#UKRetroComp
Drum roll.... We are delighted to announce the finalists for this year's
#RetroComp2019
😀 This year, the judges felt that there were 11 teams that deserve to go to the final, so without further ado....
#RealTimeChem
@SCIUpdate
@RoySocChem
@CRiverLabs
Imperial College London
@impchemistry
@imperialcollege

Thanks to team 'We Found Grubbs in a Hyp(atulone)-less Place', who picked a transannular cyclization across a 10-membered ring onto an epoxide, before finding the Grubbs of their life for an RCM.
#UKRetroComp
We'll be live-tweeting from
#retrosynth2019
throughout the day tomorrow to keep you all updated, so follow us NOW if you haven't already! Good luck to all finalist teams 🍀
Welcome to
#UKRetroComp
! Our first team to present is Trost Me, It Works from
@Pfizer_UK
! They featured a key Diels-Alder and their namesake Tsuji-Trost allylation, to give a total synthesis with 19 LLS sequence. Well done Pfizer! 🙌
#UKRetroComp
Next team "Nickel My Fancy" has some clever base metal-mediated cross-coupling reactions used to build up their main fragments
@UofGChem
@UofGlasgow
#UKRetroComp
Back to it with
@ASTRAZENECAUK
's team AZomethine Assemblers, and a neat concomitant deprotection and double bond reduction to set their last stereogenic centre

The moment you've been waiting for has *nearly* arrived:
#retrosynth2018
final is tomorrow! Many thanks for
@SCIupdate
for secretariat/sponsorship and to
@RoySocChem
for sponsorship through the Organic Division 😀
Audience registration (free!) is now open for the
#retrosynth2019
final! Go to and press the "Join This Event" button at the top of the page to register. Looking forward to seeing you all there 😀
@SCIupdate
@RoySocChem
That's a wrap! Last but not least: team 'You'd Stetter Believe It' with a great Fries rearrangement of dihydrocoumarin, diastereoselective Stetter reaction and a bioinspired radical cascade
#UKRetroComp
Good job team "Reflux And Chill?"! Rubottom oxidation, Wittig, relay RCM, transannular Diels-Alder, reduction with Vaska's complex to set up a Mannich reaction are key steps. 16 steps in longest linear sequence, 8% overall yield.
The final three teams are "Mannich Black" from
@SygnatureDiscov
, "Flower Power" from
@SyngentaCropsUK
and "The Radical Strikes Back" from
@ConceptLSGroup
. Very well done to all teams - we look forward to seeing you at the final 😀
Just over three days to go until
@RetroComp
entries are due! Hope you are all ready, as the judges are looking forward to receiving their work 😃 The top ten teams will be selected to present their forward synthesis at the final

Taking part in this year's National Retrosynthesis Competition?
Tune in and get inspired by 3 of last year's winning teams, in our
#SCIwebinar
at 15:00 BST tomorrow!
Thank you to team 'Cyclopropane and Suffering' from
@UoMChemistry
- strain-release-assisted cyclopropane opening followed by a Diels-Alder and late Dieckmann condensation!
#UKRetroComp
The final team of the morning's session was SynCity 2000 from
@OxfordChemistry
@UniofOxford
They proposed a multiply oxidative cascade to form much of the core of cinnamomol B
#UKRetroComp
Many thanks to
@SygnatureDiscov
for their generous gold sponsorship of this year's
@UKRetroComp
- we are really grateful for your support!
Would YOU like to sponsor us too?! Opportunities still available, contact info at: 😃
And that's a wrap on this year's competition! Congratulations to all winners and finalists. And well done Trost Me It Works from
@Pfizer_UK
!
#UKRetroComp
Good job team "Hold Me Closer Vinyl Dancer"! Key steps include Cu-catalysed enantioselective 1,4-addition, Robinson annelation, Shi epoxidation, intramolecular Tsuji-Trost, photocat oxidative vinylogous Mannich reaction; 23 steps and 1.2% yield
This molecule has since been made 'in real life' by Hanfeng Ding & coworkers. I wonder what similarities there are between the two routes!
#UKRetroComp
Thanks to all teams for submitting your retrosyntheses on Friday 👍 They are now being processed then will go to the judges for their consideration - good luck to all teams!

Taking part in the 2021 National Retrosynthesis Competition?
Before the molecule is released on 28th September, tune into our webinar to see how some of last year's winning teams made their routes!
First team to kick off the competition is The Last Sakurai from
@pfizer
- they bravely chose to embed SELECT criteria & devise a scalable route to phlegmadine C!
#PfizerChemistry
#ukRetroComp
Just over a month until the
#RetroComp2019
submission deadline - how are you all getting on teams?! All info available at , still time to get a team together if you haven't already 😀
@SCIupdate
Just under two weeks until the

submission deadline - feeling the pressure yet??!! All info available at , judges are looking forward to receiving your entries 😀
@SCIupdate
Next we hosted Team If You Like (Semi)Pinacol-Adas from
@CRUKresearch

The moment you've been waiting for has *nearly* arrived:
#retrosynth2019
final is tomorrow! We have a full house and we're looking forward to welcoming you all to Belgrave Square - registration starts at 10.30 and the competition gets underway at 11.00 😀
Great work again by team SynCity from
@OxfordChemistry
. They do a key photoredox cyclization with NHC catalysis late in their synthesis to tie the two halves of their molecule together into a central ring.
