My favorite memories from birding often happen when weather is bad&this one of my highlights from earlier this year, Jan 2022. It was snowing&I spotted this beautiful Peregrine Falcon in Central Park. I experienced this moment in total peace alone. It was so very special.❤
@melodyMcooper
I'm a birder too, but also a dog owner. I've seen that woman, and her dog offleash in The Ramble many, many times. I always ask nicely to have owners put their dog on a leash&most ignore me. Sorry, this happened to him. Happy to bird with him anytime.
I read a thread on Twitter abt how googling images of birds facing forward was guaranteed to lift spirits. This is 100% correct! Here is my contribution: Blue Jay, Hooded Merganser in courtship display, Cedar Waxwing&Double Crested Cormorant. Show me your pictures! 😃
Today I dedicate to my posts to my spark bird: Black-crowned Night Heron. 💕 You might get a chance to watch this behavior called "bill vibrating" - they will open&close the bill rapidly in water, which creates a disturbance that lures prey. As you can see, it's successful!
My little blue buddy, my pal/Female Belted Kingfisher, is at Muscota Marsh on Inwood Hill Park now in the rain. Look at her tiny feet, enormous head, and perky butt!!! She's sooooo beautiful!!!😍❤
I'm in The Ramble of Central Park now. While everyone is seeing rarities, this familiar face/park regular is keeping me company on this gray evening: Double Crested Cormorant at The Lake.
Good morning from Central Park!!! Shadbush are heavy w/fruit & they are just starting to ripen. It's a favorite of Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, Gray Catbirds & more. Lenape Indians used this plant for food&medicine&there's even a children's book:
Gloomy today in NYC, so here are some cheery pics from last Spring to brighten your day: Prothonotary Warbler in Central Park. It's a very special memory for me bc I was alone, no other birders around so I got to watch it hunt & sing sweetly within 10 feet of me in total peace.❤
It's chilly&gray here today in NYC, so I decided to not go birding today as the past few days have been just SPECTACULAR with the park filled with birds! I took this photo of this beautiful Magnolia Warbler yesterday. Little guy is here to brighten your day! Happy Saturday!🥰
I'm in Central Park right now, and look who I just said hello to: my first of the season Gorgeous Male Scarlet Tanager!!! Welcome to NYC handsome buddy!!😍❤
A pair of Black-crowned Night Herons are in this beautiful tree with red foliage on the North side of The Pool in Central Park now. 😍❤ This bird has a special place in my heart, they are my spark bird that got me started birding. What's your spark bird?
Gah!!! This is perhaps one of the cutest things I've seen while birding!!! Moments ago this Golden-Crowned Kinglet wrestled with&devoured a huge crane fly, yawned several times&took a nap peacefully sleeping for several minutes right next me!!! 🥰
Good morning from Central Park!!! It's gray&drizzling today, but this GORGEOUS guy just brightened my morning: Scarlet Tanager!!! Potato Birding(sitting very still&quiet like a tater)yields huge rewards! Welcome to NYC my handsome pal&I wish you a safe journey. 💕
Hooded Warbler this am at Bryant Park, in the Pink Begonias directly below the bird bath. What an amazing surprise that totally made my morning!!! Welcome to NYC little buddy!!! 😍❤
Gah!!!! One of favorite warblers is near The Feeders in The Ramble of Central Park right now: Hooded Warbler, aka Ninja Warbler!!! Welcome to NYC my handsome pal!!!😍
I took these Cedar Waxwing photos days ago&I wanted to show you their Waxwing tips on their secondary feathers. The number of red wax tips increases w/age - fewer than 5 red tips is a young bird. This beauty has 8! They nest here in Central Park, so be on the lookout for them!❤
Tip for navigating Central Park: all the lamp posts have 4 numbers: 1st 2 numbers indicating what street it is parallel to, & last two numbers indicate if you are on the East or West side, and how deep in the interior you are. (1 of 2 - see next tweet)
One aspect of photography I don't like is editing. I'm trying to get better at learning as it really is an art form. Here is a Hooded Warbler portrait where I took the time to edit: heavily cropped to highlight the details on the face, background blurred in Lightroom. Handsome!🥰
I conclude today's birding watching this gorgeous Great Blue Heron at Little Hell Gate Marsh at Randall's Island hunt, and fly around. A nice way to end my afternoon!❤
Black- Crowned Night Heron, in Central Park&this is also my spark bird. The first time I saw one it was on no where near water&I watched it eat a rat! I knew so little about birds, I thought it was an escaped zoo animal. 😆 What's your spark bird? What got you started birding?
