"I jumped in to find the man face down, unconscious and floating. I couldn't see his chest going up and down. He wasn’t breathing."
Awesome work, rightly so that he's put up for a bravery award.
A great aide memoire to have in your kit bag, im a big advocate of 'team leaders' using these on live jobs - it's not cheating its making sure everything is covered and giving the best possible care.
Great work from my team today - quickly on scene to a cardiac arrest. Early defib, good management of CPR with an igel/O2 resulting in ROSC and strong radial pulse. Patient soon breathing unassisted. Don't practise until you get it right, practice until you can't do it wrong.
Don't kneel in wet cement while laying a driveway - this is a colleague of mine who now needs complex skin grafts, has a big infection and is in hospital for an extended period of time after cement burns. Looks nasty.

What a fantastic day. A great job done by all involved. I had chats with police from all over the country, great to see so many forces involved and the public in such great spirits. Was a pleasure to be involved in.

Another officer on the department prepped and packed with medic essentials just in case an incident occurs to/from work. A large number of us now carry kit on our commutes to enable us to use the skills we've been taught if required.

New med kit bags being looked in to for the department, where and how everything is stored and what kit we need to have with us in the cars. Trialling one model today to see how it works in practice. What bags do you use and/or recommend?
We're now carrying Diphoterine in a range of different sizes depending on our role. On the operators headrests in all ARVs in aerosol and liquid form and a small 50ml for close protection work. Incredible bit of kit. What do you use for acid/chemical attacks/burns?
@DipHex_Ltd
Great leadership here from
@NorthantsChief
- assaults on police are going through the roof in my force. Having Taser as a tactical option is fantastic. Even holstered as a presence people take notice and it diffuses situations, brilliant bit of kit.

How do you spend your weekends? 2 Day CBRN refresher. Fantastic instruction at MPSTC, thanks to all involved in making it such a good weekend.

Awesome work - a lot of the time first aid isn't pretty and you have to just make something work. Even more so when 'the casualty was bleeding catastrophically'. Another life saved, hero stuff.

Another defibrillator has gone up near me, do you know where your nearest one is right now? Your workplace, school, supermarket? Are you confident in using one? They literally talk you through it but if you haven't used one before research it, know the basics and do them well.
A shot from yesterday's med course test day. Sensory overload with sirens, music, low light conditions and screaming casualties - students on the edge of their bandwidth but performed exceptionally well.
Very cool, take my money. (...and when I say mine I mean my Inspectors) I need to think of a convincing argument to have some of these for the department.
Assisted response officers today with a medic related call - was greeted with a fantastic ATMIST from uniformed officers who were doing a great job. Nice to see good first aid drills being used by all departments now and officers keen to get involved.
#thebasicdoneright
Learn how to use your kit, if you haven't had to get a bit of kit out for a while practice and make sure you are confident. Don't rely on 'I should be alright on the day'. A lack of confidence leads to errors, time lost and poor treatment. Do the basics well.
D13 refresher training today - an overview of the system and then scenarios of pelvic fracture, catastrophic haemorrhage and cardiac arrest. Nice to see the team getting stuck in even after years of firearms training working to improve and be better.
#thebasicsdonewell
Range day today. Training with multiple weapon systems including one that did this to a target. Who knows what it is? I would not want to get hit with one of these.
#ifyouknowyouknow
Today marks 43 years since the end of the Iranian Embassy siege. Most of the chat about it highlights the boys in black but don't forget PC Trevor Lock, one of the hostages whose professionalism, negotiations and courage saved many lives.

On to my third copy of this as the first two fell apart. Read it as a kid and have got it out again and again ever since. A few changes in technology and kit since but a lot still very relevant today. Highly recommended.
#traumatuesdays
- getting fast access to bleeding/wound sites is paramount. A lot of our casualties dealt with are stabbing/shooting victims so getting them 'trauma naked' is a must. Tough cut scissors/raptors are invaluable to assist that, wouldn't be without my pair at work.
There's always those two guys: the one who wants to put seals on his mate and the one who's happy to get his abs out haha. Medic refresher training today, different departments training together in pre hospital trauma care.

are trained and equipped to provide immediate life-saving care to colleagues, and others, at point of injury in high-threat environments.
Pre Hospital Trauma Care refresher today. The full system then Penthrox, Diphoterine and i-gel use in cardiac arrest with scenarios. Nice to be with keen officers who ask lots of questions that test me as an instructor so I have to go away and do more reading.

