34 years service, 8 deployments, lost multiple friends in combat, and then I see an idiot dancing on the tomb of the unknown soldier. You are not freedom fighters. You are having a temper tantrum. You be the first to curl up in a corner if deployed.
Bad news: Another Christmas away from my family today. Good news: I get to work with Dr Tahir Rafiq and help island patients on their worse day. Merry Christmas PEI.
Got to dance with this awesome. Canadian today.
@KatharineSmart
he says I am just as good as you.
@GurdeepPandher
thank you for visiting PEI. So nice to meet you.
Meet front line COVID warriors. These underrated professionals are the key to the fight against COVID. We have the cleanest ED in the country. Thanks Sheri and Holly for what you do and the risk you take daily.
Fun fact. Did you know hospitals in Canada are not where legislation is passed or debated?I know right. Surprising.We have government buildings in your Provincial Capitals where our elected officials do business. If/when considered protesting start there and get out of the way.
Looking after COVID patients this Christmas break I haven’t admitted anyone yet. Don’t concentrate on cases. It doesn’t help your mental well-being. Hospitalizations and ICU admissions is a better indicated of disease burden.
#covidwarrior
Congratulations to this rock star, Dr JoAnne McGinn, an emergency physician who enters her 30th year of practice as of today. We are so lucky to have her at the QEH ED. One of the smartest docs I know.
We got you PEI. Breath, go for a brisk walk, think about three things your grateful for. A COVID warrior’s superpower is kindness. We are a team of teams and we will finish this pandemic together.
#covidwarrior
The abuse of one of the kindness physicians I worked with last night was disgusting by a patients family. The abuse of one of our outstanding nurses last night was disgusting. A medical issue doesn’t give you the right to abuse anyone. No wonder we can’t recruit to the ED.
It’s becoming inhumane to be an emergency nurse or emergency physician in Canada. COVID is an easy “reason why” to the current problems that have been in the making for 20 years.

@NightShiftMD
Did you know if a doctor graduates from their residency program in one province they are not licensed to practice in another? They have to apply, red tape, pay huge fees, references the full meal deal. It’s time for one national Canadian Physican license.
@CAEP_Docs
@CMA_Docs
So awesome to have worked a shift with Mike Hannah. A medical student who was one of the first graduates of the BSc In Paramedicine program. He is going to be an outstanding physician. Yes I already got a verbal promise from him to practice on the island when he is done.
@AlisonKabaroff
1) you didn’t over react
2) you are actually looking after sick people with COVID
3) Alberta is lucky to have you
4) If you were male no one would have accused you of over reacting
5) Don’t change
Peggy’s Cove….thank you. You were kind to me today. I haven’t seen you in 25 years. Serene, reflective, quiet and calm. A coast guard ship near the crash sight was on station. 229 souls seem to hover here. It was good to see you today.
Santa’s medical was completed today at QEH. Team effort. EKG, Bloodwork, chest x ray, PFTs, stress test all good. He has been cleared to fly and his aviation medical signed off. Safe flight Santa.
Three more Covid patients today is not unexpected nor a surprise. We got this. Be kind to each other and respect CPHO guidelines. There are champions of LTC that are invested in their care, safety and security. Your hospitals are ready and prepared if needed. We got this.
More cases and one hospitalization isn’t unexpected. You got this PEI. I know it’s easy for people to say remain calm but we are so far ahead of this disease compared to 2020. Your health care workers are going to look after if you need it. You got this we got you.
I don’t normally do this but this company emergency fixed a cracked glass shadow box for a soldier on extremely short notice. “For the military…..on us”. Thank OConnor Glass.
The youth who tested positive for Covid did exactly what they were suppose to do. Got tested, cooperated with the system to identify close contacts and stayed home. Support and kindness are part of the COVID warrior ethos and this is what they need right now.
Our COVID ICU is in the final countdown of being complete. Another in house initiative of our ICS team at the QEH. Without plumbers, electricians, or carpenters this would not have happened.

Health care system in Canada is like a bleeding trauma patient. You can keep adding blood (recruit, foreign train, privatize) but you need to stop the bleed (retention of ED docs, ED nurses, family docs) in order to save the patient.

Wanted to let you all know, thanks to the assistance of the
@OttawaPolice
and
@OPP_ER
that both the national war memorial and the aboriginal veterans monument have been cleared. We cleansed both spaces w a smudge, ceremony and prayers. We need to de better.
Last shift: examined patients in hallways, assessed a peds patient on the floor (no room), over 20 admits, short RNs, access block the worst in 25 years of clinical practice, significantly worse in the last year, yet islanders were extremely patient and kind to us in the ED.
Got to work Christmas Eve with this fantastic islanders. Despite the challenges the last three years they were happy to work to provide care to islanders on their worse day. Overcrowded and under resource but still smiling. Merry Christmas.
Health care workers are heartbroken about the news today after continuing to hold the line for the past 21 months. My heart is with the families. We will continue to hold the line and give the best care possible with the resources and staff we have.
Calling island 12-39 year olds. Get the vaccine. Be a warrior. Don’t believe mis information or the echo chambers of social media. I have never treated polio or small pox thanks to vaccines. Join the fight. Be a warrior.