Good morning! Soooo happy Baltimore Orioles have arrived. I love hearing their calls & what's so wonderful is they nest in Central Park so we get to enjoy them all Spring&Summer. This male is so stunning. 😭❤️
Every season of birding, a bird leaves a special imprint on me. This is from Spring of this year: Worm Eating Warbler. I was never able to get a very good look at one before&it stayed in one tree at eye level for nearly an hour. What's a special bird/memory you have from birding?
Two colorful gentleman: Baltimore Oriole from The Ramble&Wood Duck from Turtle Pond in Central Park from a few days ago. I'm only birding once a week now now that things are quieter, and I'm looking forward for more butterflies to arrive. ❤
Northern Waterthrush and Flaming Indigo Blackbird/Common Grackle at The Pond, and this stunning Female Eastern Towhee and Black&White Warbler at Hallett Nature Sanctuary in Central Park. This concludes today's birding! 😊❤
A very cooperative Black-throated Green Warbler foraging on the ground a lot in the fenced off area just north of the base of Cedar Hill in Central Park moments ago. Nice greeting as I enter the park to go birding!
Gah!!!! I love it when I'm sitting like a potato & I get an unexpected buddy like this Cape May Warbler! Cute toupee ✔️
Fabulous rouge on cheeks ✔️ Fierce eyeliner ✔️
Tiger striping ✔️
Welcome to NYC my beautiful friend!! *this bird is a bit early so he's an overachiever!*
Standing at Gapstow Bridge looking south at The Pond in Central Park, and I watched this Great Blue Heron spear a meal. Good day for this heron, bad day for this fish.
The Goth Prince/Hooded Merganser at Central Park's Reservoir is showing off his glorious sail like crest!!! The crest fully collapses when they dive for food&they have a thin beak w/serrated edges&hook at the end to help them grab fish, amphibians&crustaceans. I adore them!!!😍
As the weather cools in NYC I can't wait for my absolute favorite birds returning: DUCKS! Love them so much!!! I took all these pics in Central Park: Bufflehead, Green-winged Teal, Wood Duck&Northern Shoveler! If you are a new birder in NYC you are in for a treat soon!!! 😃
I found an absurdly cute Pine Warbler in the appropriate habitat just west of The Harlem Meer in Central Park. He's singing too!!! It's an extreme and overwhelming level of cuteness!!😍❤
1)Someone asked me why I bird? I live in NYC, miles of concrete&at night the intense light pollution leaves a largely blank dome instead of stars. Birding in Central Park has allowed me to find that connection to nature&it is really amazing what you can see if think to look. ❤
One of the best things about birding is learning about flora! Cotoneaster is in bloom now in Central Park&these tiny pink flowers are bird magnets! This beautiful Cape May Warbler is feasting(pic 2)&it's an absolute joy to watch these birds low at eye level! 😍❤
This is the most cooperative Belted Kingfisher I've ever encountered at Central Park! I watched her fly in&she stopped for a bit very near me - Yay! Fun bird fact: they are one of the few bird species where the female is more colorful w/a rust belt&the males are just blue&white.
Good morning from Central Park! Say hello to my FOS(first of the season) Zebra Nuthatch....ok, officially known as a Black&White Warbler. Objectively one of the most dapper migrants we are lucky to get in abundance. Welcome to NYC and safe travels to you my little friend! 💕
Good morning from Central Park! These Hooded Mergansers A) Really like my jokes & can't stop laughing, or B)Maybe it's their courtship ritual. Likely B, but A is more fun to think about.
