Last year, I packed up my car in Louisiana, moved 10 hours north to Evansville and spent nine days in an extended stay until my apartment was ready.
Today, I have to be at a work meeting for the C&P in like 30 minutes lol.
Cheers to officially one year of me being a Hoosier 🥂
Memorial’s Ray Brodie is the sectional champion in the 100 meter dash. He also broke a sectional record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.58 seconds.
It’s time for some ✨ personal news ✨
This Louisiana girl will be moving to the Hoosier state next month as a high school sports reporter for the
@courierpress
! I’m extremely blessed and grateful for this opportunity, and I’m so excited to get things started!
Castle’s Gretchen Hurt commits to Navy track and field.
Has been a state qualifier for the Knights in each of the last two seasons. Was an SIAC, sectional and regional champion last year in discus throw.

It wasn’t just Clay Conner’s (
@clayconnerr
) 160 rushing yards and three total touchdowns that got Boonville the win against Reitz. It was an entire team effort, from Carter Wolfe making plays as a runner to the defense snagging three interceptions.
More from Conner on the win:
At 13, Treasure Washington dreamt of one day being a sports journalist.
At 26, she’s now written for two nationally-known newspapers. She currently is the only female on her paper’s sports staff.
It’s safe to say that her dreams are continuing to come true. Happy

I caught up with
@cameron_tilly
earlier this week and asked him what it was like winning gold with the 18U National Team at the Baseball World Cup earlier this month.
Tilly: “It was the coolest experience of my life. It was unreal.”

’s career on the mat has already been prolific. The top-ranked wrestler at 195 won over 80 matches the last two years and has wrestled at Gainbridge three times in his HS career. Now, he is a state champion.
More on Purdy from Indianapolis:
On a personal note, I really really enjoyed my first year covering Indiana (and Kentucky) high school football.
It was an absolute blast getting to go to different stadiums, see different student sections, learn different traditions and talk with different players and coaches.
Jackie Lis already had a storybook high school softball career at Castle. She’s now making an immediate impact as a freshman with SIU, leading the MVC in home runs and being one of the hottest freshman hitters in the country.
Story on Lis’ success:
Talked to Castle senior Benny Patterson (
@BennyPattlll
) earlier this morning as his team prepares for the upcoming season.
Here is the Cincinnati commit on what it means to be a leader for the Knights and how awesome it is to see local talent in the Power 4:
Proud to announce I received my very first journalism award today for one of the first major features I ever did for the C&P.
My editors (
@chadlindskog
,
@RyanReynolds
), Grace Pritchett and everyone else involved in this story deserve just as much credit for this award as I do.
Clay Conner (
@clayconnerr
) had a very very good game against Mount Vernon with a double-double of 15 points, 20 rebounds. He was one of many Pioneers who contributed greatly in the win against the Wildcats.
More from Conner below:
Having one volleyball team from SW Indiana go to state is cool enough. But two volleyball teams from the same county? That’s absolutely astonishing.
Both
@CastleVball
and
@TecumsehVball
have punched their tickets to Worthen Arena next weekend. Story:
Former
@mhsgirlsbball_
coach Bruce Dockery will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.
I spoke with him earlier this week on what the honor means to him:
Drew Lannert pretty much made one of the biggest free throws of his life. It was the difference in Mater Dei’s win against Bosse. The Wildcats will move on to play Memorial in the Class 3A Sectional 32 semifinals.
Here’s more from Lannert on the win:

has waited for this moment for the last 18 years.
The Purple Aces are the MVC tournament champions after defeating No. 20 Indiana State. They are heading back to the NCAA tournament.
More from Braun Stadium:
The third-largest city in Indiana, Evansville has a 13.6% Black population, as well as 11 Black high school head coaches.
I spoke with a few of them on the importance of representation and diversity in high school sports:

