So um I just won a PTQ with two pieces of blank cardboard in my maindeck.
I found out in round 2 that Kaya's Ghostform is completely bugged on magic online. It doesn't trigger when the creature dies or is exiled.

On the topic of leaked decklists, our mutate decklist for the Strixhaven championship was leaked BY EVENT COVERAGE four days before the decklists were supposed to be public.
We were intentionally quiet about it so I don't think many people realized how bad it was. (1/3)

Went back to the hotel room and cried for a bit. Worlds was extremely overwhelming, but also one of the coolest and most fun things I've gotten to be a part of in a long time
I can't say I'm not still a bit disappointed after the good start but that's just how it goes

extremely weird weekend, really got the full range of emotions
i don't even feel like i really played any differently, just this time it was my opponents missing their 3rd land drops
Went 1-5 at PTMOM. Played against all good players. Losses were unavoidable.

I didn't think we'd ever do better than we did at the mutate PT, but we completely crushed it this weekend. Crazy to think about how far we've come in the last two years.

I set a goal for myself to write more about magic. This Living End article ended up being a much bigger endeavor than I anticipated though and I ran out of steam.
I'm posting it here largely unedited in case anyone finds it insightful or interesting

never been the only person on my team on a deck before... I really love playing living end though and nothing else seemed more compelling in the end
changed a few cards at the last minute that probably wasn't ideal, but overall happy with my list

It's pretty surreal sitting at 6-0.
This time a year ago I went 0-4 drop at my first "PT" and felt defeated. I wasn't sure I'd ever qualify for another big magic event.
Thanks to everyone who helped me prep for this event or helped me get better at magic in the past year.

Of the six people who registered the deck in our group, three missed the challenger gauntlet on tiebreakers. One extra match win would have been worth something like ~10k in EV.
Would it have been different w/o the leak? I don't know, but it's frustrating to think about. (6/6)

Instead, it seems like the rules encourage you to mislead your opponent about the game state sometimes, but other times if you do that then it is cheating

at dreamhack you can walk 200 feet and see 1000s of people who carried their gigantic computers into the event
but magic players have to live in the stone age buying $10 commons from dealers and asking their opponents if they can play faster

Couldn't eek out the 2k, but we'll take it. Built the deck on a whim on Friday and played just a handful of matches to test.
Got scared at the last minute and almost registered auras. Auras is very good, but does not pass the expressive iteration test.
Deck was great.

this was the deck I played. I didn't want to play the 4th iteration, felt like there were too many sorceries.
I also really love the AFR basic land art after it carried me in the INN champs. The art is beautiful and the flavor text has grown on me.

Came very close to winning two PTQs in a row. Finished 2nd in the SCG with RB sac. Had some questionable keeps at the end, but I'm pretty exhausted after almost 14 hours of magic.

Our group and a group of Japanese players were the only people in the event to bring mutate to the tournament. The deck was completely novel at that point and had never seen serious play.
Other teams had never tested against it and had no idea how the deck even worked. (2/3)

Lost in the top 12 cut of the historic ptq today to timing out. Feel pretty defeated😕
Yesterday, I lost in the quarterfinals of the pauper super ptq and got 7th in the alchemy ptq. I think I'm now at 6 top 8s for this season.
A ptq win would essentially lock me for worlds.

Despite being in an insanely good position in game one and lethal on board game two, along with a game-breaking bug that I had no way at all to play around, I don't get the invite. Insanely crushed. Just the most sickening way to go out in the final PTQ of the season.

I'm terrified to play paper magic at the PT.
The paper magic rules seem irreparably bad and so I'm just going to play to maintain the game state correctly and hope my opponents do the same.
I don't want to compete with my opponent to see who can use more confusing language.

Deck is still nuts. Expressive Iteration is the best card in every format.

The 6 of us who registered Mutate in our group had a combined record of 28-14 (excluding the two team pairings).
We put two people in the top 8 and three of us finished 10-5 for the requal.
The first and probably last time I will ever feel 100% confident in the 75 I registered.

I was so sad yesterday after failing to day 2 alchemy and losing out in historic. Really thought I was totally dead.
I haven't felt like this since I turned in my undergrad thesis. I worked so hard for it but never thought it would actually happen

The end result was that other teams had an extra 4 days to test against the breakout Standard deck in the tournament.
This happened once before with the UG Karn deck that team CFB submitted for PT Dominaria in 2018 and got much more attention. (5/n)

Except mutate hadn't seen any play in any previous events. The only lists that had been played previously looked substantially different than ours or the Japanese list
The list published in the article was 95% identical to what we registered and had all of our innovations. (4/n)

Paper coverage seems totally unwatchable. What is the point if you can't see any part of anyone's hands?
There's no suspense. Nothing to think about while the players are thinking. Makes it feel incredibly slow paced.

Top 8ed the mocs open. My sealed pool was insane. All of my rounds went to time and I played pretty poorly in some spots, but got lucky on the tiebreakers and made it in.
Happy with how the draft went and feel much better there, but discarded 4 times to hand size in g3.

I'm allowed to knowingly not take two life from my oponent's sheoldred when casting my opt. Yet if I cast opt in my mainphase while my opponent has Narset in play and draw a card it is grounds for disqualification.

g1 he misses his 3rd land drop 4 turns in a row
g2 he has an egg early. I make a hard decisions to divide his egg in response to flip knowing he has a test in hand to get rid of his treasures. I find bolt the turn before I'd die.

I've hated all of the pioneer decks ever since the rec ban. They're all too clunky or play too many bad cards. I didn't even consider auras because I thought stonecoil serpent was embarrassing.

Ended up registering this for the SPTQ, which may have actually been the best deck in the tournament (even with two blank cards lol). Feels very far ahead of what everyone else is doing.