All hail the arrival of the tiny king to NYC: Ruby-crowned Kinglet! Welcome to NYC my little friend & safe travels to you. What a treat to see so many of these little ones today! 😍
Gah!!!! A wonderful start to my day birding in Central Park is having a little ninja/Hooded Warbler pop out on the walking path without even looking for him. Welcome to NYC & safe travels to you little friend! 😍
These are photos from my archive of "common" ducks that you can see in Central Park right now: Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead,Wood Duck&Northern Shoveler. Winter birding w/fewer people in the park is so very calming. Going to see these beauties is guaranteed to lift your spirits.❤
Why I LOVE photography: Cedar Waxwings like to play with their food giving the berries they eat a toss. It happens so fast you really can't see it happening, but photos oftentimes reveal the unexpected&beautiful.❤ It's remarkable how many these little birds can swallow whole!
I'm at Central Park, The Reservoir, NW corner watching a group of 7 Hooded Mergansers sleep(rare I've seen them out of water) feed/hunt, &of course the best part: watching the males with their courtship display to impress the females! Streeeetchy neck is very sexy! 😃❤
My favorite heron: Green Heron in Central Park! It's a bird that can give so many different looks: raising its crest(formal name, I call it a pompadour), streeetching its neck, the way it struts&tucks itself in tight like a tiny football make this a truly fun bird to observe. 🥰
Light rain and absolutely no one is out! So nice! I'm in the Ramble of Central Park, and this Northern Flicker is keeping me company. What's your favorite feature? 1) Polka dot chest? 2) Red Heart on head 3) Handlebar mustache or 4) Yellow-shafted feathers?
Good morning from Central Park! Black Crowned Night Herons will always hold a special place in my heart bc that's my spark bird!🥰 I watched this one swim like a weirdo imitating a duck&catch a fish! I've seen this behavior before, but it's the first time I've photographed it.
Portrait of a Lady: Belted Kingfisher. I'm trying my hand at editing(I still hate it)&removed the branches behind her. What makes a great photo? 1) Knowing the bird is not disturbed by you-it's also how to get the best pics! 2) The memory that photo brings to you-that's it. ❤
Certain things like it being so warm in NYC people are wearing shorts + my first of the season Bufflehead shouldn't go together, but here we are. This is

duck, my most favorite duck. I mean, look at him. Sparkle level of this bird: TEN!!! 😍
Today was a special day birding in The Ramble of Central Park bc so many birds came so close! Pictured here: Swainson's Thrush, Scarlet Tananger, & the best part was a Magnolia Warbler perched on a branch close by and slept for about 10min. Tired cutie pie!!! 😊❤
I haven't been birding lately bc I hate the heat. I think I'm part Eskimo! 😆 Dragonflies have returned to Central Park! There are several species flying about Turtle Pond now, like this Blue Dasher. They eat mosquitoes so I'm their superfan! Welcome to NYC little buddies!!!
Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk having a great day. Pigeon having a very poor day. I saw this just as I walked in Central Park at The East 79th st entrance. It's so cold, I promptly turned around&went back home.😆 Snow is coming! Stay safe everyone! ❤
Good morning!! I'm at The Pond in Central Park, and this Male Northern Cardinal should be nominated for father of the year. He's here with 3 of his babies, and although they are foraging on their own one insists on being fed and he happily obliges. Cutie pies!!!😍❤
Good morning from Central Park!!! Gray day made immensely brighter by this Golden-crowned Kinglet sharing something beautiful with me. Their crown is a bright gold & during very brief moments they'll flash a brilliant fiery orange that is hidden underneath their gold crown. 😍
Gah!!!! I'm in Central Park at Indian Cave in The Ramble and this little n
Ninja/Hooded Warbler is giving unbelievable views right now!!! Central Park birding is so very special!😍
Good morning from Central Park! Tiny bird/Golden-crowned Kinglet + tiny Pine Cones=😍 Cool thing about birding is learning about trees. This is a Hemlock tree&it's a favorite of so many birds like finches&sparrows for the seed in the cones&owls love to roost in them as well.
