Last fall, the US #DOE wrote an article about the 1st place winners for #outreach at the #Marine_Energy and Hydropower Collegiate Competitions, the former being our Purdue team with K-12 water wheel competitions, education kits, and more!

We developed a liquid-like polymer lubricant layer on a #bioinspired bumpy surface, fabricated with SLM 3D printing. Droplets grow faster at bump apexes and shed rapidly via ultralow #CAH (<3°), greatly enhancing #Atmospheric #Water #Harvesting!

We published a pair of modeling papers on electrocatalytic self-pumping membranes. Flow in such pores is heavily influenced by pore radius and pH, and less so by porosity, pore length, tortuosity, and pore defects.

Our team’s #SWRO study in @Joule_CP shows that using the most #efficient #tech (Batch #reverse_osmosis, better #pumps, spacers, #membranes, etc) can reduce total #energy by 57%, eliminating 82% of the excess energy above the #thermodynamic minimum.

We've had a fortunate October for fundraising, receiving grants we led from the #DOE and #ONR, Purdue CHPB, and two company projects. Most of those who contributed to these celebrated with a cookie cake.

We demonstrated an “Electroless” #membrane #coating process that uses #catalysis of silver ions (rather than electrodeposition) to coat Copper #nanoparticles. The antimicrobial coatings were exceptionally uniform and robust on electrospun PAN membranes.

We developed a performance framework for #photocatalytic #oxidation air treatment in #HVAC systems to remove #bioaerosols. We found that #parallel_plate geometries outperform #honeycombs, and that improper geometries limit most commercial systems

Our team modeled enhancing #filtration with standing #acoustic waves. Capture efficiency improves >100X for the most difficult particle sizes, and is largely due to acoustic radiation and acoustic streaming, which were not previously considered.

Our team developed a framework for beneficial #groundwater #desalination #brine #reuse for #agricultural applications that are #environmentally_friendly. Our sampling across #Kenya, found that #salinity and boron most limit reuse for crops and livestock

We modeled the first semibatch and batch low-salt-rejection #reverse_osmosis processes to reach #high_salinity. The batch variant consumes 38-73% less energy than conventional #LSRRO process and is more flexible and far more efficient than semibatch RO.
