The very first otome game that defined the genre was a strategy game made by a woman ran team founded by Keiko Erikawa, who wanted to make engaging video games for women/girls.
Dating pretty boys is the hook! But not the limit to gameplay features of this genre. Never was.

It is crucial that visual novels are seen as a VALID form of video gaming in the greater gaming community. Visual novels which have established and exalted features present in so many forms of video games, deserve respect themselves. As do their developers.

I think this is an important example of why reviews should be exactly that - reviews, not personal rants. If you despise a certain thing and yet go out of your way to obtain that thing, you are simply forcing yourself to consume media you hate so that you can say "I hate it".

If the game is paid or free to play, if it is a solo dev or a team, if the protagonist is gendered, bootstrap or invested, whatever.
Making games is hard enough. Instead, celebrate indies.

It's not about the trends. It's not about the tropes. It's about genuine characters, worlds and stories women can relate to. Ppl can tell when it's just a "chicks like that kinda stuff" marketing ploy. 💗

There is value in every trope/ archetype as a love interest. The only time it doesn't work is when there isn't enough character development, unhealthy behavior is glossed over or glorified as acceptable, and/or the character is irredeemable to a believable romance.

Another thing about indie otome I personally I love: seeing dev and dev team journeys and rooting for their progress. I do this with friends who are game devs, but as a fan of the genre, it's amazing to see people talking about making the games I am hype to play 🥰❣️❣️❣️

Do I believe there is an inequality in perception of value based on a game's origin and base language? Yes.
We won't play like this isn't an issue in the community. It's just one I don't play into.

Demos created at jams don't usually get played as much as completed games do. Download numbers may reflect that.
It doesn't mean a game demo isn't great! But a lot of gamers have mixed feelings about playing demos.

Harassment in the form of threats and doxxing is not the way to handle concerns or issues players have with a game. Indie game devs generally make efforts to make changes and updates that will make a game enjoyable not just for them but their audiences.
