RIP that gloriously eccentric character player Damaris Hayman, not far off her 92nd birthday - she helped Doctor Who battle The Daemons, walked the halls of St Trinian's, saw the Pink Panther Strike Again and was the essence of genteel English wit opposite many great comics.

Many of us owe our love of Doctor Who to Terrance Dicks: his books made the stories come to life & expanded our vocabulary as they did so. Writer, script editor & one of its greatest ambassadors, he enunciated the show brilliantly. A kind man. #TerranceDicks WAS Doctor Who. RIP.

With a heavy heart and the family’s permission I am sad to announce the death this morning of that warm, naturalistic and popular actor Bernard Holley - PC Newcombe in Z-Cars, Mike Turnbull in The Gentle Touch, Axos in Doctor Who and Jackanory reader. A friend, I shall miss him.

Sad to hear that Chris Boucher, the last surviving writer of 1970s Doctor Who, has died. He had a gift for sharp, witty dialogue and sardonic characters, as evidenced further by his work on Blake's 7. He also did good work on Juliet Bravo, Shoestring & Bergerac. TV legend - RIP.

Dear @michaelhogan / @Telegraph , when you don’t see the casting of a critically acclaimed RSC/NT actress who happens to be disabled (disability is massively under-represented on TV: statistical fact) as “box ticking” instead of “progress” then you may stop being part of the problem

RIP Geoffrey Palmer: an exemplar of a certain kind of deadpan, lugubrious humour, he made disappointment & pessimism somehow loveable & stoic. He had a fantastic, droll delivery & brilliant face: like a phlegmatic bulldog. Undeniably great at comedy but a fine straight actor too.

It's a bittersweet honour but I'm pleased to have been allocated another end of year slot on BBC Radio 4 Extra to give a final curtain call to some of the sci-fi and genre heroes who departed in 2023. Have a listen if you can - Dec 30th, 12.40am/4.40pm:

What should actually be “Recommended For You” @BBCiPlayer is the choice to watch the credits of a programme without having to grab my remote control as soon as the bloody thing ends. Jumping to some other random show is disrespectful to what I’m enjoying and to its makers.

Early start for a stint of documentary making this week, including a hastily convened extra shoot today which involves this ridiculous hour and three cities in one day. Imagine what it’d be like if we hadn’t lost interest in the Blu-ray range and moved on to other things ;)

I fell asleep on the sofa and woke up to find my other half watching a thing called Married At First Sight Australia and now I think television should be uninvented and everyone in the world should be killed.

Thanks to Peter Miles no-one will ever be able to utter the line “Thank you, that’s what I wanted to know” ever again because the way he did it was brilliant and unbeatable. He owned it. RIP to a true eccentric and wonderful villainous turn. What a guy:

If you hadn’t shown me that I wouldn’t have believed he got away with it. How glorious. Tom Baker, 87 today & not of this Earth, proving he was always pretty keen on giving everything and just a little bit more to a performance. Not a moment wasted! Haha! What a guy. I love him.

George and the Dragon (3rd February 1968). Tom Baker certainly makes the most of his brief screen time.

I think I got so used to watching him in the role when I was young that I took for granted just how good he is. He’s perfect. It’s an absolutely gorgeous performance of charm and wit and danger and sparkle. Happy 100th Birthday to a legend. One of a kind.

In 30 years time @DWMtweets will do an article which tracks down everyone currently commenting on #DoctorWhoOnTwitch and interviews them. One of them will be the programme’s new show runner (hopefully the one who said “SMASH HER DOCTOR” during The Aztecs’ cocoa scene).
