For a long time there was something I was seeking out of life, something I couldn’t name but felt must exist outside the realm of worldly ambition and desire. I recently retraced my steps to Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha, where I finally found what I was looking for. August is monsoon season in Kathmandu. I was frequently caught in spontaneous torrential downpours, rainfall almost heavy enough to wash away my sins. I’d come here to learn vipassana, an ancient meditation technique which I’d heard could alleviate suffering. During my vipassana I meditated for 140 hours in 10 days. I was up from 4am until 9pm in the evenings to meditate in silence, feeling breath after breath. The space in between craving and aversion is still. There is beauty in stillness, power in stillness. Clarity. Understanding the truth of one’s life experiences while walking the eightfold noble path is as close to nirvana as we can come on earth. I’d encourage everyone to attend a 10-day vipassana retreat, which are offered for free all around the world at Nepal, you’ve been so kind to me. I have loved getting to know you. Thank you for everything 🇳🇵
