😶What in the world? This larval fish was found in one of our benthic invertebrate samples. It's only about 15mm long but an adult averages around 5-8 inches. They have a brownish mottled deep body with red eyes and a large mouth. Answer to come later. 📷Michael Schindler/USFWS

Never fear, Balthazar the Elder is here. Did you know that several species of buffalo fish can live past 100! Recent research has shown that bigmouth buffalo actually seem to become healthier as they age! Photo by Sam Stukel/USFWS and Illustration by Holly Richards/USFWS

Did you know that we use feathers to help spawn fish in a hatchery? During the pallid sturgeon spawning process, turkey feathers are used to mix the eggs and sperm together. The feathers are strong enough to stir, but soft enough to not damage the eggs. Photo by Sam Stukel/USFWS

A cool species with an unfortunate common names, the bloater. Why the name? When they are brought up to the surface from really deep water their air bladder expands and they're bloated up, so came the name bloater. Photo of a broodstock bloater by USFWS.

🎣Winter fishing anyone? Fish are more sluggish when water temps drop but they’re still looking for an easy meal. Fish slowly, be patient, and be ready when a fish finds your bait. Double check that your fishing license is valid for the new year. Photo: USFWS/Katrina Liebich

If you could live a mostly sedentary lifestyle mud bathing in a riverbed all day, eating whenever you wanted to and cleaning water in the process, would you? You just might be a Purple bean mussel at heart! Purple & yellow morphs of purple bean mussels by Tim Lane/Virginia DWR

I learned something new today!😀The salamander mussel has a unique life cycle that relies on a host for successful reproduction, BUT the salamander mussel is the ONLY freshwater mussel in North America to use a non-fish host. It depends on a mudpuppy. Photos/USFWS
