@ScienceMagazine @BAS_News @paleo_dyn @AWI_Media Climate modelling results suggest that Antarctic ice sheet growth and the resultant Southern Ocean sea ice expansion caused global cooling and northward shift of tropical rain belt. This prompts rapid growth of the NH ice sheet, eventually triggering the MPT.

@ScienceMagazine @BAS_News @paleo_dyn @AWI_Media SH ice volume experiences long-term growth from 2.0 to ~1.3 Ma, prior to the onset of the MPT when NH ice volume variability commenced its shift to 100-kyr cycle. At ~0.9 Ma, NH ice volume for the first time dominated global ice volume changes during glacials.

@ScienceMagazine @BAS_News @paleo_dyn @AWI_Media We compiled Northern and Southern mid-latitude SST records to reconstruct bipolar ice sheet volume by developing a transfer function between them, and then evaluated age uncertainties of SST-based ice volumes by Monte Carlo simulations.
