Rather than letting my bits of advice for #gamedev fall into the void, I've put together a thread for them that I'll keep updated every time I post something new. Caveat: I'm not actually a dev, just a broadcaster with years of experience at promoting new indie games.

Just a casual reminder that D&D isn't the only viable Tabletop RPG on the market. In fact, I'd argue that there are tons of better ones that will fit your preferences way better than D&D! To help you find one worth trying, I've made a easy 🧵for you!

Pathfinder/Starfinder: - are the closest possible analogue, as they're based on 3.5e D&D but have grown into their own over the last ~15 years. The rules & customization options are even crunchier than D&D, but I personally love that kind of stuff.

Indie Devs: do not follow this approach unless you've already released one or multiple wildly successful games. Surprise releasing games works when you're a big studio with some clout and the game is fantastic. Hi-Fi Rush could have easily doomed the studio if it wasn't so good.

Hot take: Roguelike Deckbuilders take WAY TOO LONG to beat. I love the genre, but sinking 2+ hours into every run just doesn't feel good anymore. Especially since the last ~40 minutes are usually the hardest, most punishing fights of a run. Turns it into a boring unfun slog.

In Mike's defense, paying creators for coverage IS icky. Game coverage is 'better' when it's organic, and while buying videos/streams will guarantee that they happen- it also makes them feel less genuine. On the flip side, sponsorships are becoming increasingly necessary.

Judging by today's discourse over what counts as an indie game, every publisher should spin up their own sub-studios and start having them self-publish their own games as "indie". Heck, I suppose Baldur's Gate 3 counts as an indie game now. They're independent after all.

I got some clarifications from Unity regarding their plan to charge developers per game install (after clearing thresholds) - If a player deletes a game and re-installs it, that's 2 installs, 2 charges - Same if they install on 2 devices - Charity games/bundles exempted from fees

I can somewhat understand Arkane Austin since Redfall hollowed that studio out, but Tango Gameworks??? Hi-Fi Rush was a AA darling last year that could really have set the stage for Microsoft starting to release authentically creative, mid budget games. And they just axed them?

Thanks @devolverdigital for the lovely shirt & birthday invite! I can't see a thing at the moment, but once I can I'll be able to understand what people keep giggling about today.

I know this has already gotten a fair bit of backlash, but I might as well echo it anyway: in a year where thousands of developers have been laid off from their jobs- actively using or promoting products that will invariably lead to more layoffs is insultingly tone deaf.

I'm just gonna start retweeting every cool game that goes by on my feed. This one looks neat. No clue what it's about, but the ambiance is solid and I love that bridge design.

It really makes my day to wake up to comments like these. I know YouTube comments sections have a reputation for being terrible, but mine has been particularly kind lately.

Seeing as the discourse of the day has turned into: all Gaming YouTubers = Reviewers- I hate to say it but we're more like living billboards. Most of the stuff we showcase pro-bono, but some is paid for. It's 100% sell-out behavior, but it's how we keep the lights on. 1/12

In Mike's defense, paying creators for coverage IS icky. Game coverage is 'better' when it's organic, and while buying videos/streams will guarantee that they happen- it also makes them feel less genuine. On the flip side, sponsorships are becoming increasingly necessary.

@shingpapi Often yeah. I regularly sift through new releases for games to cover, and it's not uncommon to find a halfway decent game with zero reviews, minimal to zero marketing, and no developer presence on any kind of social media to speak of.

@Zeredek Because they're out of touch with reality and think that even if they cook their golden goose, eat it, and then toss the carcass into someone else's dumpster- it'll still keep laying eggs for them somehow. Chances are they'll try to monetize 3rd party homebrew again too.

Someday I will make a game, and people will unironically recommend it to me to make a video on. I will laugh, but internally I will despair.

2023 has been weirdly unique in that there are so many fantastic looking games that I want to cover that I actually cannot find the time to do so. It's a very first-world problem, but I honestly get kinda stressed out looking at the 20+ new games in my inbox every morning.

Streamers have been lumped in under the influencer job description for a very good reason. Our words matter, as do the values we present. If we do not speak out against racism/WP, that means we're tolerant of them, and that's not okay. Evil is emboldened by tolerance.

The sheer amount of damage this one company has done to mid-sized studios and niche IPs is staggering. I know this is just corpo speak to try to keep their stock prices from nosediving, but even if they recover their reputation is toast.

Just tried out Baladins with my partner earlier tonight and had a lovely time with it! They perfectly distilled what makes adventure games feel so good alongside a ton of narrative charm. Probably the best date night game I've played in a long while.

Last year I decided to unsub from every streaming service, start only watching movies & shows through my local library, and buy the ones I like/liked in the past. Every day I feel validated that I made the right choice, but I'm also already running out of shelf space.

Damn, the Twitch leaks really do confirm what I already knew: the pay is absolute dogshit. I'm apparently the 5086th best paid streamer on the platform, and I get paid way less than minimum wage. Twitch revenue doesn't become 'liveable' till your in the top 1000 or higher.

Huge vouch for this demo. There aren't a whole lot of non-sidescroller metroidvanias in the world, and Crypt Custodian is clear evidence that the genre can work quite well in other perspectives! Plus cute cats are always a plus.

As an artist myself, I cannot in good conscience cover games that use generative models, and I've had to crank my "do not cover" filters up dramatically to protect myself now that AI is everywhere. So if I know who to trust beforehand, it's way easier to choose who to feature.

After years of writing & scrapping scripts, I finally have a game review that I'm happy enough with to post! So for my first actual, proper game review, I'll be checking out COCOON, a game that's so intuitive that I barely remember playing it (in a good way)!
