Apollo 1 Crew Tribute – January 27, 1967 On January 27, 1967, astronauts Roger B. Chaffee, Edward H. White, and Virgil I. Grissom tragically lost their lives during a pre-flight test for the Apollo 1 mission. The fire that engulfed their capsule highlighted critical safety flaws in the spacecraft’s design. This incident, though tragic, led to significant safety improvements in space exploration, ultimately contributing to the success of the Apollo programme, including the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. ©NASA

Thank you for your message! Neil Armstrong spoke those words on July 21, 1969, UTC (the time used in official records), but in the United States’ Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), it was still late evening on July 20, 1969, the same day as the landing. Both dates are correct, depending on the time zone referenced.
