Ulysses Grant’s birthday. The finest soldier to ever wear US Army blue. Captured three armies - Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, Appomattox. Destroyed slavery, “the cause and pretext for the rebellion.” Saved the United States and democracy. Huzzah!.#Grant

No. The Confederate Monument at Arlington was never “Reconciliation monument.” That’s a brand new term. It celebrates the end of biracial democracy and the “horror of reconstruction.” It celebrates the triumph of “Anglo-Saxon Civilization.” So racist. Shout out @KevinLevin

Today is “Victory in Virginia” day. US Grant forced Lee and his rebellious army to surrender. 2m US soldiers (including nearly 200k African Americans) destroyed slavery, freed 4m from bondage, preserved democracy, and saved the USA. Here’s Grant’s proclamation. #Appomattox

My @WSJ letter responding to @JimWebbUSA’s plea to keep the Arlington Confederate monument. The Naming Commission recommended removal. @SecDef ordered it removed. It’s a cruel, proslavery monument that trumpets the victory of white supremacy in 1914.

The Confederate Monument at Arlington was never the “Reconciliation Monument.” .The monument’s creators described the “astonishing fidelity of the slaves” and “kindly relations between master and slave.” .It’s pro slavery! And pro traitor!.
192 Republicans just voted to restore a Confederate monument to Arlington National Cemetery, which features a Black 'Mammy' holding a white soldier's baby, and a slave following his master into battle. The effort from Rep. Andrew Clyde R-GA lost 230-192.

The last mass lynching in the US occurred in my adopted hometown of Monroe GA in 1946. No one was ever held accountable. One victim was a Black vet. MLK, then 17, wrote his first published letter in response to the heinous crime, calling out the moral rot of racism. #mlk

Hey! @NikkiHaley! I can help. Why did the white South secede? Why did they choose treason? To protect and expand the immoral horror of owning other humans - slavery. Here’s an explainer. #civilwar #slavery.
Stunning moment: At a town hall in Berlin, N.H., Nikki Haley was asked by a voter what was the cause of the Civil War. She said the war was about government interfering in people’s freedoms. The voter then called her out for not mentioning slavery.

Thanks @jeffglor and @CBSThisMorning for your story on me and Robert E. Lee and me.
Army Brigadier General Ty Seidule served his country for more than 30 years. His new book, "Robert E. Lee and Me" is a searing attack not just on his upbringing, but on some ugly parts of America that endure. @jeffglor has more:

The military no longer honors those who killed US Army soldiers and chose treason to support slavery. We honor those who fought for our country - none better than Ike. Great article by @davis_winkie .#miltwitter #FortEisenhower.

For #blackhistorymonth, I honor Major Samuel Tucker. In 1939, he led the first sit-in protest in my hometown, @AlexandriaVA, fought Nazis in Italy, and as a lawyer led the fight against segregation in #Virginia. I grew up idolizing a traitor, but now, Samuel Tucker is my hero.

NEW FEATURE: A Friday ceremony here at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, wrapped a years-long effort to rename bases and repick the Army’s namesake heroes. I spoke with the Naming Commission’s @Ty_Seidule & others about what it means to the Army and to America.

Thanks! Washington picked blue for the Continental army uniform. Scott wore blue in 1847. Grant, Pershing and Ike wore blue too. Let’s celebrate those who fought for the USA (in blue), not those who killed US Army soldiers to destroy our country.
COL @Ty_Seidule chills reading this passage. Feel like I’ve always been the outlier thinking Lee was a traitor and Grant was the real hero. Just started reading it but great so far.

Great job, @DeanUsma. A wrathful Congress, upset by USMA grads who chose treason, created the 1861 cadet oath. The 1862 officer oath is also anti-Confederate. The US Army, led by West Pointers, destroyed slavery, freed 4m from bondage and saved the USA!.
🫡Among the plaques, you’ll find the cadet & officer oaths, which, as the class gift committee explains, “evoke poignant memories of the selfless sacrifices that so many classmates and military colleagues have made in fulfilling their vows to support and defend the Constitution.”

Yes! Grant’s US Army was an “army of liberation and empowerment. Lee’s army brought enslavement wherever it went. Remember in this war the home team, the US Army, were the good guys.
Grant's army was an army of liberation and empowerment, unlike Robert E. Lee's army. Vicksburg honors the service of those men who fought for freedom and union.