Had to bust out the 'D13 Hero cake' - off duty CPR from one of the lads on the department. Some great work, sounds like a life saved, his reply 'not all heroes wear capes'.
#neveroffduty
Great work - fantastic job by all. No hesitation to get stuck in and do their job, even though off duty. Professionalism, bravery and selflessness.

Shocking footage demonstrates "the heroism shown by these officers is nothing short of exceptional" as they separate the attacker from the victim.
Horrible scenes in Queensland. Thoughts to all those involved: victims, families, witnesses and the cops who are still in the fight and making the tactical decisions. Let's hope it's resolved safely.

#tourniquettuesdays
- what model do you use? Where is it on your kit? Are you confident with it? Whether it's a CAT, SAM or SOFTT make sure you're happy with its application so you can get it on fast, with bloody hands, in the dark under stress - real life vs classroom.
Night shift done, coffee and then straight to Birmingham for the
@emergencyukshow
- if I see you to chat and I'm yawning, you're not boring me, I just haven't slept! (Unless you're in Roads Policing in which case you're probably boring me about tread depth haha)
ATMIST - Age, Time of injury, Mechanism, Injuries, Signs & Symptoms, Treatment. A good handover is important, bad handovers can cause issues and are awful to listen to - keep them clear, relevant and professional. Practice makes perfect.
#thebasicsdonewell
Great to see diphoterine in use by the emergency services last night, fantastic bit of kit. Can't have been an easy scene to manage. Top work from all involved.
Remnants from last night’s attack in Clapham. Nine people were taken to hospital after a woman and two children were attacked with a corrosive substance at about 1930 last night.
@BBCLondonNews
No messing around, straight in to life saving first aid. An officer that is confident and knows what's needed to be done. Would you?
Great work. Hero stuff, give that guy a medal. I Hope the mother is getting the help she needs.
A very varied 2023 - a fair bit of travel, some good jobs at work and importantly lots of learning. Thanks to all who have helped with advice and inspiration through here, I appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing what happens in 2024. Happy New Year, stay safe.
Queuing up in Odeon for coffee before Mission Impossible when a 96 year old male fell down some stairs in a screen landing head first sustaining a nasty cut above his eye with significant bleeding. Very grateful for Odeon staff's assistance and their med kit.
*NOT REAL INJURIES*
An unresponsive patient waiting for the ARVs to find on a building search. Lots to deal with on this scenario - management of a firearms incident, containment, a complex building search, casualty care/extraction and then dealing with the suspect.
#nota9to5
Sad to see this violence aimed towards police. Good drills, teamwork and commitment from the officers to get their colleague straight to a place of safety before medical aid could be given. Safety comes first, don't become another casualty.

Loads of med kits and 'medics' in Maine at the moment. Great to see firearms teams worldwide putting lots of work in to trauma first aid and giving immediate action teams the kit/skills to save lives in 'hot zones' whether that be victim, suspect or police.
#thebasicsdonewell
@LifeAfloat
Your content on here is fantastic. If the series is half as good I'll be watching it. Most of the air time now is given airheads with absolutely nothing worthwhile to say. You on the other hand will be fantastic on TV and it'll be a great informative watch. Enjoy.
Continuation training today - all scenarios with a medical element whether that be cat haem, pelvic fracture, gsw or in cardiac arrest. A lot of complex issues and fast time scene management decision making. Good work by all involved.
#thebasicsdonewell
Another meeting with
@corrmed
, this time in their HQ to discuss a new med bag for the cars. Fantastic to meet the whole team. Top class quality and design, the sandwiches weren't bad either.
A couple of medic related jobs tonight, some very quick responses from

arriving just when we needed them and I even got to use my

Taser requalification today - PowerPoint lecture/discussion, written exam, a qualification shoot and shoot/dont shoot scenarios. Fantastic instructing including threat/risk, de-escalation, use of force powers and suspects with mental health conditions. Thanks to all involved.
Winter camping, Brecon Beacons this week in 2020. Nice to get out of London for a few days, relax and recharge the batteries. Who's coming with me next time?

Just received this from a colleague - looks like it was someone lucky day. Brilliant work from all involved by the sounds of it. Would you know what to do if this happened in your workplace?
Had a job yesterday involving self harm to the neck and wrists involving some fast removal of clothing down to skin level to assess wounds and control bleeding. This obviously brings concerns about a drop in body temperature - remember the triad of death, keep patients warm.
Packing a wound with a kebab, nice work, use what you've got - improvise, adapt and overcome. However it's probably better to use proper kit and be prepared with some sort of IFAK... probably.