Meet COVID Warriors Eldon and Priscilla. They are important part of the medical assistance chain and are a key component in the fight against COVID 19. Thank you EMS!
10 minutes into my shift and already bitten by a patient. Triggers blood work, paperwork, injections, prescriptions, and a delay on see a full waiting room and sick patients waiting. Thank you
@ChtownPolice
for responding. Just waiting to get cleaned up and back to it.
Thank you to these two surf guards who keep us safe with their team at Brackley Beach. Full disclosure…..my twin daughters. Great job girls!

PEI: let’s aim for the highest fully vaccinated province in Canada. Let’s show them how it’s done. Step up, get the jab, get er done. Your fellow Covid warriors need you.
#covidwarriors
To Island students returning to school tomorrow: Only 51 cases of COIVD. All travel related. No hospitalizations. No community spread. Following recommended measures works. Continuing to do so this fall sets you up for a wonderful school year. You got this.

Paramedics always asked where the doctor is. Is closed loop communication without making any assumptions. They did the right thing. Having responding to multiple emergencies in flight on my career even though I am standing paramedics confirm who is who.
Seriously humbled to receive this award named after one of my mentors and someone I admire. Congratulations to all the award recipient’s.
@alandrummond2
Honored and surprised today to be presented with a Quilt of Valor. I am extremely grateful and thankful for what these volunteers do for our veteran community. Amazing.
Meet Ian Ross. This young man is a soldier, a paramedic and a newly minted grad from the BSc in Paramedicine program at UPEI. Congrats! We are all very proud of you.
2/2 Our team leader worked miracles, our cleaning staff never stopped to turnaround those beds, the docs I worked with saw folks and treated them at triage, our nurses multitasked like a quantum computer, I saw kindness and empathy. It takes a team of teams in a crisis.
22 years ago I got called to respond to Swiss Air 111. I put on my uniform and went to Shearwater. I ended up working the morgue for several weeks. I met wonderful Canadians and think about the victims families and their loved ones often.

. It scares the shit out of me and it’s a blight on society. I will not sit idly by and let others spew hatred without calling it out.
Meet Emmet. He was supervising while I was multitasking today in the ED. He was extremely patient and quiet. Although a language barrier he seemed to be happy with the work flow. He is a beautiful boy to his wonderful parents.

All health care workers should be required to be vaccinated against Covid. I applaud businesses and organizations requiring Covid vaccines for entry. Thanks for being Covid warriors.
Donna, today is your last shift. 50 years of service to your community. You have contributed to so many islanders lives on their worst day and one of the best members of our emergency department team. Thank you for everything. We already miss you.
I spoke with the amazing staff in the ED, on Unit 3 and the ICU. Calm, cool, collected at the bedside. Providing best care in a controlled manner. The work done in 2020 tweaked, rehearsed and put into motion. Covid warriors each of them maintaining the aim. Be calm, Be kind.
End of an era for QEH ED. Dr Brad Brandon has practiced Emergency Medicine for 40 years. He started July 1st 1984. He trained a generation of docs, nurses, paramedics and also delivered a few of them. Brad, thank you for your incredible service to all islanders!
What are the chances two islanders meet in the desert? Pretty good actually. Meet Cpl Bret Biso an amazing Canadian, Islander and shooter who put the “Doc” through his paces on the range today. Thanks for what you do.
I took an oath to serve Queen Elizabeth when joining the Armed Forces 36 years ago. For members of the CAF, for those of us who took this serious oath in the 80’s it’s a sad day.
A vaccinated persons testing positive for Covid with the sniffles versus a non vaccinated persons having their last rites read to them on a vent in the ICU are different outcomes of the disease. Get the vaccine and save your last rites for later in life.
After my second dose and 24 hours later I had a few aches and chills. Happy to feel that. Why? It means my immune system is cranking out its defense and is responding. Thanks science. Be a Covid warrior and get vaccinated.

