paper "Spatial transcriptomics of dorsal root ganglia identifies molecular signatures of human nociceptors" is now online, and we got the cover! Congrats to the whole team. We hope you enjoy the read!
Let this sink in - "~119 applications from white PIs with scores in the 35th–59th percentile range were funded versus zero applications from Black PIs with scores in the same range."
Today I am officially taking over as Editor-in-Chief of Neurobiology of Pain - . I am lucky to stand on the shoulders of my mentor and friend Fernando Cervero in taking on this role. I am also lucky to have
@mike_doc_B
joining as Deputy Editor.
I was surprised this morning when I arrived to an empty room for lab meeting. About two minutes later everyone walked in dressed up as “Ted”. So fun and hilarious. Here we all are later in the afternoon. I’m so lucky to work with these amazing, fun loving scientists.
I didn’t think I’d be lucky enough to have him fall asleep laying on my chest again. If this is the last time I’m gonna document it so I don’t forget. They grow up way too fast!
Which paper gets your vote for paper of the year in pain? This is my choice. A masterpiece from Rohini Kuner that completely changed the way I think about animal models of pain and how touch becomes pain in neuropathies.
Just found out that Greg has now been promoted to Full Professor. Greatly deserved promotion for my partner in crime. Y'all know Greg is not on social media, but I promise to send him a telegraph with all your congratulatory tweets.
BREAKING NEWS:
The 2021
#NobelPrize
in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”
We will be posting a tenure track position in Neuroscience with a focus on Pain and Sensory Neuroscience in the coming days. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me!
This is such an amazing story of evolutionary neuropharmacology! "Despite their very different, oddly shaped brains, octopuses seem to react to ecstasy just like humans and mice,"

BOOM! Rohini Kuner has done it again. This is just awesome stuff and drives home the point that we are missing the boat studying events that occur early after injury. Its months later where/when the real action occurs.
My wife is getting vaccinated today. She is an absolute hero for what she has done throughout this pandemic. I am so glad she will have a safety net now. I am so glad our whole family will have the safety net. The stress has been crushing for all of us, hardest on her.

and I cannot believe we pulled this off. DRG (on the right) with dorsal root attached (about 4 inches of it) connected to spinal cord (left). Homo sapiens. Labels = our secret
Did you know that another product of pervasive racism is shitty medical care for black people. For instance, black people are less likely to receive any treatment when they are in pain. That is a massive humanitarian failing.
We need to acknowledge these failures and fix them
#COVID19
finally got us. My wife, who is frontline healthcare at UTSW, has a breakthrough infection and now are 3 year old son is infected. Thankfully he is symptom free.

My daughter (6 years old) gave me this lovely navy grenadine tie for my birthday yesterday. She has great taste. Also the big hug and giant smile she gave me this morning when she saw I was wearing it was worth all the money in the world.
We have two tenure track jobs available in Department of Neuroscience. Both labs will be in new space in the BSB building and right next to the brand new

BOOM! I think this is a terrific paper from the
@genentech
pain team (many of whom appear to now be at
@23andMe
) on a topic that is near and dear to my heart: nociceptor transcriptomes and their conservation across species.
This has been the thrill of a lifetime to go from basic research to a molecule that can head toward clinical development. Now onto the next stage! Huge thanks to the

to develop MNK inhibitors for neuropathic pain. We will now begin IND-enabling studies. We are excited to continue our journey to improve the treatment of neuropathic pain!
BOOM! Really impressive discovery of a TrkC+, TH+ set of DRG sensory neurons controlling blood pressure. Losing the neurons causes lethal drop in blood pressure and heart rate variability.
Wife got jab 2 of Pfizer vaccine at 5AM today and Abuelita, Abuelo, Nina and Grandpa Bill all scheduled for jab 1 in next 48 hrs. I believe the term for my current state is “dead chuffed”!!
I have built my career publishing in "society" journals. I am here to tell you it is entirely possible to be very successful with this approach. My focus has been 2 journals -

19 years ago today I married the most wonderful woman on earth. Thank you,
@RMarinesPrice
for a beautiful life so far, and to many, many more Oct 26ths!
I took my 3 year old to get his blood test for the Moderna trial this morning. He was scared and crying, but we sang the ABCs and then when his blood started to come out he yelled "WOW, I like it! I see the antibodies Daddy!!". We all died laughing from the cuteness.
This paper - - the last paper from
@CandlerPaige
's dissertation, is now accepted for publication
@SfNJournals
Journal of Neuroscience. We added a lot to the paper in revision, including convincing evidence that CGRP acts in CNS to promote pain in females.
BOOM! This paper is awesome -
I am so impressed with the clever experimental design. Answers a question I have wondered about for the longest time, in particular because my OA pain is markedly worse at night.
First paper in what I hope will be a long collaboration with the one and only
@IsaacMChiu
and the incredibly talented
@sokol_mdphd
on itch and pain mechanisms - The CysLT2R receptor mediates leukotriene C4-driven acute and chronic itch
Our work on
#CGRP
was featured in the first ever JNeurosci Spotlight Along with a bunch of other awesome papers. Note that 3 of 7 of them are
#pain
papers! Thanks
@JNeuroscience
@SfNJournals
@SfNtweets
for continuing to highlight our work.
Dissected our first DRGs and spinal cord from an organ donor tonight. Quite an experience. Looking forward to making the most of this amazing resource. Thanks
@BryanCopits
for making it possible.
Just had our first paper accepted in Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
#JPET
. I got my PhD in Pharmacology in 2003. Not sure what took so long to hit this milestone, but I am glad we will have a terrific paper in that storied journal.
Today we are entering the next phase of development for our novel, non-opioid pain therapeutic platform.
@CersciThera
has been acquired by Acadia Pharmaceuticals to take over clinical development. A great partnership to transform pain treatment
IDK, if the antibodies were Santa Cruz I’d expect them to recognize all variants + flu and six random other viruses and cause a horrid autoimmune reaction that would cause the screen on your gel imager to show a blobby mess every time you walked by.
Curious about which populations of neurons in the CNS vs. PNS express the greatest diversity of GPCRs, ion channels, or other types of receptors? Us too!! Check out our latest preprint -

Congrats to
@TonyaPalermo
for taking the Editor in Chief position at Journal of Pain. I cannot think of a better choice for this important position, especially in guiding the direction of the journal as the
@US_ASP
grows.
BOOM! This blows my mind and suggests that we are studying completely the wrong thing (or at least time point) in mouse neuropathic pain models in male mice, and are just completely clueless on what is going on in female mice
Got an investigator score of 7 today. Apparently lack leadership and no private sector experience.
Its a lottery, you never know what you are gonna draw so keep writing and submitting the grants. I know it can be beyond frustrating, but eventually your numbers pop up.
congrats
@superkash
and
@nanopharmNC
on a terrific paper . Dopamine and pain, and the fascinating sex differences that come along with it!! Your wonderful work has us thinking about how descending and ascending dopamine might work together in chronic pain.
This paper - - has now been accepted for publication in Brain. Congrats to
