miss the old bourgeoisie with style. These people look so dull and alike, like serial dolls.
Nobody in their right mind supports Hamas. And indeed, most of these people probably do not. The argument however is elsewhere: understanding that this comes as a reaction to decades of islamophobia, violence, murder, torture and being spat on.
My social media channels show too many decolonial colleagues celebrating Hamas violence as Palestinian anticolonial resistance. They seem undisturbed or don't comment on the hostages, children and the elderly murdered, sexual violence, female corpses undressed, paraded, spat on.
Jean Luc Melenchon and Jeremy Corbyn both present in the Netherlands to support the charge of genocide against Israel by South Africa. The new politics must focus on their opposition to this rotten system. Together we will build a new political movement.
