My first D&D book I ever saw was one I found in the library as a kid. A monster manual. It had a white cover and color art, which probably means it was 2e. I had no idea what any of the numbers and tables meant but the art was really cool.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think there is value in a basic, tropey, kitchen sink fantasy setting like Forgotten Realms. Everyone gets the tropes at this point. There's plenty of room still to add your own stuff while also having identifiable landmarks. Roll up a character.
