My baby sister has left this earth at age 54. An attorney, she loved opera, Colombian literature, Tai Chi, sushi, cats (although allergic), & writing (like her big brother). In her honor, go live big, love even bigger, laugh at the wind, and dance. Mucho. I promise to.

Mom was just brought to the ER with pneumonia and super low blood oxygen. Doctor says he thinks it is Covid--results later. Kidney functions slightly abnormal. Heart a concern. She is 79. If I have ever helped you any way, I am calling for prayers (and Rich is not religious).

Update sister's cancer journey (thank you for caring). She now sleeps 22 hours/day (ish) & perhaps has weeks left, but who knows. Since phone and video are out for her, I said my goodbyes two weeks ago, in LA. I am at peace, but am so sad for my parents--losing a kid-the worst.

The truth is, my sister's cancer, and soon-to-be-death, has been the biggest push toward my big life/career change. It is a risk, giving up a tenured position that I truly have loved, but at 58, I must follow my heart, my calling, what is special to and about me.

Update, sis's cancer journey. Largely unresponsive, drinking little, lethargic, listless. Days until the end? She always longed for Cartagena--home of writers she loves. She never made it. Next week, I go to Colombia. Dance salsa, celebrate being alive, to Cartagena, for her.

I was the keynote at a large conference in Bangkok. I thought I was taking my blood pressure meds, but took an ambien. it was all, shall I say, a wee bit blurry. I was told I presented very well. Reminded me of qualudes in the 80s.

Since my loss is going viral, I will take this moment to ask you to send condolences by supporting one of these lovely organizations. My sister loved animals and even $5 could safe a life. The thought of those giving to cute beasts in her name warms my heart.

I have taught online for 15 years. The best piece of advice I can give is keep it simple. Don't be seduced by fetishization of technology. No fancy tools for the sake of its use. Technology serves pedagogy. If a tool helps you meet your aim, it is awesome.

I am sorry to all who felt my attempting to explore the concept of mansplanning was in fact an example of it, and was not respectful of women's lived experience. Perhaps this was a poor space to attempt to engage in such a discussion, and perhaps I did not do so artfully.

No sense of awareness of the multitude of methodologies that exist, and how many of them would require RAs. Ableist as hell too-- were I not able to have knee replacements and can now walk, should I have quit my faculty position, or would RAs been ok? Breath. Reflect. Sleep. Post

Anyone who asserts you need to cut back on sleep, exercise, or life has not not learned excellent academic productivity skills. Period. Only very few of even the most successful scholars have attended to their processes sufficiently. THAT is why we have a MH crisis-not the work.
In my first year of grad school, I was convinced I was Doing It Wrong because I kept a regular sleep schedule and couldn't participate in the "I only got X hours of sleep last night" competitive misery thing some of my classmates did. Nope!

I set a preselected amount of time per paper/assignment per student. That is the time, and then I focus on two actionable things to work on and three strenghts. Giving more feedback than that overwhelmes them and they don't do anything with it.

I am sorry, but this is horrible. I get over 100 emails a day, and many from people asking me for things that I cannot do, or need to consider over time. If one is experiencing anxiety that is an issue. The culture of immediacy is the problem here. This is why I don't text. Ever.
Dear Academics, we need to do better when it comes to email. We need to promptly respond to emails. It is not right to go more than 24 hours without an email response. The anxiety un-replied emails cause is anguish. We can do better.

As of today, my current list of degrees should read: Rich Furman, MFA(C), MSW, PhD . I am two months away from fulfilling this bucket list goal, my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction. Age 53. I will cry like the big, muscly baby that I am when I can drop the "C".

An update is in order, since I have written about it before here. My sister's Glioblastoma (terminal brain cancer) has progressed a great deal. Confusion, disorientation, hard time understanding and thinking. The worst is knowing my folks will lose a child. Love & hug your peeps.

Today, I passed 5000 citations (not horrible for social work). Nothing earth shattering, but fun to think about 5000 peeps checking out my work. Even more I like having an i10 index of 80, it means some of my obscure things were read, at least cited, lol.

Have a favor of ask you, prof. Can you stop telling students they are bad writers? Instead of marking every error in their papers (which takes too much time anyhow), point out or or two actionable things they can work on, i.e. dangly modifiers, comma usage. Shame is not pedagogy.

Came to campus today-really not wanting to teach. Just not feeling it-wish I could stay home and cuddle doggies ( wa wa professor 2 classes a term!!). Run into a former student who thanked me for all all she learned from me, two years ago. Just what I needed! Now, good to go!
