Miss out on supporting CHEESE!? 🧀
It’s now possible to make a late pledge on Kickstarter so you can still grab a copy of the book or a mini comedy writing guide.
All money goes towards funding the project and making CHEESE! as awesome as possible.
As a kids/comedy writer, a big part of my job is to make people smile. Last night at Villa Park, I got one from Bruce

Here’s my rundown on what writers need to know following last night’s webinar
Found out today that people in the industry look at writers featured in my interview series to discover talent for future projects. At least one case of someone reading an interview leading to a commission for a big project. How awesome is that?
I’m back in the
@NewsjackBBC
writers room tomorrow. I know it can sometimes be hard to keep submitting but the team do come to know the regular contributors and invite new writers in all the time. It’s all about persistence. Two episodes left - keep going!
Trey Parker discussed this in the 6 Days to Air documentary and it remains one of the most useful bits of advice I’ve ever come across for writers. Still think about it all the time.
This is one of my favorite bits of screenwriting advice. After hearing this, a lot of the negative feedback that I got on earlier drafts started to make sense.
Your boy's in the
@DMsAreOpenBBC
writers room today but since I can't make it to Television Centre, here's a photo of me after 3 hours sleep, waiting to join the pitch meeting from home. Good luck to everyone who's submitting this week - We're halfway through the series already!
Joe Murray and team have delivered a really solid new Rocko’s Modern Life. Packed tight with jokes. A good time to recommend his book ‘Creating Animated Cartoons with Character’. Not limited to animation. It’s one of the most useful books on writing that I own

BBC need to introduce a more robust development pathway for new talent. It’s too disjointed and people are unable to progress in a meaningful way. When they do new shows (Ellie & Natasia, Such Brave Girls) they’re very good. But they’re not supporting talent - on and off screen.
Excited to announce that the first of two episodes of Big Cook Little Cook written by myself and

will be on

This is the kind of thing I’ve been saying about. All these little ways “creatives” have found to cut corners with AI… the only thing you’re doing is taking work away from people.
We’re going to see more of this type of thing. It’s awful.
A lot of writers have ‘get an agent’ on their list of goals for the new year but aren’t sure how to start. Here’s the story of how I signed my agent and what it means to be repped

Hey writers… I know we’re all concerned about the impact of AI in our industry. Let’s not make the problem worse by using AI artwork in our pitch materials. If you want art - pay a person.
AI art is gross and makes me want to vomit. Don’t cheapen your work.
THANK YOU 🧀

We didn’t know anyone in the industry. Just decided to film some things and put them on MySpace to try and get noticed. Did some live shows. Built up contacts. Got into TV.
We still have the day jobs (and probably always will) but it’s amazing what can happen sometimes.
My second “NEARLY” email of the series for

I know it’s still positive to get close but damn, I could have done with some good news today.
Anyone have any luck?

It was my Grandad Pete’s funeral today. He lived to 95 and was a brilliant storyteller. The day before he died, he packed a bag of his belongings, saying he was going somewhere to be with my Nan again. This photo is from 6 years ago - 4 generations together. RIP
885. Keep that number in mind if you submitted and try not to be disheartened if you aren’t selected. With those numbers, it’s not rejection. It’s just bad odds. Finishing a script that you’re willing to show to people IS the win.
Seeing a lot of posts about BBC rejections. I think more than ever, if you want to do something, you need to do it yourself. I know it can be hard to motivate yourself, but try and put that energy into making the thing you REALLY want to do.
I’m throwing a Boxing Day party!
I’ve invited a group of writers to my virtual living room to discuss achievements, TV/movie highlights, 2022 goals, New Year’s resolutions, and Secret Santa! Grab a Turkey sandwich and head over 🥪

For most writers “jumping in” without a day job is not possible. We’d be working that Sony job, writing through the night and sending query emails at lunch. It’s a constant struggle to balance everything and often starting with zero contacts. This quote only helps the privileged.
Just want to say a big thank you to everyone who likes, shares, and most importantly, reads the weekly writer interviews I post. It is noticed and very much appreciated. A fair bit of work goes into this so thanks for helping to share these stories.
Don’t waste your time getting hung up about what a comedy drama is… just go and write a script that means something to you. A project that you’re passionate about.
To be honest, I’m disappointed so many comedy people are only now just watching Things You Should Have Done. Shouldn’t take something being dragged for us to noticed it.
It doesn’t make sense that new writers are expected to create worlds and characters to demonstrate their ability. Wouldn’t we get a wider pool by asking for spec scripts of existing shows (like in the US)? Grow talent, get people working, and one day they may be a series creator.
Shout out to the writer who reported my Kickstarter for a children’s picture book as inappropriate content.
Not interested? Fine. It’s not for everyone. But don’t try to sabotage other people’s projects. It’s tough times and as writers, we need to have each other’s backs.
Look, I know I said I wasn’t going to submit to