Probably one of the sweetest sounds you can hear right now in NYC: the song of the White-throated Sparrow! They are here in large numbers now&come this Spring they will depart North to breed. Please take a moment to enjoy them while we have them here. Cutie pies! 😍
Good news to share this gloomy morning in NYC: Cedar Waxwings have returned to Central Park in pretty large numbers now - yay!!! This species nests in the park so we lucky New Yorkers get to enjoy them all Spring&Summer in good numbers. ❤️
Good morning from Central Park! Supposedly, seeing a Northern Cardinal is a sign of a departed loved one visiting you. I normally don't believe things like this at all, but this morning I'll entertain the possibility this is real as I'm missing someone gone.❤
Why I love photography: This American Robin was pulling fruit off the tree&gobbling it down lightning fast. It was only after I got home&studied pics that I could see that the bird consistently picked the darker/more ripe fruit. Love details on behavior photos can reveal!!!😍
I encourage everyone to get out there today bc there are lots of migrants to see like this GORGEOUS Black Throated Blue Warbler! He's so dapper in his Blue Jacket&white handkerchief in his pocket! Welcome to NYC my little blue pal! 😍
Gah!!!
@aba
made a wise choice in making the Belted Kinfisher, my little Blue Buddy, the 2023 Bird of the year! I took this photo in the rain at Inwood Hill Park here in NYC&this is a GORGEOUS female! Isn't she perfect???🥰❤
Did you know Blue Jays have exapandalble throat pouch called a gular pouch that can store up to 5 acorns? I watched his one regurgite this acorn to hide in the ground to eat later. Their hiding of acorns they sometimes forget to retreive have helped the spread of oak trees!😃
Good morning from Central Park and happy Friday! This Mallard duckling has the right idea on how to ease into the weekend with a little yawn&snooze 😴. It's very exhausting being this adorable.
Good morning!!!! I'm at The Lake in Central Park right now and my spirits were just lifted on this gray day by this gorgeous Osprey!!! Look at those talons for grasping fish. 😃
Dating in NYC for a Male Hooded Merganser, involves head-tipping, neck-stretching, body dipping to woo the ladies at The Reservoir in Central Park. Accordion neck is sexy!!😆 Things got a little bit testy as the males competed for female attention. An absolute joy a watch!❤
PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Getting birds in flight pics, like this Red-tailed Hawk, can be challenging! How do you know then they will take off? I've noticed oftentimes a bird will take off in flight after they poop! That's how I knew to be ready for this bird&how I got these pics!😃
Good morning!!! The appropriately named Double-crested Cormorants(aka the Goth Gang) are at The Lake in Central Park.😍 Their turquoise eyes look like sparkling jewels. Fun bird fact: they nest in NYC - look at Mill Rock Island just NE of the Ferry Dock/90th st at the East River.
Fall migration 2021 Birds Facing Forward Volume 1! Did you know that it's scientifically proven looking at pics of birds facing forward lifts spirits? These Fall migrants are here to brighten yr week: Black&White Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Chestnut- sided Warbler&Red-eyed Vireo.
Hello, it's that time of year again when one of my favorite birds return to Central Park: Cedar Waxings!!! They nest in the park&I can't wait for their arrival. I haven't spotted them yet, but if you do alert me immediately!!! This is very important! 😆
As the year comes to end I'm thinking back on some of my favorite moments while birding. This Wilson's Warbler from this Spring was special to me bc I remember how peaceful&empty the park was bc it was raining. What's a special birding memory you have from this year? Talk to me.
Good morning from Central Park!!! Look who said hello to me: Zebra Nuthatch, or officially known as a Black&White Warbler! Welcome to NYC my beautiful friend & safe travels to you! ❤️
Royalty has arrived in Central Park - 2 tiny Kings: Ruby-crowned&Golden-crowned Kinglets. Which King is cuter??? There are only correct answers to this question! Discuss.
