I have, and always will, maintained that eiders make the sound of a granny when, while sat down with milky tea and biscuits on a a floral-patterned sofa, you tell her you've met a nice boy.
Fuck your helium balloons. They will end up in the woods for us to pick up for you, and your kid probably cried when it flew off anyway. Do something less shit with this scare resource.
It’s always good to see a paper that I worked for 2 years on come out in a decent journal.
It’s less good to see this is the first I’d heard of it, and I’m not a coauthor.
Folks, make sure you recognize the contributions of former staff after they leave.
I’m very excited to announce that I’ve been promoted to Principal Curator in Charge of Birds

Did you know that the largest hummingbird is bigger than the smallest bird of prey? Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas) vs Black-thighed Falconet (Microhierax fringillarius)
#AskACurator
if you're ever tempted to ask "how did this study pass peer review?!" remember that "peer review" consists of 2 people who happen to be available and respond in a reasonable time.
Just because it's peer-reviewed doesn't mean it's right.
Waking up to a £200k successful (and highly competitive) grant application, scored 99/100 with “no major weaknesses identified” is most definitely a cause for celebration! See you soon,
@nesospiza

Here you go. The world’s largest hummingbird (Giant hummingbird; Patagona gigas) is bigger than the world’s smallest bird of prey (White-fronted Falconet; Microhierax latifrons)

In brighter news, 15 years ago today I went on a first date with a fellow at the James Joyce Pub at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel in Fredericton NB. He pawned his TV to pay for it; I didn't find that out until years later. I've only been on one first date. 🥰
Just heard on BBC Radio 4 Today: “I know you’re a scientist, so resist sentimentality”
Science isn’t (and shouldn’t be) devoid of emotion. Scientists shouldn’t fear showing emotional reactions to their science.
If you've followed for a while, or know me offline, you'll know that things have been a bit ... off the last few weeks/months. This came to a head on Sunday. After a GP consultation this afternoon, I'm starting a course of treatment for depression
"What's it like being a queer scientist?"
Well, today I spent close to 2 hours dealing with a professional society that thought the A in LGBTQIA+ stood for "ally" and published "f****t" in a blog post. Thanks for asking

I've been chasing this exact photo for nearly a decade, and very chuffed with the result - a Red-tailed Tropicbird against a clear blue sky. East Beach, Henderson Island.

what’s it like being an LGBTQ+ scientist? Just like any other scientist (with all the challenges that presents), but with the morality of your very existence questioned on a national platform in front of millions.

! In case it wasn't abundantly clear, I am quite firmly "Team Sparkle". I first came out in September 2005. I last came out, well, in this tweet.
You might think it's just not a big deal in 2021, but I can assure you that it is (1/6)
In the last few weeks since I vented on here about being left of a paper I thought I should’ve coauthored, I’ve had no less than 15 people write & say something similar is/has happened to them. Nearly all were ECRs; the majority were women

An acquaintance got hate-crimed in London last week, requiring an ambulance and hospital visit.
I have been out for 17 years.
I hate, Hate, HATE that we are still in the "travel in a group, and have a plan in case you get queerbashed" kind of society.
17 years.
I am exceptionally pleased & humbled to announce that I've been appointed Ornithologist in Residence at
@StNicholasLeics
!
This raises the question of why a church has an ornithologist in residence, and why it’s me (not a member of the congregation, or Christian). THREAD!
Periodical tweet that fancy whiz-bang science is cool and all, but for many species (even those that are well studied!) we still lack some basic information on what's often called "natural history" - distribution, phenology, morphology, etc. All of which is still important!
About to submit a single-species paper to a journal that has constantly rejected my single-species papers saying they do not publish single-species papers but whose latest issue has 70% of articles on single species.
Right... you asked for it! Giant Hummingbird vs Black-thighed Falconlet from the

. The biggest hummer & smallest bird of prey.
Fun fact: the giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas) is roughly the same size as the smallest birds of prey, like the black-thighed falconet (Microhierax fringillarius). The hummingbird is lighter, though.
“What’s it like being queer in STEM?”
It’s like watching those who question our community’s right to exist get honoured by the Royal Society, the epitome of scientific excellence in this country.
My boring Westminster Abbey fact is that they have the oldest taxidermied bird in the world - an African Grey Parrot that belonged to Frances Teresa Stuart, Duchess of Richmond (1672-1702) and died shortly after she did.
my boring westminster abbey fact is that the chandeliers in there were donated by the Guinness family. the light of god is filtered through thick irish stout

What if, and hear me out, academics weren’t bullied by their institutions into applying for highly competitive low success rate grants that take months to write and instead did some science?
As we approach Pride Month, I genuinely don't want to see any "we see you" posts from straight folks. That's utterly useless and empty and comes at zero cost to you.
We don't need seen, we need you to muck in, in a serious way.
<gets on rainbow-coloured soapbox> We need more queer spaces that aren’t dance clubs, alcohol-centered, and largely catering to under 30s. (you’re all lovely, but I just don’t have the energy anymore) <grabs railing to step down off soapbox & teeter away>

After 625 days, my treatment for depression (sertraline) has come to an end after 7 months symptom free. That's not to say it won't come back in the future, of course.
I can confidently say that without treatment I'm doubt I'd be here today.

After 17 years being out and 19 years doing field work I realised that I tend to “unrainbow” in the field. It wasn’t a conscious choice (usually) but it’s something I thought I should fix.
Which I have now done 🏳️🌈🥰

As an undergrad, I idolized The University; a place of knowledge, self-discovery, and community.
As a grad student, I learned it was much more about funding, admin, and processes.
As a researcher, I find they are almost universally awful.
Heartbreaking scenes from the US overnight (and not just from last night tbh). Police brutality and racism have no place in the world I want.
Science is political. Science is people. You can’t be for diversity in STEM and not outraged at things right now.
