Dear Friends, Here is Duck the Great Western Engine. When he arrived on Sodor, he was painted black. “We can’t have that!” the Fat Controller said. Duck was soon repainted in full Great Western colours. Although - between you and I - a few liberties were taken! The Modeller

Something that's overlooked about the IOS is the fact it's written from an 'in-universe' perspective. Awdry can't speak as Sodor's creator and outright say "Edward is a K2" despite the fact this is what he means. He instead writes from the perspective of an in-universe historian.

Contrary to popular fan belief, Donald and Douglas do not work together on the Arlesburgh Branch. It is said in 'Donald's Duck' that they take it in turns to help Duck. The only times that we see them there together are before Oliver is mended and when Oliver has his accident.

The decision to have Donald and Douglas repainted blue is symbolic of the fact that they had been rescued from an uncertain future and the uniformity of British Railways, which many detested at the time. Having them stay in the black livery would defeat the purpose.

“Edward doesn’t look anything like a K2.” No, of course he doesn’t. He’s been rebuilt to the point where his ancestry is uncertain (although undoubtedly a Furness loco). This is in the IOS; there is no point in looking for an alternate basis based on the pictures. He is unique.

DID YOU KNOW? Edward is a lot like Toby. In the books, Toby seems to live at Ffarquhar but the IOS has him based at Knapford (as on the layout). Edward appears to live at Wellsworth in the books but the IOS implies he may be based at Tidmouth (as on the layout funnily enough).

"The NWR has some eighty locomotives with which to work its system..." While it's fun to imagine most of these are steam locos, the fact is that the IOS was published in 1987. We're probably looking at >20 steam locos, the Peel Godred locos and 50+ diesel/diesel-electric locos.
