It was clearly the direction, snyder seemed to be obsessed with the cool quiet godlike protagonist for superman, I refuse to believe cavill couldn't have played a good superman w a better script, the scream after he kills zod (and then desperately hugging lois) was great acting.

Isn't that a mark of a great writer? Hal Jordan had a great arc going from GL to evil hal to spectre and all of it is undone by Johns but it was so fun and well written that some people still think it was the right thing to do. Best writers do what they want and people like them.