#StrategicBirdPhotoReserve
Gah!!!! Is there any better way to start my day in Central Park than with my First of the Season singing Pine Warbler?! He's so dapper. Spring migration = singing birds that makes them easier to find. Thanks, little buddy for brightening my day & I hope he brightens yours! 😍
I'm in Central Park right now, and this is my current view. There is an American Woodcock I'm looking at in this pic. Can you find the bird in this pic? Good luck! 😃
Learning bird song&birding by ear can be challenging. One can listen/ study calls, but there is no better learning experience than seeing the bird sing in front of you, like this Scarlet Tanager did at Inwood Hill Park today for many minutes. It was a very special gift today.❤
Humans of NYC: these are all "common" (I hate referring to these beauties as common)ducks that we get to enjoy all winter in Central Park: Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, Wood Duck&Northern Shoveler. Do you have a favorite? If so, which one??? I'm on team Bufflehead
#thebestduck
!!!
Springtime in NYC at Central Park: the air is cool and fresh, the trees are blooming, and love is in the air between this adorable Northern Cardinal couple! A gorgeous day!!!😍❤
Good morning from Central Park! CUTE COUPLE ALERT: Shadbush right now are heavy w/fruit&Cedar Waxwings are taking full advantage. This couple is engaging in courtship behavior of passing the berry back&forth at least half a dozen times - this pair bonding is so cute I could 😭.
FALL MIGRATION 2022: Huge arrival, 100+, in Central Park today of this bird. I chose a pic of female on purpose, as this is probably one of the most commonly misidentified species. Take a guess on what you think she is!😃
There's a lot going wrong in the world right now. Becoming an informed citizen at the moment is an act of despair. From my archive, Cedar Waxwings bathing in Central Park for a

for anyone that needs it.
I have found the most handsome bird currently in Central Park - Halloween Sparrow, or officially known as male Eastern Towhee. Look at how dapper&utterly perfect he is. If you feel my assessment is wrong, then I will need photographic proof!😆
Good morning from Central Park! My FOS(first of the season) sighting of one of my favorite warblers: Hooded Warbler(aka little ninja). Safe travels to you my handsome little friend. ❤️
Good morning from Central Park! I was sitting like a potato drinking my morning coffee and look who dropped down to say hello: my FOS(first of the season) Chestnut-sided Warbler!!! These guys are one of my favorites. Isn't he dapper???😃❤️
Good morning from Central Park!!! These two dapper gentlemen wish you a happy Thursday! Prairie Warbler and Hooded Warbler(found by Chris Cooper this morning - thank you)! Who is more handsome???🤔
FUN BIRD FACTS: Males have a black handlebar "mustache" on their face(pic 1) & females do not(pic 2). There is so much to love about Northern Flickers: polka dot chest, black bib, red "heart" on the back of their head + the explosion of yellow they reveal in flight. 😍
Good morning!!! Sunrise in Central Park at The Pond with my little pal: the best heron, the Green Heron. What a great way to start my day.😊 The formal name for his "hair" is crest, but I like to call it a pompadour. He's very determined to get breakfast!
Good morningfrom Central Park!!! This Prairie Warbler is looking fierce with his tiger striping pattern on that brilliant golden body. A beautiful male looking so dapper hunting among Autumn berries! Welcome to NYC my tiny tiger pal!🥰
I'm in Central Park&finished exploring the Pine trees NW/NE of the Great Lawn looking for Pine Siskins&struck out - it's very quiet out. This lovely Black&White Warbler kept me company, & I watched it eat several moths. Hungry bird!!!
My favorite part of birding is observing behavior&Springtime means pairing up: Courtship Behavior! Cedar Waxwing courtship involves tenderly giving their mate food. These are young birds as they have no red wax tips on their wings, as the number of wax tips increase with age. ❤
Good morning!!! Let's give a round of applause to one of best migrants to NYC: OVENBIRD! Mohawk ✅️ Confident strut ✅️ Sings one of the most beautiful songs ✅️ Exhibit A that the more spherical/chubby a bird is, the more adorable! Sparkle level: TEN!!!😍