’s love and passion for sports has led to a 37-year career in the local sporting goods industry. The North graduate just retired in May.
Hicks: “You meet a lot of great people in that business. The customers that I had, I adored them all.”
Clay Conner does it yet again.
He scores from 26 yards out, his third total touchdown of the night. The two-point conversion is good.
Boonville - 28, Reitz - 14, 4:59 left in the game
No. 4 Memorial remains undefeated so far this season and are having one of their best starts in recent memory. The Tigers are playing really efficient basketball as of late.
Here is Avery Kelley (24 points) with more on tonight’s win against Central:
It’s not the prettiest but I made my first-ever credentials board today.
I’ve had my ups and downs but I’m still proud of all the milestones and accomplishments I made so far as a sports journalist.
North coach Billy Hewig loves seeing his son Lane succeed on the mat up close this season. So does Peyton and Austin Bell to each other throughout their Huskies careers.
Story on how family remains a driving force for North, especially in the postseason:
I moved to Indiana six months ago today. In those six months I met a lot of cool people, saw a lot of cool places and covered a lot of cool moments in high school sports. I may be a Louisiana girl at heart, but I’m growing more and more as a Hoosier at the same time :)
North hasn't won a state title in boys tennis in almost 40 years. A Husky boys doubles pair hasn't made it to Indianapolis since 2011.
Will Cusic and Gabe Wilke aim to take another crack at the title tomorrow. Here's more on their journey to Park Tudor:
For decades, the backbone of
@UEAthleticsBASE
’s program is its local talent.
This year is no different. From North’s Ty Rumsey to Boonville’s Nick Smith, multiple SW Indiana prep standouts are playing critical roles in the Aces’ run to super regionals:

continued to impress in his sophomore year for Heritage Hills. He joined the 1,000-point club, broke the single-season scoring record and Big Ten coaches even saw him in person.
He is also this year’s C&P All-SW Indiana Player of the Year:
I realized this when I went to bed last night, but for the last three seasons, an IHSAA softball champion has come from Warrick County.
2021: Boonville
2022: Tecumseh
2023: Tecumseh
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
A Warrick County softball team has won state in each of the last three seasons.
Is the county a hotbed for Indiana high school softball? Players and coaches alike agree.
"Obviously, it's been a good history of winning state between all three schools.”
Heck of an afternoon for Tucker Tornatta and Memorial. But even when Tornatta went down, the Tigers defeated Reitz behind dominant performances from Luke Ellspermann (
@lukeellspermann
), Simon Schulz and more.
Highlights:
More from the junior Ellspermann:
Virgil Ferguson’s legacy goes far beyond North Posey High School and Southwestern Indiana.
The late former Vikings AD truly cared about his school, his community and others in general. And he was never short on telling stories.
“He was just a great man.”
I have never posted these pictures before until today but frick it not only am I confident in what I wear but I’m also a million times more confident in my own body and being a Black woman in general and also I look pretty gosh darn good in yellow 💛

@UEAthleticsBASE
isn't going home just yet.
Despite facing adversity from start to finish, the Aces took down No. 1 Tennessee 10-8. A winner-take-all game will be played tomorrow afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for the chance to go to Omaha:
“Even though I am a victim, I will not live my life as one. I am an Olympian.”
“I am a survivor surrounded by an army of survivors.”
THESE. WORDS. ARE. POWERFUL.

Not many expected for Boonville to beat undefeated Reitz last night. The Pioneers hadn’t beaten the Panthers since 1921.
But never say never. The Pioneers got the upset in one of the most thrilling matchups this year. What an awesome scene in Boonville:
Castle took care of business against Reitz as it remains undefeated in the SIAC. The Knights recorded nine hits while junior Sadie Winsett (
@WinsettSadie
) tallied seven strikeouts in the circle.
More from Winsett on the win against the Panthers is below:
American Legion baseball is regaining popularity in Southwestern Indiana.
A bunch of high school standouts, from Newburgh to Jasper, and even a few high school coaches are involved in Legion ball. They want to see Legion still grow as much as possible:
Henderson County’s Alec Satterfield and Reed Rheinhardt officially sign with Oakland City baseball.
The seniors played key roles in the Colonels’ run to Lexington last spring.
Signature School senior Ava Olomajeye has just signed to run at Indiana University.
Olomajeye is currently ranked No. 1 and 2 in the 200- and 400-meter dash in the state, respectively. Finished fifth in the 400 in last year’s state finals.
