The last 23 elk from the Land Between the Lakes NRC in Kentucky arrived at the Tomblin WMA IN Logan County today to become permanent West Virginia wildlife.
BREAKING: U.S. Senator Joe Manchin announces the USPS has canceled its plan to move the Charleston Mail Processing Facility to Pittsburgh and the operation will remain intact.
My buddy Steve Shaluta is a talented photographer who has snapped more fall foliage pics than anybody can count in WV. I couldn't resist "stealing" and sharing this one with you today---it's not current, but it's a beauty of Seneca Rocks.

My brother once RECORDED the local DJ reading school closings o. Radio....played it back on another day when things were “iffy”. It worked...except my mom was a teacher and principal called to see why she missed work. Did not end well for us.

I grabbed this cool video while riding along with the WV DNR for a story about trout stocking from the railroad between Durbin and Cass. This is the boneyard for the Cass Scenic Railroad. Boy, if these relics could talk--they could tell some stories.
The Kanawha County Public Library in Charleston will reopen in May after a multi-Million dollar renovation to its main branch. Part of the new area will be a place where you can "check out" tools. This is an ultra great idea...I just hope people return them and appreciate it.

I visited here today….it was harder to get through than I expected. Hit me even harder than the NYC memorial when I visited there. Common folks….who did uncommon things….on the spur of the moment.
Had to share this picture captured at Prickett's Fort State Park this week by good friend of the show Joey Herron. Awesome shot of an osprey who caught a keeper from the Monongahela River.
There's been a lot of talk about the pending demolition of the old Hooters in Charleston. My buddy Rodney Loftis has the contract for the job and exercised his option in that position to salvage and create what is without question the greatest man cave decoration in history.
I just spent 8 hours on a tractor back on the farm. I cannot tell you the level of inner peace and relaxation that creates. Plus I retook parts of the place from the multi-floral roses. I think Daddy is looking down with an “Atta boy”. At least I like to think so.
Never could have dreamed a farm boy from Lee Co, Va. would someday be on a stage at Gotham Hall at a Gala event in New York City accepting an award...but there I was. What a moment.

A suggestion for everybody who has a kid home from school..why not use the time and teach them to change a tire, or the oil. Perhaps explain how a light switch is wired or sharpen a lawn mower blade. It's stuff that I promise will be useful down the road...
I need to give a BIG thank-you this morning to a couple of old boys from the

Right about 4am, on I-64 in Cross Lanes--amid a mix of snow and rain I had a flat tire--and the lug wrench broke. They stopped and helped me out..otherwise I'd still be there. Thanks Guys.

I post this picture to pay tribute Captain Stallings. His son, my late friend "Cadillac" Jim Stallings used to post it in honor of his dad. But now that he's gone, I've made it my mission to see to it he's remembered each year for his sacrifice. 🇺🇸
It dawned on me this week that this month marked 27 years I've been hosting West Virginia Outdoors on Saturday morning. Hopefully I've improved a little since that first one on April 1, 1994...and many thanks to those stations who carry the show and all of those who listen.
I've always wondered why anybody would break into a coal mine to pull copper cable, when the company is willing to pay you $30+/hour with benefits to do it with safeguards in place....but maybe I am overthinking things.
This arrived in the mail this week. I continue to be humbled, honored, and in disbelief this is actually real. Radio folks will know just how big a deal this is. Thanks to all of you who listen every time I open the mic--because without you--I have no career.
This is the bridge

will work the evening shift. The Arkwright Mine will work the evening shift. Humphrey will not work the evening shift.”
I'm not a fan of the Chiefs or the 49rs...but I'll be pulling for San Francisco--because my hunting buddy

is starting at right tackle. We've shot ducks together..and where I'm from, that means something. Go Niners!!!!!

A conversation with a friend has reminded me that God has given me many blessings, one of the biggest was having no cell phones or YouTube when I was young and stupid.
A coworker gave me this microwave in Nov. 1990 when I was first hired at WV Radio. She bought it in the 80s. It’s designed to be commercial…to heat gas station burritos and such. This week it finally stopped working after 40+ years. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

If my late longtime friend and co-worker Jim Stallings were alive today, he would be posting something about is dad, James Stallings who was killed in Vietnam. Since Jim is no longer here, I'll do it for him.

Today marks 5 years since I had a chew of tobacco. I chewed for close to 35 years and gave it up cold turkey. I still crave it at times. If you use tobacco and want to quit, keep trying. If you don't use tobacco, stop preaching at those who do and get off your high horse.

Today is the 75th Anniversary of WV native Chuck Yeager's famous flight to break the sound barrier. What this report doesn't tell you is he did it with broken ribs from a horseback riding incident a day earlier--which he declined to tell superiors.

We recorded a conversation for WV Outdoors covering his upbringing in WV, is war service and test piloting, but mostly, we talked hunting and fishing. We will replay the show Saturday on WV Outdoors.
There are very few things more satisfying to hear than the “tink” of a jar sealing. It’s almost like it’s saying, “I’ll meet you back here in January when there is snow on the ground.”

Former President Jimmy Carter broke his hip while turkey hunting this week (which reporters called turkey "shooting"--insert eye roll here) Regardless of your political feelings on the man--I just hope we are ALL fortunate enough to be turkey hunting at age 94.
Allow me to introduce you to Gracie, the Blue Tick Bass Hound on the Tug Fork River which we referenced in our conversation on WV Outdoors this morning with John Burchett.