Getting ready for night shift….yes Medical officers do carry weapons in order to protect themselves and their patients in hostile situations. Doing medicine at night at 200MPH with low light in the back of this thing. Talk about challenging RSI. Should be fun.
Meet Mary, Nadine, Sonia, Laura our bad ass ICU CMERT flight nurses preparing their drugs and drips for the upcoming missions. Fantastic group of Canadians doing amazing things.
Meet Covid warrior Lorraine. One of our laundry workers. Without her, QEH would not have the PPE, sheets, towels and other necessities to give care.
#covidwarrior
Using they own iniative the QEH ED has a COVID assessment area for those patients who are sick. Don’t be scare if you require emergency services and see us dressed like this. We are protecting you and us. We got you and will look after you.
#COVIDWARRIORS
Getting ready to start my shift. Bad news: we are a doc short again. Good news: I get to work with this guy Dr Tom Kaul who I did residency with and is excellent.
Thank you to the QEH ED to the entire staff who put themselves at risk willingly to look after patients in the COVID environment. They look after the highest risk of undifferentiated patients and do so willingly.
#covidwarriors
Electrical panel burned out , my neighbor happens to be a semiretired electrician. Came over right away, secured supplies, after hours from a closed electrical store, rewired the house for 8 hours until 0100hrs. Meet Everett Griffin a COVID warrior and fantastic islander.

1/2 24 beds in the ED, 22 occupied by admitted patients, 3 nurses short, 1 doctor short, patient moved to hallway, another temporarily into equipment room, offload delays decreasing availability of 911, no social services available, CTAS scores not met,yet
Ran into two of my old medics who worked in the morgue with me on Swiss Air so many years ago. They both performed outstandingly. Canadians will never know what they did but they are both amazing in my eyes.
Meet the QEH laboratory staff. These COVID warriors ensure that the plethora of testing required for our patients are still being done. Thank you for what you do! Amazing.
Health care providers who spread mis information about Covid should be held accountable. Or at least go back to school and do basic science. Mis information kills.
Very excited! Santa is having his pre flight medical done at the QEH ED on the 22 Dec. I hope he has been exercising a bit, watching his cookie intake. I was concerned about his cholesterol last year. He says he is been working hard and looking forward to flying.
To the disaster medicine specialist physicians who implemented, planned, and responded a second time less then a decade in Saskatchewan, please look after yourself during this MCI. Your patients are lucky to have you.
So proud of these beautiful, talented, young women; that I get to call my daughters, who graduated with honours today. Sydney and Tasha, you are going to do great things! Love you to the moon and back.
#Dalhousie
Got to work with these amazing islanders last shift. All BIPOC Physican team looking after acute care patients. Dr Rafiq (Emergency medicine) and Dr Harris-Eze (internal medicine). Amazing clinicians who I learn from everyday. (Photo at end of shift)
Patient showed me a letter after being fired from her primary care provider randomly. In it it says go to the ED for care. Wrong answer. We are not primary providers specialists. But we are happy to see you if no where else to go but the ED shouldn’t be the easy button.
Beside the military personnel from Gagetown please note that up to 40 soldiers are reservists from PEI and part of the community. They are serving while trying to manage their own home devastation.

Who would have thought 4 months from completing my PhD in disaster medicine that this program would be so useful. Thankful for the operational and experiential knowledge. Dalhousie Med school always said to be a life long learner.
#covidwarrior
Mission complete. Heading home soon. Meet Fred, Mary and Mike. Fantastic Canadians who I got to fly with. Thanks for everything you did for the team. Your patients are lucky to have you.
Final fitting for my Covid armour. Shot number 2. Fits nice, head to toe protection, lightweight and invisible. Be covid warrior. When able get vaccinated.

After 13 years as the Medical Director for Holland College Paramedicine Programs I hand over today to Dr Harrison Carmichael welcoming him as the new Medical Director. A fantastic young, dynamic, keen Emergency specialist who will do great things for Paramedicine on PEI.
Got to hang with these amazing health care providers today. Nic Clory and Christena Visser are amazing paramedics who serve islanders in multiple roles. We are so lucky to have them.

Have a safe Canada weekend.
1) stay hydrated
2) alcohol and MJ in moderation
3) sun screen
4) No “hold my beer and watch this” moments.
5) No drinking and driving
These few steps help staying out of the ED this weekend and seeing our team.
There is a whooping cough (pertussis) outbreak in Southern Alberta.
This outbreak "spans several communities with low childhood immunization rates."
This is a canary in the coal mine - none of this has to happen.
We are in deep shit.
Fantastic work QEH ED last night. Maintaining composure, safety and giving awesome care to the patients while ensuring their safety and your own. This while working in an exposed environment maintaining professionalism and ensuring capability.
Meet Vice Admiral “Dusty” Miller. He was the commander overall in charge of 2500 CAF personnel and assets for the Swiss Air disaster. Military leaders today could learn a lot from him. Last time we saw each other I gave him a brief in Hanger B…25 years ago. An amazing leader.
Powerful statement by the Canadian Thoracic Society. “There is no evidence that wearing a face mask will exacerbate (cause a “flare-up” of) an underlying lung condition.
78 years ago an amazing group of Canadians put it all on the line in Normandy so that we could enjoy freedoms of today. To all veterans thank you for your sacrifice, your service and your willingness to do what others are unable.
