Feeling unsafe in isolated areas is what keeps many people from birding. That a leader in this community would take advantage of that isolation to commit this act -- to validate the exact fear he worked to dissuade -- is an incredible betrayal. I am sad and angry.

“Then we got telephones and we threw them out like trash. Literally, we threw them away.” LOL no. Ridiculous for a couple reasons, one being that carrier pigeons (a tiny subset of the Rock Pigeons on Earth) had some of their most famous exploits in WWI and II, well after phones.

"We domesticated pigeons. They are (nearly) all over the world because HUMANS BROUGHT THEM THERE.” True! Humans have been eating pigeons for thousands of years, and have been food for cultures all over the world. They likely moved in along the earlier human farms.

Bald Eagles are a threat to loon chicks, but Ospreys are not. I’ve watched all three on the lake this weekend. Loons make a racket when an eagle appears on the horizon but don’t do anything when an Osprey does. Crazy that loons can differentiate the species from so far away.

I use the "Pocket" method to separate Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. See a woodpecker and you're like, "yeah I could probably slip that bad boy into my pocket," that's a Downy. See a woodpecker like "Now that'd be a real challenge to get in my pocket," that's a Hairy.
