I tell stories with data, mostly about Malaysia π²πΎ

@Cointelegraph @bitcoinmalaya 20% faster than the Internet in terms of absolute numbers after N years. Are we gonna pretend that the global population didn't grow 25% in that time? In other words, on a per capita basis, it's slower.

No, itβs an evaluate their proposals and manifesto prior before voting for them. I realise that in Malaysia now, all parties treat election promises as a joke they can pull on the suckers who vote for them, but thatβs how democracy works I donβt know why having a degree in Public Policy makes them less likely to be dishonest or incompetent. Look at all the highly qualified PH ministers who are totally inept!

@eyemeroll @thedanielteoh Hence, evaluate based on what they say and propose - and not anything else. I am completely neutral about their religious background and/or beliefs if it doesn't translate into their politics.

@thedanielteoh BTW, I have worked with plenty of people with Public Policy degrees from the world's top universities, and many of them freely admit that they learned / remember almost nothing. Most of them did it (or something similar eg MBA) as a career break.

@Iqtodabal Check out the work of Piketty, Saez and Zucman for the US - we would need similar data collection / sources.

@tiotheo01 I actually assumed this was the reason for the original left-hand-side driving - that most people were right-handed and wanted their dominant hand on the wheel.

Have been following the ABPE development with interest for a while, Rich. A quick commentary: Population tomorrow = Population today + Births - Deaths + Immigration - Emigration And this is applied at all desired levels of granularity. Thus, one's confidence in ABPEs really depends on confidence in the quality of data for each of those 5 components. At higher resolution, immigration and emigration is particularly tricky because you can move freely within the country. A government like China would likely find this a trivial problem due to having full visibility over payments + telco data, but most governments do not have such Orwellian luxuries. I'm keen to see whether ABPEs break down during trend breaks, especially since statistical modelling is involved. My feeling is that traditional surveys will be required to recalibrate models during events like Covid / recessions. In this sense, I think 'Admin-Based' slightly obscures the fact that it is not a 'pure' data exercise - I need to believe in the quality of both the data and the modelling. That said, I think ONS has been maximally transparent with code + methods, so anyone with criticism needs to do their homework first! Many congratulations on the big achievement Rich - many people don't realise it, but population data is at the heart of public service delivery, and delivering more timely data is a huge win for the ONS!

@sdil @farhanhelmycode I've been aggressively trying to keep to my old habit of studying Docs for new stuff π Maybe I'm just being stubborn, but I absolutely can't stand implementing something I don't understand. (Was the same before with Stack Overflow, docs before doing what SO said)

@farhanhelmycode @sdil I do heavy data engineering work day to day, and until now, I have yet to find a situation where prompting was faster than autocomplete (using Sonnet and Deepseek in Cursor). Maybe my skill issue, but the pure AI code is really crap for me. Autocomplete has given me 4x speedup.

@pavitheran97 Hahahaha, that one is pure fate! Too big a requirement to impose for typical interracial couple π
